Week 1 Analysis.......how Would You Call It?

I can only speak for us (JACKSON STATE)

Saturday we faced a tough 1-A team. The score is one-sided, but it does not reflect the obvious progress JSU has made on the defensive side of the ball. The first half was OUTSTANDING for our Defense. You have to realize that most of the points scored by USM were off GREAT field position. Our Special Teams still have a lot of work to do and it is obvious. I can say, however, that dispite losing 55-7 our offense is ready. Now you can believe that......or not. We will see. Our guys actually played a good game. Did they play up to their potential? Probably not. I still hold my prediction. I think we will finish the season 9-2. Who the second loss will come against ???? i dunno.

While I did not attend the jsu-usm game I have been reading several of the posts regarding that matchup. It seems as though JSU has great talent but may have lacked the confidence on Saturday. While it is always tough to play at that level from what I hear USM merely capitalized on Jsu mistakes to gain the early lead. I still believe JSU will prevail in the eastern division and advance to the SWAC Championship.
On the other hand I know that the "ICON" has enough talent to win the SWAC west and the SCG. I do not believe that the G-Men played up to their fullest potential offensively. The defense played with desire and the old Grambling pride the ENTIRE game. The regular season matchup of the year should be the defense of the G-MEN aginst K'int. The Grambling offense showed signs of the notorious explosiveness but we must find consistency in the running game and the short passing game. The GSU special teams began the game with the big hit intensity but failed to capitalize. The Bottomline is that we must execute and gain the experience to know when it is crucial that we make plays.

We Run The SWAC
Well I can speak for SU. Our Defense was on point as always but the offense didn't give them any help. Now don't get me wrong the offense has the potential to be the best in the SWAC but we have to work on play calling. From what I saw Saturday we should have no problem winning the Swac Championship.

Meet, act & depart...
As you will see on another post, I listened to 5 games (that was great!). So, here is my input.
SU-this should be a very good year for us. We are loaded with offensive talent again this year with more options, more talent in key positions. Provided Richard's ankle isn't something that will impact him, we will be rollin'. Did you all see the total yardage. We moved the ball well. We just blew some key big play opportunity. Good or bad, the big plays I'm speaking of where not executed by key players that we expect to be our playmakers. It was week 1, so that shouldn't happen again, since they have been playmakers for us before. Defense was great. I expect that to get better and better.
GSU-looks like some solid talent is still there, in spite of losing 13 starters. How they are expected to repeat losing that much, is interesting, but the fact. They played with some real heart. After tasting championship blood, they don't quit any more. They fought until the game was over, so the game really wasn't over until it was actually over. They kept the heat on. That is good to see in a young team. The question is how fast will they grown up and begin to really play championhsip ball. I expect them to be in the thick of it all when it is all said and done.
JSU-don't know what they have, outside of that hella QB. They were out matched. But, these boys fought USM in spite of the mismatch. So, no one is going to run over them. Kent needs time to throw to his receivers so we can know what kind of passing game they'll have. I think the defense is going to be solid from what I heard Saturday. Special teams may be a question.
Alcorn & UAPB-I was surprised by the play of UAPB and confirmed about Alcorn. I think Alcorn's biggest issue is their coach. He has the talent. The coach has a way of messing things up. So, everyone that plays Alcorn best hope their coach doesn't pick them to coach a good game. It could be trouble for you. UAPB appears to be one of those dangerous teams. Good enough to beat everyone, but not good enough to win it all.
TxSU & PV-I tuned into this game late, so I'm not sure how TxSU put up most of their points. However, it looks good from the score. Looks like you better not be caught sleeping, because they are trying to score in Houston this year. PV appears to be those not as talented over achievers again. Take them light and you will be one of their less than a handful of victories this year.

I don't think the score reflects anything about the game at all. We struggled on our first 2 offensive possesions, 1 that ended in a poor special teams play that setup a USM touchdown. After those 2 possesions we started moving the ball just as we would against an HBCU team, getting into the red zone about 4 or 5 times. For the most part the players executed the plays as well as they could, but I think more playcalling killes us in the red zone. IT cost us at least 21 more points. And they did score on that 2nd drive. Following those poor first 2 drives, USM scored a TD and a FG. But on the drive ending in a field goal, the drive started in the JSU red zone. We held them to a field goal. And I believe we stopped them on 2 or 3 4th down tries. Special teams play is what killed us. If not for bad special teams play and a missed holding on the TD that put USM up by 3 TDs going into the half, the game probably would have gone much differently. It seem to me as if they played long enough to prove they could hang with USM then kinda gave out. If we improve the blocking on kick returns, punts, and running plays as well as better playcalling in the red zone, your prediction will stand.

Might I add that I think Kent threw 2 INTs, one which was a mistake by the WR, the other where it seemed Kent was told just to air it out and let his man fight for it. So, Kent did play an extremely good game. HE commanded the team, made some good reads, moved the ball, and played a good all-around game.

Seriously, USM has been one of the best defensive teams in the country for about a decade now.
A question for SU fans: What's the prognosis for Richard? He's a baller and caused a LOT of problems for the Wave on Sat. Hmmm... maybe that's why they knocked him out of the game...

Although the projected frontrunners suffered losses, there seems to be (from some of the post) some things to build on. At GSU, some personnel changes have been made to get better results. Time will tell if they are successful or long-term changes.
In each game, I feel that the coaching contributed to the defeat. In Lake Charles, our offensive staff did not do a good job of playcalling. We got too enamored with the long ball and it just wasn't happening. Perhaps too much was asked of Bruce in trying to go deep on every play. The offensive line performed poorly and the passing game was not there and the running game was abandoned. Also the delay of game and substitution penalties incurred means the coaches didn't do a good job.
In Jackson, the Tigers were outmanned! However, when JSU had opportunities to either score of make routine special team plays it just didn't execute. Apparently, the new defensive schemes didn't work out very well either. Maybe those things will be ironed out down the road.
In New Orleans, (I watched the play back) the jags played well enuff to be somewhat competitive. The only thing I noticed was a tendency to not convert on third down with the consistency needed. I question throwing the ball short of the first down marker (routes less than the required distance) with hopes that the receivers would break loose for the necessary yardage. Had plays been called or ran beyond the first down marker then maybe the score would have been a little different.
We all need to regroup from here and see what comes about in the upcoming weeks.

Richard is listed as day to day at this juncture. If he is not ready to go, Anthony Fisher will be the signal caller. Cooper is also listed as day to day. Port City Classic, here we come....Geaux Jags!!!!
