Menard 1988

That was the year JH beat Many for the state title in football (JH's 2nd in a row) and Many beat JH in the basketball finals.

Coincidentally, we played both back-to-back in the regular season in addition to playing JH in the playoffs.

That same guy had his final HS punt returned for a TD by Bradford.... :upset: ...that was the memory I was talking about.

That JH team also had USL QB Tyjuan Hayes and UH OL Purvis Hunt. They were huge up front on both sides. There was a DE who was a junior that was better than the other linemen. I don't think he went anywhere though due to grades.

High School/Peabody High School - Paul Thompson, Basketball he made high school all american our senior year, (same year Dominic Wilkins came out of high school.) Went to Tulane and finished as thier all time leading scorer (until Hot Rod Williams came). Played in the NBA with Cleveland and Philidephia. Finished his pro career in Europe.

State - we all know that one was to much for anyone to answer, I we are really getting is your favorate great player.

The best highschool athlete to come out of Mississippi is Marcus Dupree. McNair and Payton had better careers, but neither of them were as good as Dupree coming out of Highschool. This man was about 6'3 240 with blazing speed and cut-back ability. He remains arguably the most highly recruited athlete in history.

I was a young tyke then but could vividly remember so many people elations when the Southern University and Claude T. Paxton coached (Southern U. & J.S. Clark) hurdler broke the world record. Also I know a little bit about that huge yearly "Relay Carnival" that J.S. Clark-Opelousas once was lauded for. As a matter of fact, I believe that Scotlandville High was nipped by J.S. Clark for the state championship on Southern U. track (pre-integration) prior to "Dice" arrival on the yard.

Yep....as a youngsta, I worked that meet, hauling hurdles and carrying water around. :nod:

And..Dice was the reason Claude T got the job at Southern....man, he was a terrible football coach...and we not gonna talk about all the "things" he was doing on the side....lets just say that there were fathers with shotguns chasing his azz down US 190 toward Baton Rouge.

I remember back in the gap watching Brian Mitchell and the "Juice" do their thing against my beloved bears (Shady Grove/North Iberville)...Remember watching Bobby Phills (R.I.P) light it up for the lab in our gym..I was about 7 or 8 back then...

Best athlete to come out of Shady Grove/North Iberville...I would hafta say it's a tie. (Shady Grove was changed to North Iberville in '92)
Shady Grove - Orlando Batiste: caused a family ruckus when he verbally committed to Coach Braddy to play baseball instead of following his uncle's wishes to play for Roger Cador. All-SWAC 3rd baseman damn near won the triple crown before leaving. All-state baseball player in HS


I would give J.B. Batiste honorable mention: pro baseball prospect and all-region JUCO player at SW Miss CC. Maleke Fowler led Division I in steals when he went to Nicholls and was drafted by the Orioles. Both of them were all-district in hoops and football. Wayne Hill was an RB for Grambling and was on the BC 25th anniversary team.

North Iberville - Melvin "M.J." Anderson: multi-sport star (basketball-Dunked on marcus fizer in the top 28) , baseball - played summer ball with "Lil Mike" Woods- and football)... he was all-state in baseball and basketball...All-SWAC third-baseman...But one the rise - Current Bear Sean Stockman is the 6'4" lefty who damn near pitched the Bears to the 1A title last season.

Mike Woods' parents are from maringouin, but I think the Broadmoor High-Baton Rouge people will claim him though

LOL i bet it does. That cat was usually the biggest thing on the field. I read the Willie Morris book about Dupree's recruitment, as well as numerous SI articles. Plus i've seen archived footage of him.

Yeah, the '88 squad was very good. My last year was '87 when we beat Springhill for the championship that year. The best J-H teams were either the '87 or '86 squad (in '86 we lost to John Curtis in the semis but Wossman, who won our district title, waxed Curtis in the finals).

Norman's class went to the Dome three consecutive years from 1988-90, winning two of them. In '87, Norman played with our freshman/JV squads but traveled with the varsity once the playoffs began. He was truly a gifted athlete!

Oh, and that DL was probably Lynn "Hitman" Hart who starred at Gram and was an All-SWAC performer.

I forgot about Johnny Meads from AHS. He played college football @ Nicholls State and then went on to play pro ball with the Houston Oilers for about 8-10 years.
