What if the NFL and NBA also decide to contract?

I know that you all have heard that Major League Baseball is planning to eliminate two franchises before next season, likely the Expos and the Twins. Let's say that the "spirit of contraction" spreads to the other major sports leagues....which teams from the NFL and the NBA do you think would get the ax?

I don't think that will happen anytime soon. There are too many cities that want a team in both leagues, for the fact that they're an easy sell.

There are too many games in the baseball season, not to mention a lot of baseball games are played during working hours, so you won't see a lot of teams selling out series during the course of year.

Washington, DC is the only city really trying to get a baseball team, where as you have cities like Columbus, San Antonio, and LA, trying to get football.

Then you have St. Louis, Louisville, New Orleans, Anaheim, San Diego, Cincinnati, and few other cities trying to get basketball teams. I think if baseball had that kind of leverage, they wouldn't consider contracting.

Then there's a cap in both leagues, and not to mention there's revenue sharing amongst the owners in those league's as well.

The NBA & NFL, both have big contracts with several networks, where as baseball has ESPN, & Fox.

NICE

Yes. I know that baseball's situation is different from the other leagues. You're right that there are a lot more cities looking at getting an NFL or NBA franchise, than a baseball team. I saw where DC/northern Virginia was the only area seriously pushing to get a baseball team.

But if there just had to be a franchise to eliminate....in the NBA, I would say that the Hawks, the Warriors, and the Nuggets are struggling with their fan bases. The Grizzlies were, too, before the Memphis move. The Hornets are probably out of Charlotte one day. And personally, I think the Clippers should move back to San Diego - because the Lakers own L.A.

In the NFL, I'd look at the Seahawks, the Bengals, and the Cardinals...

But the franchises themselves are ok - I'd just have issues with those particular cities.

kci, the people here in DC, really want a baseball team. A temporary stadium is in place, and there's discussion about putting a new stadium nere the Pentagon, as a memorial for the fallen on 9/11/01.

The Hornets have put in a relocation application already, and are trying to move to St. Louis. The Bengals, and Seahawks won't be going anywhere no time soon. The Bengals just moved into a taxpayer paid stadium last year, and The Seahawks will move into their new stadium next year.

I feel you on the Hawks though, man they don't even sell out playoff games in The Atl.

This will sound silly. But I do not think that the Hawks will move anytime soon. The powers, business and political, will want and fight to keep the Hawks because of the prestige of having a pro sports' team. Atlanta is an image conscious city, and in the minds of many, the image would take a huge hit if the Hawks left. Folks in the city do not want that image to take a hit.

BTW even during the Dominique, Doc Rivers and Spud Webb years, the Hawks had trouble selling out during the playoffs. Compare this to Houston and Dallas when their teams were in the playoffs. In those cities basketball was the hottest ticket in town, and one had to pay at least $200 for the nose bleed seats.

As for baseball I will say a few words now. But I think that Montreal and one of the Florida teams may need to leave. I will think about it for awhile and will comment later.
