Bullisht!! Who ever heard of an upperclassman passing out? POPPYCOCK!!!! Besides, being hella hot builds character. Right JR? Where is my frat brother? He will most definitely clarify all this "hot" mess. When he gets back to Minneapolis, he is gonna post and stragihten out all this BLASPHEMY.

Jukes dont' get hot! Tell em' JR! Tell em'!!! Tell them fools bout 85!

+1 on this.

I love the look and tradition of "The S" and wore it proudly Back in the day but reality is reality.

With all of the emphasis on heatstroke these days (specifically among NFL players recently), Dr. J is correct in prioritizing the health of his students.

Considering that it was a day game in borderline dangerous heat/humidity, better to be safe than sorry.

Man, thats no excuse....They could've wore travel suits instead...those shorts looked country as he!!...and who is this Dr. J. yall are speaking of????

Yeah, what was up with the dayum shorts. Looked kinda country to me. Why do that on NATIONAL television? Was that part of the agreement? Dayum that was a major F-up on su's part. Short pants??

Did Delta State band wear shorts or did they band attend?

And, I don't think Jackson is willing to take the risk. Not like that...sitting on that side of the stadium. In fact, I don't think SU's side EVER got shade. So, as much as you and I might hate it...Jackson has females to think of now. He has parents to think of. He has kids to keep from passing out out there.

It sure looked like they didn't get any shade. We sat on FAMU's side, 'cause we didn't want to face with son, especially not with our 2-year-old son.

And I ain't mad at SU director for taking health into consideration. That was game was at the hottest time of the day.

A couple more points ...

I spoke to JR yesterday -- he didn't have a problem with it.

* For those who speak about what SU might have done "Back in the day" ...

As I understand it, the band does not practice outside as much as we used to. In my day, we practiced on the lot from 4-6 outside, every day. We'd come back and practice inside from 7-9:30 every day (In the NON air-conditioned bandroom). On Thursdays and Fridays before a game, we'd be outside from 7-8 and be in the bandroom from 8-10. I don't think the practice schedule is as rigorous these days. My guess was that we were better conditioned than the kids are these days.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not entirely convinced that what we did was better -- I would have preferred the additional personal time for study and having a life!

*For those who talk about FAMU and their heat situation Saturday ...

Do not forget that FAM marches in a one-piece top with a zipper front (I think). I know for a fact that the SU uniform is a jacket with a full overlay, complete with cape. Back in the day, the jacket was 100% wool -- I don't know what it's made of today. Bottom line, a SU uni is a whole lot of layers/fabric to be wearing in that heat/humidity.

I will reiterate -- I think Dr. J made the right call.

It has happened..................................

Yeah Birmingham medics where busy Saturday with all of the Heat exhausted people being carried out........

But it was a big difference at the Miles vs Tuskegee game at 6pm..................

Like I said before......
That turf DID NOT help with the heat problem.....
It only added to the misery,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

White bands play in the heat all the time, especially in hot azz Florida in their unis, so the heatstroke excuse ain't gone cut it bruh. Drinking lots of water will keep your body temperature normal.
That scene of su's band in short pants was embarassing. It took away from their show and it took away from their "su appearance".

su being in short pants on NATIONAL TELEVISION is good smack material for future reference though, ya hear that gramblin.:lmao::lmao:

Yeah -- and the majority of them march (walk?) Corps Style.

For the type of energy SU expends in a given show -- in that heat, I will maintain that the shorts were the right play.

After looking at the video, I can't see where it looks country or tacky. Maybe someone else sees something I don't see?

Yeah -- and when Grambling tries to "smack" on the shorts, I'll just tell them to listen to that sound at 00:37 and ask them to smack THAT.

Now what does the S on that chest mean?

Halftime only lasts 10 minutes or less. Not enough time to get a heatstroke if they're in shape, and are drinking lots of water. They could've taken off the tops once they got back to the stands like famu did.

On second thought, maybe the S stands for "sunstroke".

Jayrob, have you ever marched a SWAC halftime in the heat of the day in these uniforms? The only piece of the body exposed is the face. And you are physically putting everything in your body into performing. So you have added at least 10 degrees to the heat, then you are marching which is physical enough, plus blowing all the air OUT of your body and into a horn. It is physically exhausting in the heat. I'd like to see you explain to a parent why their child is in the hospital when options are available to prevent it.

IMO, it looked a bit odd with the hats, but it wasn't a bad look.

