Heated exchange mars end of Amanda Anisimova’s epic Wimbledon upset over Aryna Sabalenka

The final stretch of Amanda Anisimova’s upset of top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the Wimbledon semifinals came with a touch of drama.

After Anisimova closed out a game for a 5-2 lead in the third set with a forehand that clipped the top of the net and went over, Sabalenka seemingly questioned her opponent.

“Why didn’t you say sorry?” Sabalenka appeared to ask Anisimova after the two crossed paths on the changeover.

Players will frequently — though not always — put their hand up and apologize to their opponent if they get lucky and a shot bounces over the net after hitting it.

However, it is rare that it becomes an issue between two opponents.

Sabalenka took next two games to put pressure on the American, but Anisimova broke Sabalenka once more to close out the 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

This is the one thing about tennis I have never understood. Why should you have to say you are sorry on something that is just part of the game? I understand that when the ball hits the net and still goes over, the opposing player usually does not have time to play the ball. Not too much different from a drop shot.

First Wimbledon title for Swiatek

Iga Swiatek, Wimbledon champion – will those words ever seem less astonishing? For all her achievements, until this summer the Pole and lawn tennis have combined much like her favourite recipe of pasta and strawberries – a puzzling concept.

Yet magnificently, here she is. Incongruous ingredients can combine to unexpectedly spectacular effect, it turns out.

Amanda Anisimova’s performance in her debut Grand Slam final was unhappily shredded by nerves.

But Swiatek’s merciless 6-0, 6-0 victory – the first such final scoreline here in 114 years – marked the soaring reappearance of peak Swiatek… on, of all surfaces, grass.

The rivalry is on! I dont see anyone getting past the top two anytime soon, as long as they are healthy. It will be interesting to see who can do what Rafa and his team did, figure out how to beat the top two.

Jannik Sinner Beats Carlos Alcaraz to Win 2025 Wimbledon Men's Final Bracket

The No. 1 seed defeated Carlos Alcaraz, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the 2025 Wimbledon men's singles final on Sunday to win the prestigious event.
