Who remember when Boxing was something of a Novelty?

With Ali's death, I went on youtube and looked at 70s and early 80s footage from the likes of him, Foreman, Holmes, Norton, Leonard, Hagler, and so on...

These men were definitely Kings growing up. Even when Tyson first came on the scene. I guess that is what normally happens in a society like ours. All is well until capitalists take over, then it is all messed up. It is what it is...

Today, I have no clue of who is the best heavyweight or even pound for pound boxer. I can say the same thing about UFC (I used to rent the videos with Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, and others in the beginning).

Anyways, this is for the good ole days....remember when your town would host some of these bouts on closed circuit tv? Man, my childhood in the 70s and 80s was cool....

Yep I remember as a kid in the 80's and early 90's going to my Grandparents for the fight party. Watching Tyson, Leonard, and others for free on USA or ABC. Then watching the Tyson PPV's in the late 80's early 90's. Great times.
 
Yes, those were the days in boxing. I can remember boxing in the Olympics back then. The U.S. won many gold medals. The U.S. will be lucky if we win a bronze in Rio.:(
 
The heavyweight division is actually on the rise since the Holyfield-Tyson-Lewis-Bowe-Old Foreman-Moorer-Morrison era.

Wilder is making noise and has the WBC, Tyson Fury is the recognized undisputed champion as he just ended Wladimir Klitschko's run at breaking Joe Louis record. Anthony Joshua is the IBF Champion and looks to be in the best shape of all of the other champions. All of those guys are exciting to watch.

It's getting better, but the problem is the Wilder is the only serious American Heavyweight right now. Boxing is alive and well outside of the USA. Once our guys start making a littler money and grabbing attention, they get lazy and fall off.
 
I watched this Wilder kid about a year ago. I was impressed. I've heard the name Tyson Fury. I guess I will check him out. All I know about the heavyweights of recent years is those Klitschko brothers from Russia (?).

Too many promotions and promoters all trying to make money which makes it hard to know who's who I guess....
 
Man, growing up in my younger days boxing was big stuff and ABC Wide World of Sports was the place to be!. We had a guy in the dorm @ S.U. that use to keep us rolling because he could imitate Ali arguing with anyone to a "T."

You are right, but the game is getting interesting again thanks to the Brits. Tyson Fury runs his mouth a lot and is a funny character.



Anthony Josuha is the IBF Champion and wants to knockout guys like Tyson did and sell tickets to the Americans.


And then you have David Haye back in the mix. Him and Shannon Briggs are supposed to get it on soon.
