TSPN message board poster Antroy probably said it best, “DING DONG THOMAS IS GONE!†after hearing the news that Alcorn State fired head football coach Johnny Thomas on Monday.
What took them so long?
Thomas had just completed his 10th season with Alcorn State (2-8, 2-7 SWAC) after a 31-19 loss to in state rival Jackson State on Saturday in the annual Capital City Classic.
More from the Clarion-Ledger:
Thomas, a 1977 Alcorn graduate, had a 48-61 in his 10 seasons as coach.
A news release sent by Lijuna Weir, Alcorn’s interim director of university relations, said in part: “The university believes that it is in the best interest of the student-athletes in general and the university as a whole to obtain new leadership for the football program.”
The release also said that university officials met with Thomas and discussed “other non-coaching options that he may consider starting January 2008.”
Thomas could not be reached for comment.
Thomas becomes the third SWAC coach fired in as many weeks following the departure of Steve Wilson and Mo Forte.
