White Gentrification of Core Black Neighborhoods

There's actually an anti-gentrification movement of sorts occurring in Houston's 3rd ward. Lately I've noticed a lot of signs in people's yards stating "This house is not for sale". I can't say I blame them one bit.

That's how it is supposed to be. Also, I blame realtors for this. If a realtor went in and told some of these homeowners about their options...this would not be happening.
 



My wife and I used to live on 13th and Clifton st NW in DC and I remeber going to my car one night to get something when a white couple went past me as they walked their dog. I thought they were lost or something because if you are familiar with the DC area this neighborhood was known for it's drug and crime activity but this couple that I thought was lost actually lived a few houses down from our apartment.This was just the beginning and now you can't even recognize the place as the many black faces have been replaced with white ones but hey they spent their money so why should I or anyone frown because they moved in.Eventually we moved to PG county for a few years followed by Howard,and now Harford county which is just north of Baltimore.Prices in DC have priced alot of young professionals black or white out of the area.If you look at what has happened to the 14th st corridor you will see the economic benefits of gentrification but we need to see this happen without white folks having to move in.This is why I preach ownership to my people because often times we spend money on things that depreciate in value ie clothes,cars,etc.. when we should be looking to own even if it is a condo.If the black people who lived in many of these places new what they had they could have at least gotten paid for it and moved on to something better but instead many took pennies on the dollar while the next man made a fortune.This is what happens when people lack the knowledge of how to acquire wealth.I think every person on this board should get a free membership to Black Enterprise's website and make a committment to the black wealth iniative.

Houston folks never had much ownership in 3rd ward so it was easy to take the land....

What they are doing now is buiding urban townhomes in areas where it was industrial and the land was vacant nearby. You put enough of those homes there and eventually it spreads to residential areas.

Fourth ward is gone, 3rd ward is slowly going and the majority of black folks are being pushed out to beyond the Beltway and taking over areas whites ran out to. Whites run further and further out and we follow only to reverse course and come back in - mainly single, white professionals.

I'm definitely thinking about moving back to the District....My pops is still there in NW (5th and Kennedy St.) and he mentions that there are condos popping up in the old neighborhood almost every week...

I definitely agree with getting the knowledge out there to "our folks" so revitalization of our neighborhoods can happen, not de-gentrification...


that also has alot to do with the folks that are currently in these neighborhoods taking an interest in how these areas flourish themselves...

We still don't invest enough into our own neighborhoods to keep the folks that are supposed to be there. you take a look at some of the areas in NW and NE Dc and you'll see the following on any given thoruroughfare:

chinese carry out
liquor store
convenience store
check-cashing spot
liquor store
chinese carry out
liquor store
pawn shop
convenience store
chinese carry out
liquor store
church
liquor store


How many black-owned businesses do we see??? not many...How much of this commerce goes back into the neighborhoods? Not nuch. Yet black folks are the biggest consumers in these areas...We're practically the only consumers.

That's a huge problem...We do have to get our folks into ownership, but that's only part of the solution; There has to be a viable economic base for alot of these communities that doesn't take away more than it gives back...

I grew up in the Fort Totten section of NE DC so I am quite familiar with 5th & Kennedy and I can testify to what you have posted because this is what most DC neighborhoods look like(well at least on our side of the city).I used to spend much money at the corner stores and carryouts when I went to Coolidge but sadly hardly any were owned by us.
