14 reported killed as 'day of rage' hits Libya

TRIPOLI — Libyan protesters seeking to oust longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi defied a crackdown and took to the streets in four cities Thursday on what activists have dubbed a "day of rage," amid reports that at least 14 demonstrators have been killed in clashes with pro-government forces.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said Libyan internal security forces also have arrested at least 14 people.

Hundreds of pro-government demonstrators rallied in the capital, Tripoli, blocking traffic in some areas, witnesses said.

An opposition website and an anti-Gadhafi activist said unrest broke out during marches in four Libyan cities Thursday.

Organizers were using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to call for nationwide demonstrations.

"Today the Libyans broke the barrier or fear, it is a new dawn," said Faiz Jibril, an opposition leader in exile.

Gadhafi's government has moved quickly to try to stop Libyans from joining the wave of uprisings in the Middle East that have ousted the leaders of Egypt and Tunisia.

Bloody crackdown smashes Bahrain protesters

MANAMA, Bahrain — At least four people were killed Thursday after riot police used buckshot, tear gas and clubs to drive protesters from a main square in Bahrain's capital Manama, where they had been been demanding political change.

Armed patrols prowled neighborhoods and tanks also appeared in the streets for the first time Thursday.

Medical officials said four people were killed, although there were unconfirmed reports of more casualties, with one website claiming 20 people had been "martyred."

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, who is in Bahrain, said that more than 600 people had been treated for their injuries and an opposition lawmaker, Ibrahim Mattar, told Reuters that 60 people were missing.

Bahrain's health minister, Faisal bin Yaqoob al-Hamer, said Thursday that three people had been killed and 231 injured in the police raid on Pearl Square, where people had gathered since Monday in an attempt to emulate the successful protest camp on Cairo's Tahrir Square.

These young middle east people are tired of these outdated hard line Muslims. They pitching a byotch in every country. The U.S. 5th fleet is off shore watching Bahrain right now. Yemen, Iran, and probably 2 other countries have been battling it's citizens or the ruling families have been promising government reforms trying to head off the same.

Even JORDAN , where you wouldn't expect trouble like this, has felt the pressure too. This happened 2 weeks ago when trouble in Egypt got serious.
Shake up in Jordan......King Abdullah Dissolves government

There is about to be major changes. Just depends who come out on top. These terrorist cells or the people.

So true! I'm sure the US has spies in these countries paying close attention to this.

They better have their eye's and ears open on every corner. If they don't, then US intel agency or whatever they called, the CIA, is just dumb. I would be working every undercover I got in these countries right now so that 3rd hand info would not be needed like in Iraq.

We had more than third hand info in Iraq. The powers that be just using that as an excuse for the War we got into. LOL. We always have good intel. Whether we choose to use it the right way or not is strictly the issue. Just like 9-11. We knew those mofos were in this country. Just ignored isht. We also knew damn well Sadaam didn't have weapons of mass destruction. We never had any proof he did.

What will be the issue with all these countries having uprising is how involved will we be behind the scenes.

Re: Bloody crackdown smashes Bahrain protesters

Right on JR. Folks kidding themselves if they think for one second if they thought that we really believed that Saddam had WMD's.

Well one thing is for sure.

These Middle East countries and Europe can't blame the United States this time. Their own people have kicked the door wide open and are no longer chanting "Death to America" but Death to their own leaders for putting a foot in their azzes for the last half century.

Bout time they focused on their real problem in their countries instead of blamming the U.S. for everything.

Just nice to see these fools focusing their energy where it belongs and that being these dictators that has been getting wealthy off their backs while they starve and blame the US.

Re: Bloody crackdown smashes Bahrain protesters

Never thought I would see LYBIA on the ropes. That fool is actually using warplanes, snipers, and anti-aircraft guns on protesters but they keep comming. This IS the tide that will change the Middle East and the Muslim world forever.

Libya crackdown continues, but cracks spread
Militiamen loyal to Muammar Qaddafi clamped down in Tripoli, but cracks in his regime spread elsewhere across the nation, as the protest-fueled rebellion controlling much of eastern Libya claimed new gains closer to the capital. Two pilots let their warplane crash in the desert, parachuting to safety, rather than bomb an opposition-held city.

The opposition said it had taken over Misrata, which would be the largest city in the western half in the country to fall into its hands. Clashes broke out over the past two days in the town of Sabratha, west of the capital, where the army and militiamen were trying to put down protesters who overwhelmed security headquarters and government buildings, a news website close to the government reported

These two Lybian Air Force commanders refused to fire on own people, flew to Malta. Other planes have tried but were denied permission to land. Others are carring out orders.