OK... The crowd gave FAMU more response. But, FAMU was on the home side. I think our fans allowed the heat to beat them down and being on the back side of the show cause the impact of the impressiveness to drop. We all know that you better be sho' nuff' smokin' to get FAMU fans to give any response to your band. So, if we didn't give it up for our band, it is our fault. It was a tight show. I wouldn't say it was a show that would leave no doubt, but it was very solid. The dolls look great and dance very well.

As for the uniform, it wasn't received well by most alums. That may have also impacted the response during halftime. You know how we are when we don't like something. We don't move forward in spite of not liking something. I'm willing to bet that if they had the pants on instead of the shorts, that it would have not been a huge issue.

FAMU also had a very solid show. There announcer reminded me of Roy Johnson in the 80's with his very opportunistic comments on the PA System. That helped get their crowd into the show just before they hit the field. I'm not for that getting on ground junk and the dancing the entire show. But, it was a solid show for FAMU.

Both bands sound very nice in the stands. The Jukebox is very solid. All 3 directors are breaking off some nice arrangements. FAMU did some crap that I just can't stand from these bands today. That playing while another band is playing simply for rudeness is not bandsmenship. If both bands are blowing ot support their team, that is totally different. This crap FAM did by starting to play what SU was playing about 8 counts behind them was SORRY! Those of us that enjoy listening to bands at the game would much rather hear you play the same song after your opponent finishes blowing. SMH... tacky tacky tacky. I recall muscians being more respectful of their craft than that. Somebody did that playing at the same time crap last year against SU. That isn't what it is all about!

Peace...

Peace...

A Band director would never have to explain any such to me, S phi S, because my kid wouldn't be out there in the heat. He'd be somewhere sitting on his ass plotting my death because I wouldn't let him go out there and show some damned old muhfuggas how "hard" he is, or make sure he looks "right" to some "fan" who couldn't blow a tuneful note outta his ass on a GREAT day.

In this day and age of heat being WAY different than it was when we were kids, and these kids STILL falling out dead DESPITE every precaution being taken to prevent it, I ain't mad at ANY band director who chose t-shirts and shorts over those hot azzed uniforms Saturday. I saw it all over television. Well, when my guests let me watch football.

Hell, Birmingham was hot in December. I know it was FLAMING Saturday.

Spoken like a true mother.

At first I agree with the decision with the shorts & the hat but as i sat in the stands on the vistors side i quickly understood why. It was hot as a you know what out there. People were leaving going to the other side because of the sun so it was a good decision. AS FAR AS THE PERFORMANCE it could have been better but he put everyone on the field. That we be taken care of this week. Twenty people will be cut off the field. Look for a better show in Chicago.

I don't usually post here, but I am gonna say, I was dissappointed not to see the Uniforms, but it was super damn hot, so I understand. In addition, we were facing the sun so that made it a lot worse than it was for FAMU.

As far as halftime. Southern was OK, not at there best but not bad.
Now FAMU, it depends on how you judge it. They got some crowd reaction, which is cool, but they did not have a "SHOW", so their is no contest here.

What do I mean, they marched out on the field with thier entrance, and did the rest of the show standing in the same damn spot. No drills, no routine, nothing. They stood in one spot, and played a few songs and started hopping around trying to dance, and never moved from that spot. I am sorry, that just is not a halftime show to me, It's like a greek show, and all they do is dance and never step. IMHO, at some point in a halftime show, a band has to do some type of drill, to get any respect from me. Now if you go out there and dance in one spot, I am not mad at you. And it may be entertaining, but you are also telling me your band director doesn't think you can do a drill correctly and doesn't want to be embarassed.

FAMU won the dance contest, but lost halftime

That's actually a good way of puting it. I was sitting next to FAMn's band....and, FAMn didn't get that much more crowd than SU did. Considering that WAS FAMn side...it was about even. Cuz, there were times SU got props during the show.

JayRob...if you were at the game....you'd know that SU's uniforms was the least of the 100's problems that day.

:)

i marched in the same kind of heat with the same full uni on. i have to go with the masses and say for national tv sake, unis should've been on. but honestly, i really don't care how hot it is, there should no excuses for not having it on. and i don't agree with takin off jackets either. what the hell is pre drill/band camp for nowadays? this is supposed to be the time to condition yourselves for that type of weather.

anyways, FAMU's band is the most unorganized group of folks i've ever seen. all that walking from band members and shat is so tacky. you need to piss before you get in the stadium, or hold that shat.

yall already know SU ripped em a new one from start to finish. halftime was a bit blah for me since i wasn't sitting high enough, and it was too hot to move, lol. they both had a good sound on the field though. dance routine for both were average.

5th, FAMU's song selection was uh mess. which made SU push their foot further up their ass.
