There was one year our American players lost to Mexico.

I watched my first complete soccer match yesterday. I enjoyed and got into the Ghana/USA matchup.
 
That US/Ghana game was certainly more exciting than the last 3 games of the NBA finals. :smh: :lol: :emlaugh:

Think about it, how many schools have a NCAA-sanctioned men's soccer team? Compare that to how many schools have women's soccer. Also have to factor in that the majority of the US team were playing in their first ever World Cup match.

I agree, but for those of us who watch and understand the game of soccer can debate and critique how a game unfolded. To me it's more than just wins and loses, although at the end of the day that's all that matters. We won a game we should have got blown out in. If we play like that against Portugal and mighty Germany (favorites to win the World Cup), it will get ugly real quick. Hell look at what Germany did to Portugal and Portugal has arguably the best player on the planet in Cristiano Ronaldo.

My assessment of the game is inline with what Howard and Bradley said following the game, scoring that first goal so quickly was bad for the US for it allowed them to get complacent. While Ghana did control the ball most of the game, the shots they blew were just as awful as we played. Ghana is a respectable team but I don't believe they are just flat out better than the US. Look how quickly we woke up after they scored. After spending 80 plus minutes looking like we didn't know how to attack they mounted response within mintues. Yesterday was sloppy and the US will not be able to win Sunday with that kind of play.
 
As I've met people from other countries over the years and observed their passion for the sport that we call soccer and they call football, I've grown to at least appreciate the sport and look forward rooting for the U.S. in the World Cup.

I agree, that because our best athletes do not compete in the sport and it is not even promoted in the way that football or basketball is in this country, we will continue to lag behind other countries. In fact, many of the "football" fans in other countries are much more fanatical than those of us who are fans of the more popular sports in our country. What country was that we played and beat in the world cup tourney back in the 90s and the star player was killed by a disappointed fan? Argentina? Colombia?

anyways...anybody remember the movie Belly? I wonder if Jamaica is good this year? LOL!

It's funny because the USA Women are #1 in the world in soccer. It's simply because on the women's side, Soccer is one of their 3 top sports(Basketball, Softball, and Soccer), and most of the D-I schools field a women's team.

I'm sorry, but most D-1 schools field men soccer teams as well. Believe it or not, but their are more youth soccer leagues and camps than basketball and football combined. In some areas there are three times as many soccer fields then basketball courts. When I lived in N. VA they were just beginning to break ground on a multimillion dollar soccer facility with over ten fields.

I laugh at these misguided comments every time. Americans are passionate about their sports, but we are not fanatic which is a good thing. I'm proud that we don't kill our athletes for mucking up, but we do clown their azzes on social media. So why do you think foreign soccer fans are more passionate again??? Stop believe the hype man. I'm passionate about my son's T-Ball, but you will never see me out their fighting coaches and parents. Does that make me less than a fan or passionate than parents that do fight?

I mean never mind the fact that Jozy Altidore went down in the 17th minute and Dempsey had to play over half the game with a damp broken nose. It's true, our best athletes don't play soccer. Hopefully with the success of Tim Howard, Altidore, and others it will encourage more minorities to play.

Again that is nice and all, but you still aren't getting the top athletes to play soccer. All of them are going to Football, Basketball, and Baseball. That's just how it is. Since the country is so large, you are going to have your pockets of hardcore soccer fans and players, but it just isn't that big of a deal here. Have to give Team USA some time, they have a very inexperienced team(mostly due to the coach leaving out some vets).

But we where playing Ghana.....Not Germany....Not France......Not England...........Not Brazil.......But Mighty Ghana. Countries like Ghana should not even be on the field with us, yet they consistently whip are azz. Ghana has a population of 24 Million people. California alone has over 38 Million. Maybe to you guys, but that shat don't make sense to me.

Misguided? Like others have said, our best athletes play basketball, football and baseball. Soccer is a fringe sport in this country like softball and lacrosse for now. Until we can convince some of these great athletes to stay in the sport instead of switching over to football (Suh was a soccer player until high school. Same with the kid at Ole Liss), it will continue to be that way. Don't let your emotions cloud you from seeing the obvious.

The thing that soccer needs in this country is an athlete with a Tiger Woods like effect on MLS. I don't think Dempsey is that guy as that he is 30 so he only has a few more years of elite play left in him.

I agree that our best athletes don't play Soccer, but also some good one's do play and system at the youth level really needs fixing. We need to do what the foreign countries, be able to identify them at the youth level and not choose kids based on who's parents they know. I know how the system works because my son played at the travel level. You guys be surprised on how many African-Americans are actually playing Soccer when they are young, the question, can you keep them from switching sports?

Misguided being that fans from other countries are more passionate about soccer than Americans are about their favorite sports.
