Would It Be In SWAC's Best Interest to Send Regular Season Champs to Tourney?

What do you think? What are the pros and cons?

To answer the question, I don't know if there are any "pros".

The one "con" I can think of is the money that would be lost (whatever amount that might be) by not having a postseason tournament. We already talk about the money necessary to do this and to do that, and we already talk about the money we don't have, so why would we want to sacrifice that.

The only reason questions like this are addressed - and I says this respectfully - is because we have become conscientious of how losses like the one TSU suffered tonight looks to others on the outside looking at our conference. The SWAC has played in 6 play-in games since it was created. We've only won ONE.

Quick question ... when was the last time the men's/women's regular season champion went on to win the conference tournament?

Kenn Rashad,

Good Point!

The SWAC has actually played in the opening round game eight times, since the 2001 expansion of the NCAA Tournament starting with the Alcorn State Braves in 2002 and have won only ONE game.

The SWAC is 0 for 4 when the regular season champion has also won the conference tournament and 1 for 4 when the conference tournament champion did not win the regular season. One could further investigate the numbers and view the record when the team is in the top of conference in defensive or offensive scoring or ther variables, but ultimately, it will have similar results. The talent is not at the level of other 16th seed opening round teams.

The SWAC isn't the only conference that does this. Heck Cal Poly was the 7th best team in the Big West but they got hot at the right time (including blowing out the #1 seed UCSB). When you know what you gotta do, it's up to the regular season champs to finish the job. (Go back to two years ago. I was always saying "Finish the job").

Now that everyone (except the Ivy League) has a conference tourney going for the cash grab, that toothpaste is out of the tube now.

This game here we shouldnt have lost at all. That game felt and looked like we got paid off. That team we had that year was beating Siena at every position then we just stop playing. All of us in the pep band was like wtf is going on?!

If we are 1-8 in the play in games, this shows me that their is a systemic problem with SWAC basketball. Until we start winning more OOC games and the play in games consistently will we have a small amount of acceptance in the basketball world.

I think the SWAC would be regarded the same if the league was just average. Not very many mid-major conferences get respect simply because they're mid-majors.
