Zags get No. 1 seed, play Southern

When the Zags and Jags clashed two years ago, the storyline centered on GU center Robert Sacre and his father, Greg LaFleur, who was Southern’s athletic director at the time. Elias Harris, one of five current Zags to play against Southern, remembered making a spin move and a dunk and vaguely recalled going against Madut Bol, son of former NBA center Manute Bol, who died in June, 2010. Madut Bol led Southern with 12 points.

One connection this time around is that Gary Bell Jr.’s father is a Baton Rouge native and attended Southern.

“I knew who they were when their name popped up on the (television) screen,†Bell said. “I don’t think my dad played there. He ended up leaving school to go into the Navy. All of my dad’s side of the family is down there, grandma, grandpa, Dad’s sister. I’m getting a lot of text messages.â€

Southern, under second-year coach Roman Banks, was ineligible for the postseason last year because of APR penalties. The Jaguars finished second this year in the SWAC regular season behind Texas Southern, which was ineligible for the SWAC Tournament because of APR penalties. The Jaguars edged Prairie View 45-44 for the SWAC title.

apperntly they think that this is the same team that they faced two years ago. they will be in for a surprise. what a difference two years makes

I looked at their message board. Some think they will beat us by 50. I don't know. I know they are a powerhouse but Gonzaga will NEVER EVER win a CHAMPIONSHIP. Those clowns have the best regular season damn near every year and never made a damn Final Four.

When Hampton pulled off the upset I really enjoyed it. I say lets go Jags. March madness is here. Who knows what can happen. This same team was taken for a joke 10 years ago because they had all white males. Now folks forget about that. America is funny.

JSU is like the lil kid in the neighborhood who everyone enjoys seeing get beat up. You know its wrong, but yet you enjoy seeing him get whipped every time.

Zaga is a good team. Cant put them in a powerhouse category yet. That #1 seed is just on paper. They were a Cinderella team when Adam Morrison was playing for them. :lol:

I like Gonzaga... Lol.. I will be cheering for Southern for once. I won't cheer too loudly.

They are far from a powerhouse. They struggle to get past the 2nd round every year.

While they've not gotten to the Final Four, Gonzaga has made the tournament 15 straight years, winning more than 23 games in those years and have accrued five seasons of 28 or more wins. Gongaza is an elite basketball program. Southern has to score more than 45 points to beat them.

Playing in the WCC they are pretty much guaranteed 20+ wins. My definition of elite is winning titles, not just making the tournament and getting knocked out early every year. It is funny because it seems like once Gonzaga began getting "respect" they have not managed to live up to the hype in the post-season. This year's team is very finesse.

We have to score more than 45 points to beat any tourney team pretty much. LOL.

I don't know about that one. I may be dumb to think, but I believe SU is not going out quietly if at all. The Zags aren't unbeatable and SU have some real grit this year

I didn't even sign up. Their dumb azz looked at the schedule and kept saying we played Southern Miss and somebody else. I forgot who. :smh:

Southern metamorphosis

It’s one of the most impressive turnarounds in college basketball, so swift it even caught coach Roman Banks by surprise.

Banks inherited a Southern University program coming off the worst season in school history, a 4-26 record in 2011 that included a 117-72 loss to Gonzaga. To complicate matters, APR penalties left the Jaguars ineligible for postseason play in Banks’ first season.

Southern, located in Baton Rouge, La., overcame those obstacles to win 17 games. The Jaguars followed that up with 23 wins, a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament title and a spot in the NCAA tournament, where they’ll face No. 1-seeded Gonzaga on Thursday at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City.
