Coco Gauff saves match points to reach the 2026 US Open semifinals​



Absolutely clutch. In a battle between the two most recent French Open champions, home favorite Coco Gauff overcame a shaky start and saved two match points to defeat Mirra Andreeva, 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 and advance to the semifinals of the US Open for the second time in her career.

“I think I just had to reset,” Gauff said after the match. “I came out not feeling the ball, giving her too many free points, and Mirra was playing a great level…I was thinking about Frances Tiafoe and how he came back yesterday. We all want to do well in front of this crowd. Honestly, I was trying to literally leave the court with no regrets.”

The cheers swelled from Arthur Ashe Stadium as Taylor Townsend approached the microphone on court. “Y’all know this is my moment,” she started, “and I’m about to take it.”

A day after being denied an American rooting interest in the women’s singles final and rushing for the exits in response, the Ashe crowd had reason to stick around and drink in the moment: the Chicago native and her partner, Kateřina Siniaková of the Czech Republic, had just defeated the all-American team of Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 in Friday’s women’s doubles final. With the victory, Siniaková became a two-time career doubles slam champion while Townsend joined the club for the first time.

The moment was long in coming for the 30-year-old Townsend, a top-ranked junior player who was body-shamed by her home federation and denied coaching and funding as consequence. Last year, Townsend and Siniaková blitzed through the draw before getting blitzed back by Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe, pushing her US Open victory celebration back a year. Though clearly disappointed, Townsend maintained a sunny disposition and vowed that she and Siniaková would finish the job. That they did in a year when the US Open showcased the depth of Black American players in tennis wasn’t lost on Townsend – who now has an adult US Open trophy to go with the one she won as a 16-year-old.

Townsend & Siniakova complete career Slam in New York​

Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend won the women's doubles at the US Open to complete a historic career doubles Grand Slam as a pairing.

The top seeds came from a set down to beat American wildcards Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5-7 6-0 6-2 in New York.

Their triumph at Flushing Meadows means they have now won all four Grand Slam titles, adding to their triumphs at Wimbledon in 2024, the Australian Open in 2025 and this year's French Open.

It was Czech player Siniakova's 12th Grand Slam doubles title in total, while she also became the first player to complete the career Slam with two different partners.

The 30-year-old achieved it previously with fellow Czech Barbora Krejcikova.

For American Townsend, who is also 30, victory marks her first US Open doubles title after suffering defeat in the final last year alongside Siniakova to Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe.

Townsend said the fact that the final included two black women was a source of 'pride' for her.

"This is a phenomenal time for tennis, for inspiration, for representation. It's just getting started," said Townsend.
 

Rybakina defeats two-time defending champion Sabalenka to win 2026 US Open​


Elena Rybakina defeated two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka at the 2026 US Open, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. During her run to the title—her first at a US Open—Rybakina also racked up enough points to rise to world No. 1 when the rankings are updated on Monday.

WHAT HAPPENED

No. 2 seed Rybakina has played the role of Sabalenka’s spoiler this Flushing fortnight.

In capturing the crown here, she not only prevented Sabalenka from “three-peating” at consecutive US Opens. But when Rybakina ascends to world No. 1 on Monday, she’ll be wresting the top spot from Sabalenka, who’s had the number one next to her name for 99 consecutive weeks.

It’s the stuff rivalries are made of.

Sabalenka owns the edge in their head-to-head, 10-7. But at the end of 2025, Rybakina beat Sabalenka in the WTA finals in Riyadh and a couple of months later, she won her second Grand Slam title, defeating Sabalenka in the final of the 2026 Australian Open. Then Sabalenka grabbed back-to-back titles in Indian Wells and Miami, after taking out Rybakina in the finals and semifinals, respectively.
 

Alexander Zverev defeats Ben Shelton to win 2026 US Open​


WHAT HAPPENED

Alexander Zverev captured his second Grand Slam title—and second major of the year—by defeating American Ben Shelton in the 2026 US Open men's singles final, 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2, on Sunday.

“We went 30 years without winning a Grand Slam and now we won two in the span of three months,” the 29-year-old said to his team during the post-match ceremony. “I think God has seen how hard we worked, how much we suffered, how much pain we went through, and I think 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before.”

Shelton was vying to become the first American man to win a major since Andy Roddick achieved the feat in Flushing Meadows 23 years ago. But he could not overcome the No. 1 seed, who lifted his maiden Slam trophy at Roland Garros this spring and whose big-match experience ultimately carried him over the line in this contest.

Their previous battles decisively favored Zverev coming into the final. The German possessed a 5-0 advantage against the American, and in all those prior encounters, Shelton had only managed to claim one set, in their first-ever meeting in 2024. Zverev was also 44-1 against left-handers since the French Open in 2023, as he generally favors the forehand-to-backhand exchanges the matchup produces.
 
This year I saw the best run at a major by American Men in many years. I hope that one of them will win a major next year.

I think an American woman will win a major next year.

On to 2027 and the Australian Open!

Martina Navratilova liked what Ben Shelton said after losing US Open final​


Martina Navratilova has reacted positively to something Ben Shelton said after the American lost his first Grand Slam final to Alexander Zverev at the US Open.

Shelton was obviously disappointed after falling short in New York, but one part of his runner-up speech received attention from the 18-time Grand Slam champion. Navratilova liked the way the American spoke about failure and treated it as part of the process, rather than only something negative.

“My successes are a gift, the failures are a gift, and being here playing in front of you guys is a gift,” Shelton said during the trophy ceremony.

Navratilova liked his words.

“Do you know what I loved the most about him? His reaction at the trophy ceremony,” said Navratilova. “He was shooting daggers at the trophy. He said ‘I am going to win this thing one day’. He was really ticked off that he didn’t win. He is going to be back.”

The young tennis player has impressed many people, not only Navratilova, but also tennis experts. They have been delighted with his dedication, motivation and passion for tennis.

The 23-year-old had a chance to end a very long wait for American men's tennis, but Zverev was better in the final and won 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2. The German took his second Grand Slam title of the season after also winning Roland Garros in June.

Shelton still managed to take the third set after being two sets behind. However, Zverev broke early in the fourth and kept that advantage until the end.

The American also used his speech to congratulate the 29-year-old German, who has now changed quite a lot about his Grand Slam career in only a few months.
