SE Louisiana hires ex-Kentucky coach Mumme

Hal Mumme left Kentucky under clouds of NCAA violations.

HAMMOND, La. ? Hal Mumme, who coached Kentucky to the postseason before the Wildcats were placed on probation, will oversee the reinstatement of the football program at Southeastern Louisiana.

"He will put a winner on the field," Southeastern president Randy Moffett said Friday. "We do not want to be mediocre at Southeastern University. We want to be excellent. We want to win. And that's why we selected Hal Mumme."

Southeastern has not fielded a football team in nearly two decades.

Mumme built an offensive powerhouse at Kentucky that went to two bowl games during his four years there, including its first New Year's Day bowl in 47 years. But then the NCAA placed Kentucky on probation for three years and stripped the football program of 19 scholarships for more than three dozen recruiting violations committed during Mumme's tenure.

"I went before the committee on infractions and presented my story and they didn't penalize me," Mumme said. "That's all I can really say about it. You just move on from there. You go the next step."

During the 18 months since Mumme resigned from Kentucky, he looked into all sorts of coaching jobs before landing the Southeastern position.

"I talked to some people at various levels," he said. "I don't know if you'd call it making applications but I'm sure I talked to everyone from the NFL down to Division II. We considered lots of options, but very few of them really caught my imagination."

Southeastern athletic director Frank Pergolizzi said he had no qualms about hiring the 50-year-old Mumme. Although there are no special rules or regulations governing the coach, the program will be closely monitored.

"Coach Mumme and I have already talked about our desire to set up a compliance system that is thorough and complete and has multiple levels of checks and balances," Pergolizzi said. "We know there is going to be more scrutiny on him, so I think it's in all our interests to have as much control as we can."

Mumme has a 5 1/2-year contract that will run through the 2007 season. His base salary is $75,000 a year, with incentive clauses including one that would give Mumme 10% of ticket revenue each season once the school has earned $100,000.

Before the announcement, state Sen. John Hainkel of New Orleans said he felt the state could not afford to associate itself with a candidate who had been brushed by scandal.

"I am perhaps extraordinarily sensitive to the message that Louisiana sends out," said Hainkel, who has helped secure millions of dollars in state funds for Southeastern. "Deserved or not, we've had a bad reputation for political corruption and ill dealings and so forth. ... Simply given the time and place, I don't think we ought to take a chance."

Mumme said he realized that people were emotional about football.

"All I can say is I hope he gets to know me and changes his mind," Mumme said of Hainkel.

Southeastern Louisiana, which dropped football in the mid 1980s for financial reasons, begins playing again as a Division I-AA independent in 2003. After two seasons as an independent, SLU's football team will join the Southland Conference, in which it competes in other sports.

Small college football is nothing new for Mumme, who spent three seasons at Iowa Wesleyan and five seasons at Valdosta (Ga.) State. He went 25-10 at Iowa Wesleyan, an NAIA school, and 40-17-1 at Valdosta State, a Division II school.

If that's all Southeastern is gonna pay Coach Momme, I expect TSU not only to play them, but to beat them too. Coach Thomas make approximately $80,000.00 a year.

SU, I wonder how this is gonna effect your football program? I know Southeaster is right down the street, but Southern has rich football tradition since the 80's. I can't see SU losing to many recruits to SLU. Unless that cold ice theory come into play (the white man's ice is colder than the black man's ice, so we run to the white man).

At Any Cost

I lived in Hammond La. Southeastern had to hire a name to get its program off the ground
quickly because they have to win NOW! and fill seats NOW becaus this is a big risk for the university i use to work
they were the fasts growing school in the country the past 4 years but a few supports demanded football be brought
back, but the majority did not want football but 8 boosters raised 5 million dollars to bring it back they claim it only
took 18 months but those in the know will say off the record it took almost 10 years. As far as recruiting this one of the most talent rich areas in the country I used to do Hammond high football on the radio and every major coach in
the country came through Fulmer, Spurrier, Holts on a regular basis but it's a rural area with alot of non-educated or
under-educated black so that tends to foster an attittude the white mans ice is colder plus the have probelms with standardize test so a lot of kids are piped to Southwest Mississippi Community College by the pwcs

That spells trouble for GSU and SU in terms of recruiting. You know a lot of kids who are great skill players will join on because he has the name and offense. PLus, they will be d-1 in a few years so that will be a force to reckon with in recruiting battles.

