Who else is watching the World Cup? The U.S. team won by luck on yesterday. Ghana missed about five goals from point blank range with U.S. defenders looking helpless. I felt bad for Tim Howard, the goalkeeper. It was like target practice. Our defense sucked bad, but a win is a win.

Ghana was the better team. they just had an off day yesterday i believe. they control majority of the game. That goal by Clint Dempsey shook them up.

True and it's not even close. How can an inferior country with inferior resources be so much better than a country with unlimited everything. We have world class facilities and they play on sand lots. This is equivalent to SWAC schools beating the shat out of SEC schools in football. Damn that 'the best athletes don't play soccer' excuse. We should beat the shat out of countries like Ghana.

Their best athletes play Soccer. Our best athletes play football, basketball, baseball, and track before soccer. Soccer does not require much equipment. There is a lot of open field in other countries so the need to find space is minimal also. All you need is a ball of some sort and you have soccer practice. The most popular sport in the world but the 4th or 5th most popular (professionally) in the U.S.

Our best athletes don't play soccer. None of our starters could start (with exception of Dempsey maybe) for any other team in our group.

But we're talking about Ghana.......Yeah the Super Power Ghana. Not Germany, France, England, Brazil, but mighty Ghana. Our JV team should beat them. Instead they own us. They dominated us on yesterday. We won by luck and not skill.

See my post.

You're making the same lame excuse that most make. How in the hell does a inferior country like Ghana dominate us in Soccer? Soccer is a popular sport in the United States. Might not be the most popular, but it is popular. Americans play soccer in preschool, middle school, high school, and college. Hell my son is five and his classmates play soccer like their lives depended on it. Yet we get our azz kicked up and down the damn field by mighty Ghana. Not Germany, but Ghana. Not France, but Ghana. Not Brazil, but Ghana. F@cking Ghana. Ghana doesn't have any World Class athletes.

They made it to the quarterfinals in the last world cup. The size of the country means nothing here. How small (and poor) is Cuba yet they are a force in baseball?

Neither does Cuba or Japan, but they kill us in baseball.

That logic is flawed. When has a Cuban or Japan baseball team beat a professional USA baseball team? I would take an all-American MLB all-star team and put them against any country in the world. Who is going to beat them? Also, Japan is a huge azz country with a lot of resources as well.

An ALL American MLB team against the world? You sure our guys would win a series? You ever heard of the World Baseball Classic that uses MLB players? Our team came in 8th place in the last one.

Domination is subjective. A win isn't.

True, but Stevie Wonder could see they dominated us in that game yesterday. Even the commentators could see and said repeatedly we were hanging on for dear life. Ghana missed so many wide open shots in front of the net, but hey we won.

Against individual countries. You're right, in the World Baseball Classic some of MLB players participated. How many were MLB all-star players? I'm talking about their best against ours. Who would win?

Yes man... LOL The whole team was MLB players from the USA. Many were all-stars like Jimmy Rollins, Joe Mauer, Brandon Phillips, Ryan Braun, David Wright, Adam Jones, etc)

So you're agreeing with Ken? Their best would beat our MLB's best in baseball? I'm talking about the MLB's best at every position.

Their best you look a the demographics of the MLB now and there is not as many Americans as before more of youre stars now were not born here and soccer is not that popular here in the united states as there is only two division 1 soccer teams in the state of texas SMU and HBU so if it was that popular wouldnt there be more schools with soccer?

Ken, come on bruh. You are better than this. And baseball is your sport.

Their best vs our best in baseball. Country vs Country. Who would win?

I guess this guy is incorrect.

Without the best players, World Baseball Classic just an exhibition

They held a World Golf Championship event in Miami this weekend. Donald Trump hosted it, at the Trump Doral Trump National Trump Course he recently purchased and plans to redesign by moving some tees back, replacing the sand traps with diamonds and remodeling all the greens so they are shaped like his head.

Anyway, Tiger Woods won this World Golf Championship. But nobody thinks this makes him the world golf champion. A few weeks ago, Matt Kuchar won another World Golf Championship event, the match play. But nobody calls Kuchar the world's match-play golf champion. He is just the golfer who won an event with that name. I assume he makes this distinction at dinner parties.

And this is the problem with the World Baseball Classic. It decides nothing.

I'm sure it's a fun event. I'm sure it means a lot to the players. I believe my colleagues who say the atmosphere is electric. I'll take their word for it, because I'm not watching.

An international event needs to have the best players on every team, or most of them, and it has to matter intensely to those players. Otherwise it's not a championship. It's an exhibition. It's a marketing opportunity.

I have nothing against exhibitions. Or marketing opportunities. If I ran Major League Baseball, I'd stage the World Baseball Classic too, though first I would cut the regular season to 154 games, make both leagues play under one set of rules and do something stupid that I could blame on Bobby Valentine. The World Baseball Classic is a way to "grow the game," so hey, keep growing it.

But this is the USA pitching staff in the World Baseball Classic:

Jeremy Affeldt
Heah Bell
Mitchell Boggs
Steve Cishek
Tim Collins
Ross Detwiler
R.A. Dickey
Gio Gonzalez
Luke Gregorson
David Hernandez
Derek Holland
Craig Kimbrel
Glen Perkins
Vinnie Pestano
Ryan Vogelsong

There are some very good pitchers on that list -- even casual fans know Dickey, Gonzalez and Vogelsong. But there is no Clayton Kershaw, no Justin Verlander, no David Price, no Matt Cain. It is so far from the best American pitching staff you could put together that we don't even need to discuss it further. Anybody can see that, and of course that has an enormous impact on who wins the thing. There is a reason Verlander is gunning for a $200 million contract and Detwiler is not.

Most of those guys with the exception of Kimbrel and Gonzalez are average.
