What about SU and those NCAA penalties?

Does the removal of penalties applies to SU also?

I am sure it does. But I was told we were not going to be ineligible for football anyway next season. That we were going to be okay regardless. Now basketball, it is some great news for SU. Because even though we had a 1000 APR recently for the bball team. It was not going to be enough to overcome the years of it being low. So Coach Banks got a big boost with this news if it indeed gives HBCUs more time to get APR up. I know Coach Mitchell was lobbying that this was unfair last year with the NCAA and the SWAC. Then we applied and got turned down for the waiver for basketball. Our new AD should be all over this news and we should be ready to roll for the 2012-2013 sports year! But I will wait until official word comes from him on this.

I think it depends on if you meet the conditions outlined by the NCAA. JSUs APR improved 27 points to a 913. If SU improved similarly, they should qualify for the waiver.

In that case we will be fine for basketball for sure. LOL. I think football was on track anyway. But you are right, it depends on what the NCAA guidelines are. If we had any kind of commish, the SWAC office would already be on top of this to put the info out there.

Yeah, basketball was our concern. We only needed to improve by a point for football.

I truly hope you guys get some of the crumbs falling from the table set by JSU.:emlaugh:

Did you not read that it was multiple schools on that call that convinced the NCAA to listen? This wasn't about JSU. Lol. Don't you ever sit there and think all it took was one HBCU or low resource school that made this happen. Hell, Stump got laughed at by some of yall when he was the first coach to complain. Lol. This wasn't JSU vs the NCAA by themselves on that call that made the NCAA vote on this.

Relief on the way for SU?

The NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors approved a proposal Thursday to give “low-resource institutions” more time to comply with tougher academic requirements — a move that may wiped the slate clean for Southern, allowing its men’s basketball and football teams to avoid another postseason ban.

According to the new measure, low-resource institutions — many of them historically black colleges, including Southern — won’t have to hit the new four-year benchmark score of 930 on the Academic Progress Rate until 2016-17, one year later than all other schools.

And though the two-year averages will be waived for the low-resource schools, all institutions must maintain a four-year average of 900 to be eligible for championship events each of the next two seasons.

Athletic Director William Broussard said that although Southern had not received notification from the NCAA on Thursday, he believes the SU men’s basketball team — which served a postseason ban this year because of its substandard APR score — would essentially be clear from facing similar penalties next year.

“That’s my understanding of it,” Broussard said. “We’ve not received any direct contact from the NCAA to verify that. The initial memo that received from them (before Thursday’s vote) indicated that the situation was as such — that essentially, the slate would be wiped clean.”

Broussard said he isn’t sure if the SU football team has a chance at a clean slate.

The football team had a multiyear score of 899 last season — one point shy of the NCAA’s original benchmark for avoiding severe penalties.

“It’s a possibility. … As I said, we haven’t received any official notification,” Broussard said. “But we’re hopeful that it would apply to both (teams).”

The SU men’s basketball team had a multiyear score of 852 last season, leading to the postseason ban — as well as a reduction in practice time and the subtraction of two scholarships.

The team had a perfect 1,000 score during the fall semester under first-year coach Roman Banks, and expects to have another high score at the end of the spring semester.

I thought our football team would have had a score of over 900 and JayRob STFU! It said multiple low resource schools and if it wasn't for CT governor opening his mouth, we would have had problems once again.

Nothing official for either school yet. I don't understand why the CL would even title their article like that.

I hope it turns out positive for all low-resource schools who were on the fringe, in terms of all securing a stolid plan for successful grad by the undergrad student-athletes.

Give yall thanks for what? The NCAA appointed a committee back in the fall to review this and they gave their recommendations that the NCAA approved. Didn't you see where Mighty Dog posted who was on the Education committee? Various folks outside of just the SWAC were responsible for this change. You know as I know, the NCAA wasn't trying to do us any favors especially if it was just ONE school leading the way as some have suggested.

JR, you dont have to be all ungrateful about us taking up for you all.

You know better than this BB. Surely you do. LOL. Heck, Stump was more vocal than Comegy was about this when we got banned. Folks said he was whining and to suck it up. You know dang on well, we got some help from some folks outside of just our schools to convince them NCAA mofos to make some changes.

Stump inherited SU's APR debacle whereas Comegy made his own bed. This is the reason Comegy had to keep his mouth shut. He was already skating on thin ice.

I know a lot of folks on this board told JSU folks to quit whining and take our medicine and not fight the penalties. I would call out some names but I don't think that's necessary just yet.:snicker: They know who they are.

I don't know of any other fanbase as vocal against the NCAA and it's unfair APR stipulations as were JSU folks. If there were, please enlighten us all.

Don't conflate being vocal with having an actual effect.

JR, our name was all over that document. We were their main targets. You all just got caught in the net. Our APR score wasn't the lowest, but they put us in their crosshairs. We bore the blunt of their force and fought back and won on behalf of all our HBCU brothers. You all can thank us later.

That dude and his comrades just have narcissistic problems. Everything isn't about JSU but they really think it is, those Mississippi mud puppies are hilarious.:dead::emlaugh:

NCAA: Notification of schools next week (UPDATE)

http://blogs.clarionledger.com/jsu/2012/04/27/jackson-state-ncaa-still-hasnt-confirmed/

NCAA: Notification of schools next week

The NCAA is expected to notify those schools that are affected by Thursday’s rule change next week, an NCAA spokesperson confirmed to The Clarion-Ledger today.

Jackson State says it has not received confirmation from the ruling body of college athletics about what was reported in today’s Clarion-Ledger — that JSU will have all penalties, stemming from low Academic Progress rate scores, waived.

“The formal notification of schools is expected to occur next week,â€￾ NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osburn wrote in an email today.

The Clarion-Ledger received confirmation, twice, from an NCAA spokesperson that the Tigers’ are free of penalties after the NCAA Board of Directors passed a measure Thursday to give relief to low-resource schools. JSU athletic director Vivian Fuller said two weeks ago that all penalties would be lifted if the proposal to change the rule was approved.

Also, The Clarion-Ledger obtained this letter from the NCAA to Jackson State informing the school that it would have penalties lifted if the proposal was passed.
