Why Does ESPN Do This

Well it was mentioned on facebook that the students who are trying to "take back txsu" are now boycotting the games. I'm not sure what kind of sense that makes but it certainly doesn't help that TSU's own students aren't going to the games now.

I remember reading that. Who are they suppose to be taking it back from?

Your time? On youtube? Interesting. We have a mentor program for band students of which I'm a part of. Haven't seen you there giving time. Been on campus and even worked there and helped students get in school, helped students find their way through understanding loans etc...just on my feet like countless other TSU alum. Didn't see any blue and gold there. Didn't expect it either...because it doesn't exist. Don't get me wrong...this isn't against YOUR school but I just don't see how suggesting other schools shouldn't get any shine of their own makes a good foundation for all this altruistic thinking round these parts...
Ok great thats good u do good deeds at txsu. But we talking about txsu vs bama st on espn on thursday smh. What shine would especially txsu football get on espn on saturday or thursday? Please answer that question?

Would the schools for either of the games you mentioned be willing to play on a Thursday night? Most of our fans save up and travel for weekend games. Most of our constant attended games are not willing to change dates. It may have been a good crowd but I seriously doubt there would've been 25K at the JSU-SU game a few weeks ago if the game were on a Thursday night.

If you go back and look at the games played on Thursday's, most were typically low attended games even if they were played on Saturday. Now, does the schools receive compensation from being on tv? If so, I'm sure the compensation would equal or be greater than had last night's game been on Saturday.
U can't say that because JSU hosted TxSU in I think 2011 On a Thursday night and the attendnCe was 26,000 I do believe . So it's all on how the hosting school markets the game !!! So yes I'm sure atleast 25,000 would attend a Thursday night game vs JSU n SU in Baton Rouge .

Why would ESPN try to hinder showing games that more people would watch when umm... ya know... they get money based off of ratings? lol
Good point but trust me racist shit still rules this country. They'll take a hit in the pocket versus showing something positive pertaining an HBCU. I see you must be one of the many blacks that think racism is non existent lol

Take it back !!!! Who has it now ???

I think you're wearing the tin foil cap on this one Jimmy. At the end of the day you put a better product on the field market/promote the game better and stop being stuck on stupid by getting out of your small box and being creative to get fans in the stands

Yea I would never schedule SU for HC if I were TSU or PV AD. Doesn't make sense because SU is going to show up in Houston to see their team play. I have no ties to TSU or PV but for some reason I don't mind shelling out 20 bucks to see SWAC football. That's how I was raised, my family went to JSU games every home game. It was fun and exciting as a kid. Some things you can't grow out of I guess. We even made a few Alcorn and Valley games back in the day just to see some SWAC football. Now that I'm living in Houston I can understand why attendance is the way it is. They have way more options to do things here and the passion for black college football is not a top priority for Houstonians.

Of course they are playing us. Which to me I think is a waste because they could have use that game to schedule a D2 and then have at least two good crowds this year.

The reason JSU had a good crowd was due to marketing. For that game, JSU made all tickets $5. Do you honestly think either school would change their prices to $5.

I don't understand why others haven't use similar marketing tactics after seeing how successful it was for JSU. No other schools can't put 26,000 ibut I'd rather get 5K-10K inside of the stadium and hope they spend once in rather than charge $15-$20 on a Thursday and keep potential customers away. Remember I posted about what New Mexico was doing to get people inside of the stadium with Dominos (buy a pizza, buy a season ticket package for $125 for a family of 4)

Winning cures all ills. With all there is to do in Houston, if TSU had a recent history of winning (last 3-4 yrs), they would have had a decent crowd. The alums are going to come, but the avg fan wants to see a winner. Plain and simple.

But SU didn't show up @ PVAMU on campus the year prior lol & neither does JSU. The show up traveling mess is a lie so squash that one. Also, some are intimating that sTu outpriced itself offering 10$ genrl admission tix & freebies galore to other numerous groups? lol I paid 10$ last night to attend a HS football game lol.

That logic makes no sense though...they just created an HBCU bowl game...that's going to be on prime time tv. I'm sorry but that line of thinking is retarded. ESPN doesn't give a chit whether you're an HBCU or a PWC...they care about who is going to get the most ratings. On top of that, people are comparing a tv slot on a Thursday night when hardly anyone is playing to a Saturday game when there are HUNDREDS of games on. I mean come on, this is simple business logic.

To be honest, I'm glad they are showing the SWAC games on Thursdays. Hell, you never know who could be watching. Might inspire kids who have never heard of some of the SWAC schools to give them a try. It's all free advertising for whomever is playing that night.

That's all that us 'natives' have been saying all along. Unless you live here or frequent here, that argument won't make sense to you.

In theory, yes. When the deal started, this may have been true. But now, there is another college game on that is usually a much higher profile matchup. And there is also WEEKLY Thursday night NFL that you didn't have to contend with before last season. So that argument doesn't hold quite the weight it did a few years back.

I think the schools have much more influence on the Thursday night slate than the network.

Isn't there a clause in the contract that each school has to play on a thursday so many times during the contract.

We've been saying that for years but everyone who doesn't live here or been here regularly would always quote Houston as the 4th largest city in the country.

Glad to hear someone that is one of the transplants here to the area say it too.

As someone who is in Year 3 here in Houston, I fully agree. There is so much to do here. Plus Houston is very diverse ethnically and socioeconomically. The strategy here to draw new eyeballs is a lot different than it is back home in Baton Rouge or even in Atlanta.

i can write a case study on tsu attendance as I have been going to tsu events since I was 3 or 4 but I'm not going to write one though right now

simply enough...as I even see it with the astros.....downtown sporting events is overrated as it sounds good in theory or in cities that are smaller where the suburbs are closer

TRAFFIC

Houston suburbs are spread out and TSU fans most likely live in Pearland, SW Houston (Mo. City), far Northside, etc.....they're not coming back during the week to BBVA.....if the game was played in a suburb it may have drawn better on a weeknight...

PVAMU has the same issue at times for weeknight events in terms of drawing fans from Houston...traffic...you better get the students involved

Don't say that too loud GoodFella, you'll be banned from the board from those who don't buy into that!

We have an under performing team that high expectations were set and not achieved. What momentum gained during the 2010 season is all but a long gone memory.

as funny as it sounds...Johnnie Cole's issues hurt TSU as he kept them relevant to the common fan.... he had folks watching to see what was going to happen....
