Will This Work

Yes I am at it again with my redundant topics so here goes.I really think that we the fans should petition the SWAC and MEAC to reinstate the HB.I believe that it would succeed or do better if it is marketed properly. With all of our and alumni there is no reason that it can't work. Before some of you come down on me too hard remember the more exposure the better. We know that we will have at least 1 team from each conference that will have 8 wins or more so it won't be a case of 2 mediocre teams playing just to play but 2 solid teams that could position themselves for a better spot in the rankings for the next season as well as gaining national exposure for our respective conferences. Each school sould be reponsible for selling 1,000 tickets each through alumni and booster clubs(this was reccomended by another poster last year)which would be about a 40k investment and that would give us at least 38k sold. With the number increasind once the participants are decided that would take it to over 50k easily.Someone has to step up with some vision and professionalism to show these corporate sponsors that taking our economic power lightly could be a costly mistake.Just because other 1aa teams who miss the playoffs stay home does not mean we should also.I also believe that we should look at cities other than Atlanta ie B'ham,Charlotte,NO,Miami,etc...Someone please show these people that the BC brought in $16,000,000 to New Orleans and the FC brought over 10,000,000 to Orlando. We need not give up hope.

I think most fans (including myself) agree the Heritage Bowl needs to be reinstated. Frankly, the SCG is a waste of time without a bowl for the champion to go to.

The question is who would the SWAC opponent be. We know the SWAC champion is always going to be a Top 25 team. IMO for the game to be successful we need to pair the SWAC champion against another Top 25 team whether it's MEAC, Southland, etc. This should be possible since only 16 teams go to the playoffs.

Mobile, N.O are two cities that come to mind for the game.

The Bayou Classic has close to $50 million impact on the Crescent City's economy. The BC ranks with the Sugar Bowl. Remember there are 40K fans at the Battle of the Bands alone.

The Heritage Bowl needs to be revived, I agree (I was the poster who suggested the allotment to all conference member schools in addition to the gate). It can be a financial boon to both conferences.

However, the SWAC champion playing the MEAC's 2nd or 3rd play team just isn't working. The appeal is not there and the SWAC only loses with this setup. It has no high stakes drama like the best of each conference playing for all the marbles.

Now if the conferences got behind the allotment idea and pushed it hard to their alumni it could still work. The approach would have to be one that extols the financial benefits for each school of the alumni supporting the game and the benefits of giving their athletes a post season bowl experience. A "Pull on the heartstrings and loyalty to the old alma mater" type of thing.

But trying to sell the game as a national championship between the two best teams in black college football won't work because that is not the case. Sell it to the alumni as a fund-raiser for the schools and go from there. Maybe make the HB ticket a part of each schools season ticket package.

Regards.

I thought that was the actual figure but I wasn't sure.As far as the the SWAC playing the 2nd or 3rd team in the MEAC I think that both conferences should have a mini BCS with the top 2 teams not going to the playoffs playing for the right to play in the bowl.To have the SCG with no place to go ie bowl or playoffs is a rather baffling decision on the SWAC's part.If we put our best in the playoffs and win it will give us more national credibility. If SU is 8-3 along with JSU or ASU and just miss the playoffs and play a BCC or A&T or even HIU in the same situation it will have fan interest. When SU played HIU in 99 the fact that they played in a lopsided game earlier in the season hurt fan interest regardless if they were the MEAC champs or not.

This illustrates the dilemma and why the Heritage Bowl will be hard to revive. The two conferences have very different philosophies and approaches on how to acheive its goals. The SWAC chooses to handle the national creditablity issue by scheduling stronger non-conference regular season opponents. It also sees a more advantagous financial position in the conference championship game setup as opposed to the I-AA playoffs. The MEAC's position is its more advantageous from the national creditability standpoint, and I'm assuming financial as well, to play the playoffs. Each has to do what is in the best interest of their respective conferences. Given the differences, right now the philosophies seem to be an ill-fit to make playing the HB a benefit for all.