Libya Air Force Jets in Malta, Pilots Seek Asylum
Two Libyan air force jets landed in Malta on Monday and their pilots asked for political asylum amid a bloody crackdown on anti-government protesters in Libya, a military source said.

The two Mirage jets landed at Malta International Airport shortly after two civilian helicopters landed carrying seven people who said they were French. A military source familiar with the situation said the passengers had left in such a hurry that only one had a passport

Re: Bloody crackdown smashes Bahrain protesters

Full court press is on from all msides in Lybia. His own people are resigning and telling off on him now. Ain't like people didn't know this but now proof is comming from the inner circle now.

Gadhafi Ordered Lockerbie Bombing, Minister Says
Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi personally ordered the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 that killed 270 people, the country's recently resigned justice minister said today.

In an interview with Swedish newspaper Expressen, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, a confidant of Gadhafi's who resigned his post amid this week's anti-government protests and civil strife, said, "I have proof that Gadhafi gave the order about Lockerbie."

Re: Bloody crackdown smashes Bahrain protesters

Problem is we look at them people fighting in the streets for "freedom" from dictatorship..

We are taught that we live in a democracy.... but if you have to parties controlling a nation with the same ideals and the people are seeing the same results, isn't that too a dictatorship?

We don't think it is because we go out and "vote"...lmao but what options do we have?

There are many blacks that believe in Jesus Christ and have morals..... but the party we suport heavily don't offer that... and "Nothing" is being done about it...we might not be in a strict dictatorship.. but best believe we are just going along with the flow just as much as those people in egypt were...

'No option is off the table,' Clinton says as U.S. moves military forces closer to Li

Gadhafi has launched the most brutal crackdown of any Arab regime facing a wave of anti-government uprisings spreading quickly around the Middle East.

Advertise | AdChoicesAdvertise | AdChoicesAdvertise | AdChoicesBut international pressure to end the crackdown has escalated dramatically in the past few days.

The U.S. moved naval and air forces closer to Libya on Monday and said all options were open, including patrols of the North African nation's skies to protect its citizens from their ruler.

France said it would fly aid to the opposition-controlled eastern half of the country.

The European Union imposed an arms embargo and other sanctions, following the lead of the U.S. and the U.N.

Chavez: I won't condemn 'my friend' Gadhafi

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez refused Monday to condemn Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and warned the United States was preparing an invasion of the North African country to seize control of its oil reserves.

"We must be prudent. We know what our political line is: We don't support invasions, or massacres, or anything like that no matter who does it. A campaign of lies is being spun together regarding Libya," said Chavez, in a televised speech to a crowd of graduates who had just received diplomas from state universities.

"I'm not going to condemn him (Gadhafi)," he said. "I'd be a coward to condemn someone who has been my friend."

The U.S. government is behind the campaign to remove Gadhafi, he added.

"The United States has already said it's ready to invade Libya, don't you see? And almost all the countries of Europe are condemning Libya ... What do they want? They are rubbing their hands together. Oil is what's important to them," he said.

Syrian protesters: ‘It is your turn now, Bashar’

AMMAN — The killing of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi fueled anti-government rallies across Syria after Friday prayers and security forces killed 13 people in a continued crackdown on protesters seeking President Bashar al-Assad's ouster, activists said.

Protesters found a heavier than normal security presence in Syria on the day after Gadhafi's death, which could embolden protesters across an Arab world where unrest has toppled three autocratic leaders this year and challenged others like Assad.

Most of Friday's killings were in the central city of Homs and in Hama to the north, both hotbeds of anti-Assad protests and the targets of major military operations to put them down.

Homs, the city of one million, has also witnessed a nascent insurgency emerging after repeated attempts by tank-backed troops to suppress demonstrations calling for an end to 41 years of Assad family rule and more political freedoms.

"Gadhafi is finished. It's your turn now, Bashar!" shouted demonstrators in the town of Maaret al-Numaan in the northwestern province of Idlib, according to one witness.

"Prepare yourself Assad!" chanted protesters in the town of Tayyana in the tribal province of Deir al-Zor, on the border with Iraq.

Gadhafi died in unclear but bloody circumstances shortly after the fugitive former strongman was captured by transitional government forces, two months after he was driven from power.

Assad, an ophthalmologist who inherited power from his late father in 2000, strengthened ties with Gadhafi months before the tide of popular Arab unrest against repressive ruling elites erupted in Tunisia in December.
