Whites In JSU et al HBCU Bands

This is true. When Dowell Taylor took over as JSU's band director, SU was the band Taylor copied. Taylor copied the best and JSU became the best during Taylor's tenure.

In what fashion has Taylor copied SU? Please go in details!

The one thing that we changed his first year in the Boom was NOT playing while dancing. That is the one thing the we HATED.

We were a band that DID NOT take out horns down to dance. If that is what he's talking about.....then he's right. We HATED that crap!

I hate that now!

What I'm really tired of seeing is people putting down other folks' band programs to uplift theirs. Pride is one thing, but some of the statements I read on these boards are just downright stupid.

I was just on marchingsport, and i coulda swore i saw a white boy(at least he looked white)playin the quads!!!

And down lil one. Some people on here didnt know whether r not whites ever made the band at jSU. I was browsin MP and came across a clip that showed a white boy, so I put it out there that there has been a white member of the boom. I bet u thought I was tryin to smack hunh?! Stop bein so defensive all the time.:slap:

Nah, I didn't think you were trying to smack. :)

I just see where the originator focus was not on white band members but more on white DMs and dancing team members.

Yeah, we can always count on someone from SU to know BOOM history and BOOM current news.

There u go!!! Well since alot of yur BD's have come from SU........nope, nope, I'm not gonna start right now. Well the clip looks like its maybe 1-2 yrs old, so if thats what u consider history,:tdown: !!! Bullisht........

The fact that Duplessis and Adams went to Southern doesn't mean we copied anything... Duplessis was at SU before Greggs came and Adams never served as a director at SU... The adagio step and tiger run-on didn't come from Baton Rouge. And the stereophonic sound certainly didn't.... Let's face it, Adams was the best thing outta Southern back then, and he landed at JSU... And that's why most of the Boom tunes back then ran circles around anything the 'S' came with... It had to be nearly impossible to out-arrange Taylor, (Russell) Thomas AND Adams........

And Taylor didn't copy anything from SU.... Didn't need to....

The distinction between the two bands were way more evident THEN than NOW anyway...

Man, people will get on this muah-phugga and TYPE anything....... :shame:

Okay?!?!?!?

And to insinuate that The Boom was not at it's best prior to Taylor is assinine...:o

Paul Adams Was an assistant for years at SU and learned to arrange from current assistant Mr. Knighten. And Duplessis was there under Doc. Where are you getting the false info from, or are you just throwing it out there thinking that no one else will know. Now the nation was staying out of this, but there isn't enough to talk about at J-stank without bringing up SU, If we suck so bad and yall hate us so much why is it that we are your favorite topic of discussion. Grow up, and keep the Jukebox out your mouth!

Why don't you ask the originator since he started the thread? He is the one that mentioned SU in his post about JSU. :read:
Others responded to it.

He may have mistakenly left the 'J' off of the SU, but we'll never know unless he comes back and tell us if it was a mistake.

Specifically i am curious about JSU.

  1. Has there ever been a white Tigerette (or whatever they are called) at JSU?
  2. Has there ever been a white drum major at JSU?
  3. I'm sure there has been a white JSU band member so i won't ask.

In general, has there ever been white dancing whatevers at SU et al HBCUs? Just curious. (the rest is not for the band forum, but in general) I mean who were the first whites to "integrate" HBCU bands, athletics, schools for that matter?

Your point as related to the topic is......

I guess what else we know? That SU originally played 'Get Ready' before JSU...
Just thought I would mention it since you forgot to say it this time.
