Why Birmingham?

WE are stuck in Birmingham because it was free. But free ain't always better. Sometimes you get what you pay for, and thier is a reason something is free. No one will pay to play in Legion Field or to come to Birmingham, that why they kissed our arse to get us to come.

New Orleans wasn't tryin to hear all that poor mouthin, because they know what they are worth (or at least thing they do). I think that at worst case, move the game to Jackson. More folks would even come to Jackson, but idealy, New ORleans or HOuston. But we won't get New Orleans for free, and New Orleans ain't gonna kiss our behinds to come. That would be an investment.

I know Jackson tried to get the game. I'm not sure what happen. The SWAC office couldn't come to an agreement ... *shrug*.
I say Jackson...not because i'm from Jackson, but because it is a central location in the swac really.

To show how much Birmingham was committed to the SWAC, they MOVED the state football championship games scheduled for Saturday to the Hoover Met... a 13,000 seat stadium.

Sperm why do you need 14 days to plan... you have a whole year to plan... seems like you are plannin off of who is playing in the championship game. Like I said earlier.... DONT GO ..... DONT COMPLAIN.

You are still a college kid without responsibilities. If you knew anything about traveling other than you and your boys packing up 8 deep in 1998 Honda Accord, you would understand what I'm saying. There are fans that do not live in SWAC cities. If the game was in my back yard, yeah I would go even if my team wasn't in it. However, with the game being about a 11 hour drive from me, I chose to FLY. In order the get a flight at a descent rate, you need to make your purchase 14 days in advance. If I'm going to purchase a flight, rent a hotel, rent a car, I'm not going unless my team is playing. I'm no different than majority of the fans that do not live in Alabama whose team is not in the SCG.

With the West champion not decided until the final 6 seconds of the ASU/UAPB game, I'm sure majority of the SU fans that went were DRIVING fans. It was too late to get a descent fare on ANY airline from any city to Birmingham within 6 days.

what contract? lol

The Executive Offices contract. Is that not where the SWAC HQ was located before it moved? If they kicked us out on our @sses (with no effort to try to re-negotiate anything after the contract expired,) do you really think they had any desire to host a championship game there?

AAMU Alum I think you hit it on the nose. Due to the questionable weather the game & fans have had to endure it would be great if it could be played in an indoor facility.

Last year was the only time the scg was played in inclimate weather. People aren't just attending the game for whatever reason. Does Birmingham sound appealing as far as the scg is concerned? Depends on who you ask. Either way it goes, no one was there last Saturday and the weather had NOTHING to do with it. It just perceived to be the last game of the season if that much.

Southern, (and most of the SWAC, IMHO) are a driving school, not many fly to games, and if you plan something depending on folks to fly in, iyou won't get that 30K crowd. Birmingham is a good drive away from all of the SWAC WEST, and really the only close school are the 2 Bamma school, and they won't even come out consistently to thier own home games.

If it is all that it should be Ala State should have brought 25K fans themselves. But in reality, they only have a few more than Southern. I know My bus left BR at 4 am in the morning. Birmingham just ain't attractive enough to get folks to make that kinda sacrifice. It even crossed my mind to just rotate it from the East winner then the west winner. And let a school host it, and just pray that Valley never wins the east.

Lewie,

What's going to be the difference if the game is played in Texas, or LA? I realize that your dislike for Alabama drives your opinion, but do try to be objective. I don't think you'll find anyone from AAMU or Alabama State that will complain and whiiiiiiiiiiiine like many of you have if the game moves. Even if it moves to Jackson, that's five hours from Hsv and at least that much or more from Montgomery. I would really like to see just how many of the folks doing all the bi-yatchin' on this forum about this d@mned game (which comes up every year, as if folks didn't know the game would be in B'ham) would travel to another city if it moves.

I guess if it's not in your backyard, it ain't worth coming to. If that's the case...STAY AT HOME rather than cry about it every year. The constant complaining about this issue from all these folks really grates on one's nerves.

How many ASU or AAMU fans would make the drive to Houston, Shreveport, Dallas, Little Rock, or New Orleans if the SCG was there?

Sperm,

I know that you can read better than that, because your an Alpha Man. See what I posted to Lewis below:

On another thread, I posted practially the same response, and added Jackson, Shreveport and Little Rock.

I can guarantee you ONE thing for sure: If the game were moved to any of those other cities, you wouldn't hear the excruciatingly annoying whiiiiiiiines, and shrill cries of Alabama folks like we've heard from others. One thing you can count on this time of year....the temperature drops, folks spend alot of money, and SWACpagers whiiiiiiiine about that d@mned SCG!!

The bottomline is ...people just don't like Birmingham. And as far as I'm concerned, Jackson, MS is no better off than Birmingham. Nothing about these cities will get the average interested. Then add in the fact that alot of BCF fans are not as interested in being in cold, rainy weather and you have the current situation. Houston and New Orleans are both cities that black people love to go to. Both cities also have a higher concentration of SWAC alumni. Both also have domed stadiums. I understand the logic in staying somewhere thats free but if Houston or New Orleans make a comparable offer then the SCG will be better off leaving Birmingham.

First of all, this is the sports board not the smack board, so you don't need to call me out my name. Second, I am being objective, and it has nothing to do with my personal "dislike" for Alabama. But since you put it like that, if it gotta be in someone's backyard, why not in SU, JSU, Alcorn, and GRAMBling backyard, instead of out thier with your "Self Admitted" sometimey fans. One of the Bamma school been in the game every year but the first, but which game had the highest attendance????? (Don't tell me about them bands either) Look at attendance numbers for the regular season?? Do you see a pattern here. You see these schools been here making the SWAC what it is long before AAMU came asking to get in. We led 1AA in attendance before AAMU showed up. I am just being real when I say a lot of the fans that have been supporting the SWAC for years and years ain't tryin to hear driving way out to Birmingham, to see a game, esp against one of the BAMA schools.

If that game was played in S0uthern's "Backyard" there would have been 30K there without niether one of you bama schools bringing a soul.

Well, they make that typo a lot them, maybe they just can't type, but it's the only "typo" I saw in the entire post.

Houston needs to be the next spot. Each West SWAC school has a large concentration of alumni within a 3 hour drive of Houston, and some SWAC East schools for that matter. Each team if far enough that fans will book hotels instead of driving up and leaving, therefore the city will make some money. (Speaking of which, the SWAC says the SCG had about an $6 to $8 million dollar impact on the city of Birmingham this weekend. Is that true?) If the SWAC can prove what the impact of having the game will be on the city, then I'm sure they will get a sweet deal on stadium rental, hotels, etc.

Don't forget, Dallas area will soon have a new dome.

For what its worth, Houston is also the only SWAC city with an alumni chapter from each of the 10 schools.

Now that wasn't fair, I'm sure UAPB has an Alumni Chapter in Norman, MS and Itta Bena, MS.

EXACTLY!!!

I have BEEN trying to tell folks that no one is going to want to drive to Birmingham to play against a Bama school. No smack but just being real. Bama fans don't travel well until their lil Classic, their bands are garbage, and there's no real hype about them. There probably is more to do in Birmingham but I say bring the game to Jackson. Its the central point of the SWAC (within 5 hours of each school) and JSU fans/locals will come out and support. Another GOOD option would be Memphis.

...Carry On..
