- Deon Sanders is announced as SWAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

All 5 of these stories deserve front page publishing on TSPN, but in the words of ZNSPR8502 "there is something missing"...

A press release.

LOL......SU folks, I will actually take a minute of my time and defend you for the only time this year

1. The SID lost his assistant early last semester and the money allocated for an assistant has dissappeared into the woodworks. The SID is now a one-man staff and he may have some students but you can't relay on students in this profession. You got to have an assistant who is willing to burn some midnight oil if needed. And you have 17 sports.

2. As a result, the hoops media guides aren't done yet and several other sports will probably be pushed back. some coaches get mad if their stuff isn't out like the white schools but it's hell putting a book together of quality and substance with 1 guy who is working football, basketball, v-ball at the same time. white schools have 1 person per sport (fulltime).

3. He could rush some books like other schools but you don't want crap out there on the market.

4. As an SID, your responsible for stats, press releases, game management, media guides and whatever projects arise. Your considered fortunate if you have a full-time asisstant and GAs on the same staff in the SWAC. Unfortunately, only 2 schools have that luxury in the SWAC (GSU, JSU).

5. SIDs are also underpaid in the SWAC and alot of places. I don't know the all the salaries around the SWAC but if one makes over $40K, they earn every minute of it. (Especially if your a 1-man team). 7-days a week on the job and long days.

6. you have to love the job and if you get freetime....believe me that their not thinking about work.

BP,

Good post. I also learned about the assistant situation shortly after the BC from several contacts, but it wasn't my place to bring it up on these boards.

This thread was not intended to be an indictment against the SU SID, but more so as a response to the ridiculous email that I still get from SU posters who use my affiliation with Grambling as an excuse not to publish the information on SU athletics. They fail to realize that it does not benefit me at all to purposely eliminate sports information that covers SU sports...especially when there are so many SU supporters on here. I welcome any information that comes in about SU athletics.

The harsh reality is TSPN (due to lack of resources) relies heavily on the sports information that is submitted by the SWAC SIDs. When you combine this with the fact that the SWAC SIDs (not just SU) lack the proper resources to run an efficient department...not all bases are going to be covered. Sometimes that includes not being able to disseminate sports info to the media.

Not just in the SWAC

To follow up on what has already been stated ...

The lack of resources for sports information directors is not just a SWAC thing. It affects all HBCUs.

Even in the MEAC, N.C. A&T and Norfolk State only have one full-time SID and they have the same number of sports as many SWAC schools.

It gets even worse on the Division II level. Most SIDs are part time at best and have to juggle their sports information duties with other jobs that they are assigned on campus.

As Blu Panther stated, you've got to love the job to stay in the business because pay is not a motivator.

=OW=

Kenn,

That's what I'm talking about. But you forgot one thing. You didn't say, "Giving honor to SU . . ."

And them folk actually email you over that stuff??? Now that's s _ _.:(

We know that they (all swac s.i.d.s)are required to compile the info and send it to the SWAC office and NCAA. That same info., in an email, can be sent to other sources (newspapers, wire services, etc) It's not like you have to sit and call and/or fax each info./news outlet service.

Sounds like an expanded 'Email Distribution List' would solve a good percentage of these problems......

Or a book of stamps.......

Thanks for clearing this up Kenn for the new JAG posters. Any of the old JAG posters already knew this (or should if they don't).

The emails they send to you should be directed to Floyd Kerr, the AD. Maybe if Mr. Kerr got an earful like you do, he would do something about it.

as for Kenn...paying freelance reporters is big drain if your not brinking in top dollars on a consistent basis.. As a student I received $25 per article from a weekly paper a few miles away...

if you wanted fulltime, up-to-the-minute SWAC coverage from this site...Kenn would have to shell out $100 per article plus expenses for traveling, etc.

so lets be thankful (I remember how I was the enemy to Kenn before I changed roles)

now for the schools who have more than 1 SID and failt o put out a lot of info....shame on you.

PS..can I have my screen name back?

About time somebody stood up for the SID, thanks Blu. having worked in the SID office as a student at JSU, I know what goes on. at JSU, we had a full-time SID, assistant SID and student assistants and still were overworked. I interned at the newspaper in Austin, Tex and had the opportunity to attend an event at the University of Texas when Mack Brown was named head coach. man, they have a department to cover men's sports and women's and just within the men's sports info department, they had a SID that covered only football!!! I know our schools don't have the resources that a UT has, but our administrations have to understand that to get good coverage, we need to come off some money to hire adequate and qualified staff.

Hell, at JSU, they have a SID, asst. SID, graduate assistant and several student assistants and they still get harassed by administation and alumni. if they only knew what they had to do!!most people would quit in a hour!!!

I hate when these "contacts" for women's hoops, etc. call us for stuff 3 months before the season start because they have nothing to do but one sport. They get upset when you tell them there are 4 other sports on the priority list.

The football guy at a major school has a lot of BS time on their hand. Look at the media guides...so much BS it is pitiful.

Blu Panther,

Coming of age. I told you back then to slow down my brother. It is nice to see a young man grow in front of your eyes. You can continued to work your plan and allow your plan to work for you. Again, keep-up the good work, your time will come.

I've been on both sides...working in Sports info at an HBCU and at major PWC. And just like the SIDs at HBCUs get grief, the ones at PWCs get just as much grief. Trust me. The women's basketball coach I used to work for at a major PWC used to rip my head off because the local paper only put a teeny, tiny paragraph about the previous night's win even though I used to send hella notes and press releases before and after the game. She thought it was my fault and I wasn't doing my job trying to get coverage. Sorry, but women's basketball was just not a priority to the local paper (or anyone else) but was that MY fault?

Think about this, the bigger your school becomes, the more is expected of you. So, some SIDs may only have one sport at these big schools, but I can promise you they get grief all the time from the big-time football coach who needs the media guide because he has to use it to recruit. Or "so-and-so's media guide was 500 pages, why is our guide only 359?" The pressure is intense and it comes from all over the place. Alumni call and complain because they didn't get their schedule cards or their basketball posters or "so-and-so's basketball posters look better than our posters and their posters came out two weeks ago and ours haven't been printed yet." Sad.

That's why sista girl had to get out of Sports info. Bottom of the totem pole in salary and respect and you definitely don't have a social life.

There may be a few SIDs who are lazy (lazy folks are in every industry) but most are very serious about their jobs and do all they can with the little bit they have. Sometimes it's not always about having an expanded email distribution list. Even if the list was larger, half of those folks on that list won't care enough to report the info or help publicize.

There should be a national "Hug Your SID Day"...

:)

Great thread Kenn. I hadn't even heard about most of that stuff they were honored for and I've been through and through Baton Rouge recently.

If Manns is on here, I would help you in a heartbeat. Brother need a job now .... :redhot:

Hello,

Good news from "The Bluff" has made it! That is all I ask. When it doesn't, I ask to find out if I can do something to address it. To be honest, I'm the same way about HBCUs in general. Kenn will tell you, I use to gather this type of stuff on a weekly basis and e-mail it to a very huge HBCU distribution list all over the country. I use to send selected articles to the media (print and broadcast) in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. Once the SWACPage, Oninadan, Meac Page, etc... started poping up and giving Black College fans central locations to find this information (rather than keeping track of local papers, TV websites, etc...), I started publicizing the sites.

I communicate with our administration to compliment and inquire about improvements. But, at the same time, I try to work with the Kenn's of the world to ensure the best publicity possible for HBCUs is available.

Peace!!!
