Why Not Move Down

I posted this on the MEAC Fan Page earlier and wanted to read the opinions my SWAC brethren on this matter.

Why is it such a bad thing for some of the schools in the MEAC and SWAC to consider dropping down to DII.Like Doomsday said in another post we could maintain our current commitment and win some championships. This will be for the good of BCF in my opinion and our other sports as well.It will also have a positive effect on attendance because we will be more competitive.

I don't think all schools need to do this just half. You could have FAMU,BCU,SCSU,A&T, and HIU from the MEAC then JSU,SU,GSU,AA&MU from the SWAC.We could also add TSU giving us a 10 team 1aa conference split into regions with 5 in each region to keep travel costs down. The remaining schools can drop to the CIAA and SIAC.

I know that this is not a very popular idea but I really don't see the need to go on with this charade just for the sake of saying we are D1.Imagine how big our basketball tourney would be knowing that we could get 2 or 3 bids with 4 or 5 20 plus win teams.

We would not lose a thing as far as attendance is concerned and we could still have our classics. We could also generate more revenue to improve our facilities and hire better coaches thus making us that much more competitive.

Our D1 teams would get better because they would be playing a good team week after week and the attendance will be good because of the solid match ups. Each team could schedule 7 conference games and 4 non conference games with other 1aa or small 1A schools in their region. We could probably get a decent TV deal with ESPN 2 or ESPNU for both levels. How much bigger would the CIAA basketball tourney be with the return of HU,MSU,NSU,etc...Imagine the excitement of an HBCU winning a football and basketball championship in the same year?

I know it will probably never happen but I really think Doomsday was on to something and that our schools and AD's should take a serious look at this.Only time will tell where we go form here but whatever happens I hope it is a move to improve HBCU athletics.I guess time will only tell.

If you want to create another 1-aa HBCU conference and put those teams in it, do it. But, don't disrespect the other schools, some of whom actually paved the way and have been members of the SWAC and MEAC since the conferences were created, by making them drop down to division II. What benefit is being division II going to have?

Geographically, it's going to create some travel nightmares (at least it will for the schools in the SWAC), it's going to cut our operating budgets, make us less attractive to other teams when it's scheduling time, and it's going to create an even bigger problem with our own HBCU's that made up this "new" conference.

Not to mention that some of the teams that you have listed as being a part of this conference either: 1) haven't been that good themselves recently to warrant them being chosen to remain in 1-aa, or 2) would jump at a chance to move up to 1-A if the opportunity presents itself the right way.

I am not making anyone do anything just offering a potential solution to an obvious problem. The question is what would it hurt for some of us to drop down to DII?What would we lose?

Actually the SWAC doesn't have the problems that the MEAC has. For all the complaints we give ourselves and all the criticism we get from the Meac poster and every other PWC school one thing our conference has done right and that was to recognize that travel would be an issue of the future for schools.

The Meac with it's not wanting to affiliate itself with the other HBCU conference mentality cause there own problem.

Hell you still have Meac schools who don't want to participate in the MEAC/SWAC challenge and I guarantee you as soon as the SWAC takes the lead in that (and we will) the MEAC will turn and run just as they did with the Heritage Bowl.

This is not a MEAC vs SWAC issue because both have been taken to the woodshed when facing decent non conference competition. Why not go to DII and wreck shop.Once again I do not think every school needs to step down., just the less than competitive schools and I am not ashamed to admit that HU is one of those schools.

Actually the MEAC has far more then the SWAC and the SWAC is about ...what? A half a century older?

But my point is, if you can't get the MEAC schools to be cooperative and have a sense of kinship (unless they're winning) for one game how do you figure to get them to join SWAC schools in a conference? Not to mention that little thing y'all love call the payoffs games.

The only school I can see in the SWAC that would be a candidate to move down is Valley. This is a moot topic.

Our traditional weaker programs or as follows:

1) PV.....Won men's commissioner cup last year and had a stellar football season; a new baseball power
2) Texas Southern-Replacing their football coach has 12,000 students in large metro area; emerging baseball program
3) Pine Bluff-Last years Western Divison Champions
4) Alcorn-Won 4 out of last 5 CCC and just let their coach go.

Top half
1) S.U.---enough said
2) Grambling--enough said
3) Jackson State--enough said
4) AAMU-Defending SWAC Champs
5) Bama St. 2003 runner ups; 2004 SWAC Champs

As you can see 9 out of 10 SWAC schools are not going anywhere.....

I would be opposed to any of the SWAC schools dropping down to Div-II, especially Texas Southern and PV.

See like most MEAC poster they run when confronted with a different opinion that doesn't support their views

Hmmm wonder who that reminds me of.

Ralph send help

eventually...someone will have to breakthough and take charge as our budgets are stagnated due to hovering enrollment numbers and lack of financial commitment from outside sources...

Just imagine if JSU, GSU and SU added an extra 5 to 7 million for athletics...then a real gap would emerge

Additions to Alcorn.
