Itta Bena, Miss. — In a 90-play scrimmage held by the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils football team it was all defense as the offensive unit sputtered at best during the morning workout on the Delta Devils practice field.
Senior defensive end Fred Poole led a defensive unit that recorded eight sacks, two forced fumbles, four recovered fumbles and an interception as the first and second units shined respectively. Poole recorded five sacks and a fumble recovery; while Raymond Berry, Jerry Poindexter and Markkus Davis each recorded a fumble.
Michael Higgins returned a fumble for a 30-yard touchdown and cornerback Gerard Randle returned a Semaj Williams’ interception 20- yards for a score.
Offensively quarterback Ryan Burciega completed 7-of-15 passes for 92 yards, while rushing for 29. Paul Roberts completed 5-of-11 passes for 63 yards with a 25 yard pickup on his only carry. Receivers John Henderson had two receptions for 32 yards, John Stargill two for 31 yards and Abner Brown two for 31 yards.
Tailback Christopher Watkins had six carries for 43 yards; while Dexter Price added three carries for 14 yards. Milton Gaston, Jr. had the only offensive score of the day on a five yard rush off of the left end.
“I’m very proud of the job our defense did today, they were very active and aggressive today and really took it to the offensive unit,â€
said head coach Willie Totten. “Offensively this was probably the poorest performance we have put on all spring. As a unit the offense did not perform to their capabilities.â€
