White bands are trying to catch on!

I was watching the Wake-Forest first round game and I'm not going crazy but I know I heard them playing "Big Ballin". I positive because I even go closer to the television when I heard it to make sure. :eek: :eek: :eek:

I know no white schools are High-steppin. But some are trying to capture the sound. The only problem is that its not just the music its a complete package. The Music, Sound, Dance, Attittude, and Soul the really sells it.

Is this a growing trend or a isolated occurence? :scared:
 



It's a growing trend and Drumline helped to catapult it. Pretty soon HBCU bands won't have anything to call their own, if this keeps up.

Washington Huskie band also. They were trying to copy Black school style ever since I was college.

I remember as a Senior in high school it was a White high school from Dover,Ohio. That was the funkiest White high school band I ever saw. They were really dancing. They had a funky dance routine too along with a drum cadence.I think they were trying to be like Memphis Booker T. Washington. The funkiest high school band that ever was. Memphis Booker T high school's band was famous nation wide in the mid Seventies. :D

I guess you guys don't know who's directing these large white bands. They all have assistants from HBCU's and that includes, SEC, Big Ten, PacTen schools as well. Ohio State has had a black assistant for many years. Plus almost every High school on Chicago southside has a band Director from either Grambling or Southern. :)

These bands can't be put in the "copycat" class of other white bands.

They have been dancing, marching "8 to 5", and fast stepping forever.
When I was in highschool, my band director marched with Michigan in the 70's. He showed us old tapes of them clowning.

Staggalee is right! Actually I believe it was Micjhigan State that most HBCU bands compied their styles from, and then just changed them up a little bit. Michigan State invented the fast march (double time). The also high-stepped. I know, I've seen old tapes. :tup:
 
For the last time know your history folks lol. Most of the bands ya'll think are copying are the ones that invented the style. We just borrowed it. In some instances they have moved on to other styles and do some of the old stuff for traditional purposes.

The high stepping style orginally comes from the Univ. of Michgan's band. The legendary FAMU band director Pat Foster absorb this style 6 decades ago while in Ann Arbor, Mich. Southern Univ. followed under Tommy L. Davis Sr. followed by Ludwig Freeman who received his B.S. from SU and his master degree from U of Mich. where he marched in the band. Much of the way shows are done now comes from Freeman (dance routines, drum cadences, etc.). FAMU, SU, & Tenn. St. added a soulful flare to this style.

"Staggalee" huh! That's that old Wilson Pickett song. That's cool :cool:

But hey, those schools can try to do what we do. All we have to do as HBCU schools is step the game up and get better. If we want to call what we do our style, we have to continue to prove that.

It is just music people!!!! Its not like the HBCU's have automatic rights to any rap or R&B songs that come out. If that was the case why weren't the so called "white bands" complaining when we were playing "Toxic" by Brittany Spears. Some of us need to get rid of this complex that is hold them in the darkness of ignorance.
