What's with the growing moves to ban christmas/christmas symbols? For the life of me I just don't see why people are expending energy on this. Who or what does Christmas hurt and how?? How much more of this can/will christians take? Prayer Board please send help.

I don't know how much this is growing. It has been going on for years. The most common areas that we see are in the use of public funds for displays, shows, decorations, parades, etc., and with the political correctness of "winter holidays".

Since I had the opportunity to explain concert etiquette at our HS's "winter concert", I took the liberty of reminding the audience that the word is not the Americanized "holidays" but "holy days" and explain what holy means. Several hundred lights came on.

Find your opportunities and pick your spots to tell the story.

What constitutes a 'Christmas symbol?'

I have heard in several school districts where they are forbidden anything that resemble Christmas like X-mas trees, decorations, etc. I think it is getting out of hand. It has already taken place at work where they have a "holiday party" instead of a "christmas party".

there are a lot of problems going on here

first, there is a big back lash from seeing "Christmas symbols" popping up before folks have finished eating their Halloween candy

i'm already tired of hearing "Christmas music" (by the way, "Jingle Bells" is NOT "Christmas music")

America is not an exclusively Christian nation and even among the millions of Christians in the USA there are many many different Christian perspectives

this holiday blitz can be very overwhelmingly and, as a result, many folks "lash out"

much of the responsibility for this falls on the collective shoulders of Christians in America in that they have let secular entities hijack a special time of year for Christians

how did we go from "Goodwill on Earth and Peace to All Men" to 6AM CHRISTMAS BLOWOUT SALE!!!??

many of what folks regard as "Christmas symbols" have nothing to do with the Nativity, the birth of Jesus

trees??

yule logs?

mistletoe??

Santa Claus?????

no, the beautiful holiday of Christmas has been bastardized into a commercialized season of greed and superficiality

the merchants are back in the Temple

*it is sort of how i still can't understand how after a beautiful church wedding, a reception will have the throwing of the bouquet with the "catcher" being the next person to get married ... according to superstition of course but - and here is the rub - ?what place does superstitition have in a supposedly God-fearing wedding?

Christians, be proud and happy with Christmas

celebrate and rejoice

but keep it Christian

also respect that other folks are not comfortable with it

so what?

that is their red wagon

dont let other folks not "liking" what you're doing keep you from being happy

if folks dont like the Christmas decorations, ok, fine - that stuff does not belong in the work place anyway

keep it in your homes and in your heart where it matters most

Hassan, i'm no bible scholar and am not the foremost representative of christianity here, but there is nothing wrong with christianity being espoused in this country (who does it really hurt, how and why if it simply espouses christian principles?) and i don't see a problem with the symbols being displayed. they display satanic symbolism during halloween, are we to ban that? how bought Kwanza, are we to ban Kwanza symbols also if we ban Xmas/commercialized Xmas symbolism? why don't the muslims in Michigan keep their islamic prayers in their homes?

i wrote nothing about banning anything

i wrote that (A) Christians in this country need to recognize that they are not alone in this country and not be so "over the top" with the affectatious displays of "religion" that Jesus himself warned about in the Gospels and (B) Christians dropped the ball when they tacitly allowed mercantile interests in this country to kidnap the Christian holiday of Christmas for the purpose of making dollars instead of spreading peace on Earth

you let it go from prophet to profit

it is not a knock on Christmas

Christmas is a beautiful holiday that Christians need to protect by respecting the sanctity and essence of it

all of that is undermined when folks go "over the top" with things - it devalues a beautiful holiday

*Just remember the reason for the season folks

yeah but you know as well as I do that "certain elements" are using this "too commercial" ploy as a backdoor attack on christianity starting on the fringes with seemingly innocuous (spelling) things like putting up a Xmas tree for crying out loud. people filing law suites and complaining to the city council because of nativity displays. these types of things are ridiculous and so overtly anti-religion/christianity. again, i'm no authority on the bible/religion, i just look at things in terms of what makes sense and what don't make sense. the attacks on xmas don't make sense to me,, and this stuff about "it's too commercial",,, people can choose not to be commercial with it; why dey gotta attack it and try to stop it? that's over the top.

while Nativity Scenes seem to smack of idolatry, they still seem to be more appropriate for a Christian observance of a Christian holiday than trees and Santa

if non-Christians want to observe Christmas with trees and the such, that's on them

but i still have concerns about non-Christian aspects taking over a faith-based observance of a Christian holiday

sort of like Jews having a honey ham for Passover or Muslims marking the end of Ramadan with a bottle of Dom.

Sad to say...everything is a fad. Even Christianity is a fad for some people as well. If the Jones are praying standing up, then we need to be doing the same.

On the flip side of this, most things are done due to tradition or the popular saying "That's the way my Mother/Daddy/Grandparent did it". What reasons were behind their actions? Maybe some were less educated than the generation now. The present generation is able to read and decipher a little more than the previous generations. When you learn better, you should attempt to do better.
