What Band Director had or has the longest tenure as Band Director in the SWAC?

Samuel Griffin has been at Alcorn forever. I think mid or late 60's.

Yes, Alcorn State hired Sam Griffen FRESH out of college in 1967. (he's a graduate of Jackson State). Went from marching one year to being a college band director the next. Ay, that's how we do it at JSU. lol.

Yes he has. He reminds me of those old folks in the church that don't want to let go of some positions. They don't realize they're doing more harm than good.

Actually, he was an assistant for a year or two before he became head band director. He is closing in on 40 years as head band director at Alcorn. I love Grif, but IMO he needs to let it go.

He should want to retire. 40 years on ANY job is long enough.

:lmao: I feel you on that Soror. But you know how those Band Directors are. The same with these football coaches.

Doc Greggs did it from 1969 to 2005. Just didn't want to retire. If I had the money he has. I would have been retired before that time. I am ready to retire right now at 41. LOL

And preachers/bishops too!!! It's ridiculous to hold on to something that long; you end up hurting more than helping. But you're too selfish and set in your ways to recognize (or don't care) what you're doing.

Griff needs to sit down, and Dr. Jimmie James needs to follow. And Liddell needs to either retire or move over into the music department chair seat. All of them have been in higher education music since the civil rights movement. We done "overcame" and everythang. Move on! Know when to make a gracious exit or get annoyingly and forcefully pushed. Goodness.

Do you guys think it is going to be a major fallout when Liddell steps down? I can imagine a lot of current and former JSU directors wanting that job.

Greggs's bands were always consistently good, even in his 36th year as Band Director. You can't say the same for some other SWAC Band Directors.

I don't think so.
I'm sure there will be plenty of folks wanting the job though. Personally, I wanna see Magruder come back at director of bands.

You are right about that.. Just step down and let some new capable and qualified young blood take over.

Magruder probably will assume the position, if he wants it, because he has a PhD, personally I would like to see James Holden or Stephanie Sanders fill the position.

If Magruder gets it, I don't know anyone who would be mad about that decision--- young and old.

Not really talking about the alumni and fans. I am talking about the current and potential members of the band staff. Will there be haters among them who will either leave or refuse to come back to help if they (or their buddy) don't get the position? A band is only as good as its assistants. JSU has great assistants out there helping to build other programs.

I think it was 3 years ago when Mr. Harold Haughton was in Jackson for the Sonic Boom Reunion Banquet. He said in front of everybody that he "stole" James ?Fish? Holden from JSU because he was the best at what he did. If you'll attend the 2008 Honda Battle of the Bands, VA State's Marching Trojans, with Boom alum James "Fish' Holden as Asst. Band Director, will surprise people with their big, well-balanced sound and great field show. I can't speak for everyone, but it would sure be nice to have James "Fish" Holden back at Jackson State. Awesome arrangements and new field drills--- new direction.

How long has Holden been at VaState. If is that good and has Haughton's endorsement, he is probably waiting for Haughton to step down at VaState so he can just slide right in there.
