What are Your Favorite Black Movies?

Bartram

Brand HBCUbian
What black-oriented movies are a must-have in your DVD/VHS collection? Some of the tops on my list are:

  • School Daze (alltime classic)
  • How I Spent My Summer Vacation (great low budget)
  • The Brothers (current favorite, great cast)
  • The Best Man (previous current favorite)
  • How to be a Player (vintage Bill Bellamy)
  • Booty Call (Vivica Fox and whats-her-name, AMN-DEY.)
  • Soul Food (Vanessa, hubbie & cousin,, just so many great
    story lines in this one.)
  • Rosewood (tell me something I don't know.)
  • She's Gotta Have It (ventage Spike Lee,, this was all the rage
my frosh year at Skegee! )
  • Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (90% of board clueless.)
  • A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (classic cast)
  • Black Spring Break (low budget but interesting insight)
  • Set it Off (interesting to see characters in roles)
  • New Jack City (vintage Ice Tee and Wesley Snipes)
  • Tuskegee Airmen (or coarse)
  • Glory (which I got to get)
  • Love Jones (,, need to watch again)
  • South Central (followed kinda)
  • Poetic Justice (didn't really follow)
  • Mississippi Masala (this was a weird movie, but the mixing of
the African and Indian race was unique,, and
apparantly not popular. haven't seen such
since. thoroughly enjoyed this one though.)

Mandingo and The Spook Who Sat By the Door
are two favorites of mine.
Pisses me off every time I watch them.:redhot:

Wealth of Info! What about black sitcoms?

I actually read but never seen The Spook That Sat by the Door.:)

Let's do it Again is great. I must get that one. There is so many classics I forgot about! Did anyone mention Shaft? I saw one just last night with the guy from A Different World and that other old dude from the Jamie Fox Show. That is a classic.:)

I would like to have the sitcoms on DVD also like:
Good Times
What's Happening
The White Shadow
The Jeffersons
I got the Sanford & Son series
Baby I'm Back
,,, and of coarse all the ones from the 90s like,,,
N.Y. UNDERCOVER (i was devastated when they took this show off the air.:redhot: THAT WAS MY SHOW! The intro music was bout my favorite part of the show!:D )
Rock
A Different World
Living Single
The Cosbys (although I got a little sick of the "messages")
The one with LL Cool J
The Steve Harvey Show
The Jamie Fox Show (borderline)
,, et al that I missed,,, what are some other black sitcoms?

I know I've said this time and time again.....
but Bartram asked so...

A Different World
The above is my favorite, hands down.
This show got me to college....I managed to get
myself to Grad school.
;)

cosby.jpg

I can't say enough about this one.....
call it to preachy if you want, but it influennced
a whole generation of black professionals, myself
included. I think it can be traced to the Medical
and Legal ambitions of the great bulk of black
"20 somethings" in those fields. Also it showed
a side of black life that television had been reluctant
to show prior to Cosby.

The Jeffersons
One of the best. "Lionel"-Mike Evans is the
co-creator of "Good Times". "Helen"-Roxie Roker
(who died in '98) was the mother of my favorite
rocker, Lenny Kravitz.

Good Times
Ain't we glad we had them, "Good Times"?
Every familiar face in film in the 70's came through
this show. This show introduced my favorite female
artist, Janet Jackson.

Other notables:
Living Single- 1st black sitcom to show Gen X-Professionals.
New York Undercover-If only for the musical guest.
City of Angels Had great writers, and a very talented
cast, but was never given a chance to succeed.
I wrote the network when it was cancelled.
