RICHMOND, Va. - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has accepted a plea deal ? and a likely prison sentence ? to avoid additional federal charges related to a professional dogfighting operation, one of Vick's attorneys said, the Virginian-Pilot reported Monday.

A press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET Monday, WXIA reported.

Vick will enter a guilty plea to the felony conspiracy charge next Monday at 10:30 a.m. ET, said Lawrence Woodward, one of Vick's defense attorneys, the Virginian-Pilot reported.

U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, who is presiding over the case, said he has the leeway to sentence Vick and his co-defendants as he deems fit and is not bound by the recommended sentences given to him by the prosecution, USA Today said.

CNN also said that Vick's attorneys are hoping to hear from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday about what options would be available to theAtlanta Falcons star quarterback if he does accept a plea deal.

A grand jury was scheduled to convene Monday in the federal court where Vick and three co-defendants were indicted on dogfighting charges last month.

There?s no indication whether the grand jury will take up further allegations against Vick, although federal prosecutors have said they plan to seek a superseding indictment in the case.

That would mean more charges against Vick, the lone defendant who has not been convicted now that all three of his co-defendants have reached plea deals.

Vick?s attorneys were negotiating with federal prosecutors last week, hoping to strike a deal on a plea agreement.

?It seems to be a pretty clear indication there will be some sort of plea entered,? Falcons owner Arthur Blank said Friday.

Vick?s last two co-defendants pleaded guilty Friday and said he bankrolled gambling on dogfights at Vick?s property in rural Surry County, not far from his hometown of Newport News. One said Vick helped drown or hang dogs that didn?t do well.

Quanis Phillips of Atlanta and Purnell Peace of Virginia Beach entered plea agreements and agreed to testify against Vick. Tony Taylor of Hampton struck a similar deal last month.

The gambling allegations alone could trigger a lifetime ban under the NFL?s personal conduct policy.

The NFL has barred Vick from the Falcons? training camp but has withheld further action while the league conducts its own investigation.

Peace, Phillips and Taylor pleaded guilty to the same charges facing Vick: conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

The offense is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Sentencings are set for November and December.

Billy Martin has probably gotten him a good deal that will not include gambling charges that would hinder his NFL career. Conspiracy will just mean he gave money to his boys and they did the rest. What will be interesting to see if Vick got a better deal than they did. Wouldn't it be something if the judge decides not to give Vick any jail time at all? I mean it is at the discretion of the judge.

I wouldn't bet anything on that happening.
The brotha is headed to the big house.

None of us are impervious to doing bad things (unlawful) but he shouldn've gone down this path at all regardless of his public stature.

What people get out of watching 2 dogs brutally harming each other is beyond my level of understanding. I TRIED to watch some of that silly mess when I was younger and felt back then like I do now. It's just stupid and uncalled for.

I thought that the state of Virginia would seek to press charges also, so is he out the water yet?

Re: Vick reportedly reaches plea agreement

Y'all think he'll play again after he gets out? Will any team even wanna touch him after all this?

Re: Vick reportedly reaches plea agreement

Yeah I think Vick will do jail time. If Martha Stewart did time, you know Vick will do time.

Never understood it either. But P we live in a barbaric society. Folks cheer 2 men and now women beating each other up in boxing and that UFC. So should be shocked that some folks like to see dogs and gamecocks fight.

I love dogs myself and never liked hearing about those dog fights. But I still marvel at how much this struck a nerve with our society when we have folks getting killed in an unpopular war, other athletes still getting cheered after being responsible for someone's death, and not to mention just plain ole folks killing each other every day for whatever reasons other than self-defense. It just shows me that we value human life less than we do other things. Vick should be punished but I think the maximum sentance of 5 years and 250k is too much over some dogs. There fools who kill people who get less than that. But hey it is what it is and he did it to himself. A tough lesson that he is about to learn.

....I dont know "P".

I never seen or been to a dogfight. I'm stuck on the, "they just dogs" tip, who cares ~shrugs~ I dont have any pets; if I did, mine would be treated well; but those who dont, it aint my business...I wouldn care; thats just how I am.

But anyway; I know everybody is happy now (except ATL fans) that Vick is gone. LOL bnr

I knew he was going down from jump. I wonder if he's going to have a cellmate. Does any know if this is considerd a white collar crime? Luckily for him, he gets to go to federal prison instead of state. His lawyer must have told him "we have no chance"

....if they do, they'll have'ta deal with the public out cry again.

PETA would definately be back protesting, boycotting, the whole nine.

I've been to "po men" dog fights. Very exciting and it's a norm from where I'm from. Everybody on my street had "fighting" pits, so honestly I dont see anything wrong with fighting them. But hey, that's just my opinion. I had a "fighting" parrot once too.

Good post. Also look at how we slaughter other animals with no problems. I was listening to the sports reporters on yesterday and one guy said the reason people are upset is because those dogs didn't have a choice in the matter. I wish I could have called in to ask him if all those pigs, cows, deers, chickens, turkeys, and all the other animals had choices.

Re: Vick reportedly reaches plea agreement

Well, we live in a society that LOVES DOGS. I can sit on my front porch and between the hours of 5PM and 9PM, every other person walking the neighborhood will have a dog with them. Dogs are the primary pet of American society, so fighting dogs is going to be viewed as cruel and unusual punishment in the eyes of most Americans because Americans simply love dogs.

I HATE dogs. I tried to be a dog owner and now that I look back on it, I hated owning dogs. However, I would never want to see my dog fight. Not that its cruel, I just don't see the purpose.

I think people can raise and train pitbulls without fighting them. Mike just got caught.

Oh well....
