Who's the best SWAC football player ever?

I was fortunate enough to see Doug throw down in old Tulane Stadium against S.U. in 74. The following year, I was privileged to see him open up the SUperDome in an aerial assault on Alcorn.

I was also fortunate enough to see Air McNair on the bluff in 93 against S.U. The following year, I was privileged to see him in Lorman against S.U. These were two incredible collegiate athletes......

What aerial assault on Alcorn?????? The Braves won that game and the score didn't reflect an aerial assault.

This is something that can never be answered.
So true because each in their particular position brought so much. So it would be hard to say Walter Payton then leave out Jerry Rice, but it would be hard to say Jerry and disregard Doug Williams. Then this becomes a issue that will not be resolved. So depending on the times. The younger people really won't know what Doug did actually, just saw the numbers.
So I guess this thread should've been "Who are the best players to ever play SWAC football?"

Umm, no smack, but I can't see how anyone could neglect to list Steve McNair as their greatest QB. Especially the folks from Gram, being that Alcorn and Grambling were involved in several of the greatest games in SWAC history during his era.

Are we counting college and pro? That dude was on another planet in college.

I have to agree with you there man.

Simple.

SWAC records.

If the question asks, 'who is the best SWAC football player', then I'd have to say Walter Payton.

If the questions intent is to ask 'who's the best FOOTBALL PLAYER that played in the SWAC, then I'd have to say Jerry Rice due to his stand-out SWAC credentials and his obvious NFL records which speak for themselves.

Records mean best ever? Come on now. Dont flip flop. The question was best ever. You are not answering the question.

Napoleon Kaufman played and was very productive with the Raiders for years.

Doug dominated during his 4 years as starter... I think we lost a total of about 5 games. Beat Temple, University of Hawaii, Oregon State and was Division 1 First Team All-American. Selectig Doug was not a knock on McNair, it was simply me picking Doug. If others think McNair that's cool...really!:lmao: :lmao:

So just because you beat Temple, Hawaii, and Oregon State, that makes Doug better? I guess stats don't mean much anymore.

Grambling defeated Alcorn in the Superdome opener... Sammie White had a big receiving game. Alcorn beat Grambling during Doug's redshirt freshman year (Doug wasn't the starter), Doug won his Soph year in the dome, Alcorn won 24-0 in Shreveport during Doug's junior year, and Doug won his senior year...(I think we went undefeated in the SWAC that year).

Just pointing out the caliber of competition that he produced against... Both were great qb's and lead their teams to championships. Doug played with more talent than Steve...so you can't discount what Steve did. The dude is simply Great... I just gave Doug the edge. Of the two, Doug was the much better passer. That's saying a lot because Steve was also a great passer and Mr. Clutch.

I remember somewhere that Deacon Jones played at MVSU also. Man if that's true the SWAC is truly a legendary conference. Walter Payton Jerry Rice Doug Williams, Steve McNair, L.C. Greenwood and a host of others have played or won a Superbowl.

I agree with some that questions should not even be asked because each player has contributed to the art of football in their on way.