Well acutally they aren't planning on going to D-1 status and the salary is a good salary to start with no program. At Mumme's press conference he mentioned the program has,"...one football, one whistle and a head coach...", so he knows he has a lot of building to do. This might affect our recruiting, but it won't hinder it. However, it's now putting us closer to refining ways to improve our facilities I'm sure.

TSF:
His salary may seem low but that ticket revenue incentive is the bomb. Many SWAC coaches would love this.

Just think... If Southeastern can sell only 10K tickets in each of its 4 home games @ $12/ticket, the coach walks away with an extra $40,000.

"Deserved or not, we've had a bad reputation for political corruption and ill dealings and so forth. ... Simply given the time and place, I don't think we ought to take a chance."

I am sure that some writers across the south are taking their shots.

This is really going to affect recruiting in that area....especially for skilled players.

I agree. It may not happen now, but watch out soon.

First of all SLU is barely 1AA not to mention 1A this area is an area of skill players mostly SLU's stadium only hold
hold 7500, 10,000 with temporary bleachers plus they belong to a dying conference the Southland with only five football schools because J'ville state has left for the Southern conf. S'west Texas is going 1A in two years because they can play a almost all Texas sch. Southeastern' s doe is not that deep from what I've been told they hope to fattin thier against SWAC schools they want to play ALCORN and Valley they say they not ready for the top SWAC schools I
talked to Frank Peragolizzi the AD about joining the SWAC but with no commish nobody from the SWAC could speak for the conference. they joined the Southland reluctantly because they need crowds NOW. They plan on recruiting alot in N.O. because alot of kids in the area cannot get elgible no grades no SAT or ACT they also will look to the JC's so we shall see

Jagster what's up (THEM DAMN Nurses)

Dude,

Hal Mummy can coach and recruit. he is about ot rape that area of recruits. I just want you to know that.

No doubt Hal Mumme can coach but this is a special situition a new program with
LSU , Southern and Tulane taking precaution against them plus believe me the eye
of the NCAA will be on him. LSU just hired Charlie Bagalio the retired coach of Indepence
High who has sent many players to LSU including Toefield the running back Indepenence
is 4 miles from Hammond. Grambling has stronghold on Hammond because of Al Dennis
Southern's strong hold is the northern part of the parish Amite, Kentwood,

Bigtyme69,

I agree that the Southland Confernece is a fledging league in terms of their football membership, but...

S'west Texas is going 1A in two years because they can play a almost all Texas sch.

... Southwest Texas State University has recinded their petition to the NCAA to move from NCAA Division I AA status to NCAA Division I A status.

Kentwood, East Ascension, Independence, Hammond High, and Ponchatoula are all great high school programs in that Parish and surrounding areas.

Hal's presence will make Pete have to come up with some new ways to recruit. Just by him coming from d-1 will make potential kids enter starry eyed.

CONGRATS TO THE PROGRAM. IT MAY/WILL GIVE MORE STUDENTS A CHANCE TO PLAY. SELLING POINTS OF THE SCHOOL AND THE PROGRAM WILL BECOME THAT MUCH MORE IMPORTANT.

Well, if you wanna know...

I live right here in St. Tammany parish and have a few connections also in Washington Parish and I am here to tell you that those kids who end up going to SLU were not headed to SU or GSU anyway. Let's face it, those kids who wanna play right away and stay close to home were playing at Nichols State and those who had any other appreciable talent went to McNeese St. (as far as playing Div. 1AA).

St. Tammany, Washington and Tangipahoa parishes have many SU supporters and alum's who have just started making in-roads with these kids. So, again, I'm telling you that if they go to SLU, they weren't headed to our schools anyway! Besides, SLU has been primarily recruited out of New Orleans and South Louisiana (around the Houma-Thibodeaux, South Lafourche areas). With Mumme in control, I still can see these kids going there, but he'll have some "other" connections, also.

I, for one, think most of the kids will take a wait and see type of attitude and opt out of playing for a school that doesn't provide not only a major that they are interested in, but no immediate pipeline to the next level.

Only time will tell!!!

Also don't forget about transfers. When Mumme was down at Valdosta State, he used a lot of transfers. He was D2 so the UGA kids who had sat the bench for a couple of years or those who had redshirted and knew they weren't going to play, went to Valdosta. I expect that to happen here also. He will be picking up the castoffs and they may come because of his exciting offense  and the notoriety that he has. Time will tell.

This is an excellent point. Valdosta State had made a name for itself with former Georgia Bulldog Mike Cavan. Mumme did a lot of innovative things that attracted some recruits. Of course it helped that south Georgia has a lot of talent.
