Many of you realize that I'm constantly referring to SU folk on the Smack board as Yellas. I do this only in jest and for smack purposes. However, it is truly a problem in our community and regretfully, it has some credence at SU.
Jackie, don't get offended! But there are still some backward thinking people in our society who feel this way. Unfortunately, we also have many of us who are darker than blue who are just as bad. We stereotype our lighter skinned brothers and sisters and think that all of them are "bouegie" (sp). I am happy to say that I have met many light skinned brothers and sisters here in BR who have gotten past the sentiment of not wanting to be with a person of a darker shade.
When I moved here in 79, I was surprised that this type of segregation actually existed. Maybe I was naive but this attitude was not prevalent in my home town. We had families with light and dark siblings (depending on who resembled which parent). My dear departed Grandmother (of whom I was the favorite) referred to me as that "black un" because my now deceased brother was lighter. I never got offended, perhaps because I knew from her telling me that "you're my black boy...you took after my daddy". I always saw my skin color as being part of my pet name and it didn't bother me.

I was in High School around that time, hanging out on campus trying to lie to some Delta's and AKA'S saying I was a freshman I later found out that this trick only worked on Tougaloo's campus.

She use to be on channel 8 back in the day when I was in the 3rd grade, (I'm 37 now, do the math
). She was the first black anchor in Dallas. Man she was a super star to us. But you are right she is neither bright or young

I am not offended. Whatever someone thinks about me is on them, especially about something I can't do a dayum think about.
I do disagree with you that this is a "problem" and prevalent only at Southern. It is a problem for all African Americans everywhere. It is a destructive issue started by slave owners as a means to divide us as a people that WE continue to exploit.
I am who I am. Dark as 1,000 midnights, black as coffee, gotta smile to see me, blue black, ALL THAT!

Well now I am going to have to disagree with you on this. I am originally from the L.A. area (Inglewood). And I never knew this to be an issue until my freshman year at Greatness. I was trying to push up on this sista from Ft. Worth who was just light as I was. Eventually, she hooked up with my best friend (at the time). It was later that they both told me that the reason she was not interested in me was because I was too bright! I'm like WTF!!!! Yo azz is as light as I am. My friend was darker.
I guess maybe this is more of an issue down in the South. But it isn't one that is that prevalent on the West Coast.

Anyway that girl probably was expressing a PREFERNCE, not degrading her own race! Most light skinned men are attracted to dark skinned women and vice-a verse-a, I know that works for me! :lmao:

Uhhhhhh while you trippin, my mamma is from Grambling by way of Natchitoches which is where both of my Grandparents are from. On spring break I would go to Natcitoches to stay with my folks.

Well for as long as I can remember there haven't been to many "Dark" skinned sista is the media. Its just the way it is. If there is a "brown" skinned sista she has long flowing hair and all that. There aren't to many "ethnic" sistas on TV. "LL the only one that I can think of is that gurl on Girlfriend. The one with the sista lips. How many folks have looked at her and said she was cute?
