Itta Bena, Miss. — The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes softball team snapped a 14 game losing streak against the University of Arkansas-Monticello this evening with a, 10-4, victory over the Cotton Blossoms.
UAM drew “first blood†as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Valley responded with one run in the bottom of the inning, three in the fourth and another in the fifth. The Cotton Blossoms drew to within one run at, 5-4, in the top of the sixth but the Devilettes exploded for five runs in their half of the inning to put the game away.
The Devilettes were led by Candy Shumpert’s three-for-three day at the plate, with two runs scored and two RBI’s. Shiana Mitchell, Megan Hayes, Christle Middleton and Traci Roper each had two hits. Nikki
Stouder picked up the win on the mound going the complete game allowing four earned runs.
The Blossoms’ Becca Tipton finished the day three-for-four with a run scored, while Meredith Heckel went two-for-three with a run scored and a RBI. Becca Sustaire suffered the loss as she gave up six earned
runs in five and a third innings of work.
The Devilettes will return to action when they hit the road this weekend traveling to Lafayette, LA to participate in the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Tournament.
