The Alabama State women's basketball capitalized on a healthy free throw line advantage Friday night to defeat the University of Alabama 72-67 at the Acadome.

The Hornets (3-4) made 32 of 48 free throws.

Alabama, which dropped to 4-4, made 15 of 22 free throw attempts.

"We played well and still could have won tonight's game, but we just couldn't make up for the difference in free throws," said Alabama coach Wendell Hudson. "We went on a stretch in the second half where we didn't make a basket.

"We've got to become a better shooting team overall, and we're working at that every day. A positive for us in this game is that we found out today who could really play considering the crowd we were faced with tonight."

Both team shot well from the field.

Prairie View A&M topples UNO 71-50 in Big Easy Classic
By The Times-Picayune
December 05, 2009, 10:03PM

Midway through the second half Saturday against Prairie View A&M, UNO was still in the game.

The Lady Privateers trailed by seven points, but the two teams were almost even in field goal percentage, rebounding and turnovers.

"And then the separation of a championship team and a team that wants to get a championship stepped in, " UNO Coach Amy Champion said. "A team that's been there and done that. They hit big shots down the stretch."

The Lady Panthers pulled away and defeated UNO 71-50 in the final game of the Big Easy Classic at the Lakefront Arena.

i've been saying the SWAC should be ahead of alot of low major conferences in women's hoops....alot of those schools don't value women's basketball and its easier to recruit a top girl as the recruiting business is not dirty on the girls side....

playing in doubleheaders is better also for us

On the men side they have got to start having a large success against the large conferences becasue it runs the fan base down and/which makes the interconference play more dry. Hey, let's face it, if your team wins against the larger conference they will establish a good chance of winning in the NCAA which is the focus which should be the focuse on every team.....also keep in mind only two teams go the the tournament, one for the men and one for the women :lecture:.
