UH-OH: BILLIPS coaching basketball at a school with resources.

GOAT FARM!
Expect to see a lot of players suddenly transfer into that program. I knew he would not be out of coaching in this state long when JPS said all coaches must be full time teachers also. He got a lot of talent in South Mississippi. Won't be long before he start to tap into it and pull it together.

He had resources and talent at Lanier. There's no better place to coach in the state than in the metro area. I think he'll do well but good luck breaking through the JPS logjam to win state.

They still going to get their arses kicked by the JPS schools. We run basketball in the State.

He better realize quickly that Hattiesburg ain't Jackson.

And yes, I know Oak Grove High and Hattiesburg High are two separate high schools.

If the Mississippi SWAC was smart, we would recruit more from the Pine Belt area high schools but what do I know.

Yep............But nowhere near as much as OAK GROVE got.
These Metro schools can't match the resources these big county schools have. Look at the difference in Madison Central and Jackson Metro schools in terms of resources and facilities. Too many schools taking a bite out of the same pie in Jackson. That's all I'm saying..........Nothing negative about Lanier because those alums/students/ and neighborhood support the heck out of Lanier.

Lanier and Jackson supported him but those mofo's are gonna throw stuff at the basketball program like they do the football program down there now.

Oak Grove may have the resources, but do they have the talent? Can he get talent? Oak Grove doesn't have a strong basketball tradition.

Meridian has shown people what a good coach can do with a good coach. Madison Central just got their coach a couple years ago and he is starting to pull that talent up there into one place. They all still got to get past JPS like you said though. ANY state basketball championship is gonna have to go through JPS no doubt.

Oak Grove is where the rich county folks send their kids. Brett Farve is an assistant coach at OG. Oh and Billups, that screaming and showing out...white folks put up with that to a certain point.

Tony Hughes (an assistant coach at MS State and considered one of the greatest recruiters in state) had a son who played there. And of course Steve McNair, Jr. Played WR there.

Yep.
That's why I said look for "pookie, opie, and nim" to start moving in with Uncle Leroy and Aunt Clare so they can go to school there. Don't think they will bother him over a little "yelling." You know how them country folks are. They will just tell their kid to "suck it up and walk it off."

If Mississippi is anything like Louisiana or Texas, he will get kids there. Yall will wonder where he found all those kids. LOL

Hold up, you don't have to be a certified teacher to be a head coach in Mississippi? Some please clarify the requirements for me.

I know here, you you have to be a certified teacher to be a head coach, but a lot of times they'll make a head coach "Dean of Students/Discipline" or something to keep him/her out of the classroom.
However, you don't have to be a certified teacher to be an assistant.

Hattiesburg is a different animal though. Middle Class and low class blacks send their kids to Hattiesburg High. Rich county folks send their kids to Oak Grove. Hattiesburg High has always underachieved though. With the talent they have, they should be competing for championships in every sport.

Then you have to throw in Petal, Forrest County AHS, etc. Billups can get players but must pick his spots carefully. Hattiesburg and Oak Grove REALLY, REALLY, don't like each other.

The SWAC has always under-recruited the Pine Belt for some reason :smh:.

Billips was "retired" as a teacher but he continued to coach basketball.
I think he was considered a "part-time" faculty member. The new JPS Superintendant basically did away with that loop-hole. You still have to be certified to be a teacher. A lot of school districts used to allow this when it came to sports. JPS was one of the last school districts that continued to allow this. A few still do. He still had to "put in his 8 hours a day" though.

Hint: Head Football Coach + Athletic Director = Don't have to be in the classroom.

So basically, it's Central Office shenanigans. I would've thought given Billups' track record, the principal would've just moved him into a "Dean of Students/Dean of Discipline" type position like they do a lot of football coaches here in Louisiana. Thanks for clarifying it for me Jstate83.

Also, Braveheart, I know coaches who are the school's AD, but that person is NOT the head football coach. Conversely, I knew head coaches that taught core courses as well as coaches who had that "Dean of Students/Discipline" position and just kicked it all day. In essence, what that coach does depends on (1) what the principal at that particular school would allow and (2) what the system's central office would allow.

You talk in circles.. in a roundabout way, you said there is no talent in Hattiesburg.. they you say we should recruit that area. :smh:

I said Pine-Belt Area TP.... If I just said Hattiesburg, most people would think Hattiesburg Tigers (purple and gold) NOT Oak Grove Warriors (black and gold).

The Pine Belt Area includes those two as well as Petal (I saw them play their first game in their new stadium vs.South Panola. Puts the SWAC to damn near shame), Forrest County AHS, etc.

Hattiesburg High has always underachieved while Oak Grove High has always been Overhyped (Snow Game in Jackson vs. South Panola. Talk about a cold night to be a Warrior :lmao:.

He also says Oak Grove is rich. Oak Grove is predominately middle class whites and blacks. The few "rich" folks send their kids to Presbyterian Christian School and very few of them are truly rich.

If SWAC schools were to recruit the Pine Belt, they should recruit in football and baseball. Basketball is not hot in the area unless Billups turns it around.

Thats my main man Coach Billups. Has always been on of my favorite teachers/coaches/persons growing up. I wish he would have gotten a break on the college level, especially at JSU, but we are hell bent on hiring people who never had anything to do with the school or even rooted against the school for years. Do your thing CoachBillups....he has always been a winner and this tenure will be no different.

Maybe BrettFavre will help him out some.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST DAMN MISTAKES THESE DUMB MOFOS IN JACKSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE EVER DONE IN LETTING BILLUPS GET AWAY!! SMMFH!! MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL!!!

It is like that in Vicksburg. Oh you teaching a class if you want to coach. At Warren Central, they usually taught the easiest classes. (Drivers Ed., MS Studies, U.S. Government., or Health eduation).

Big first step forward. Can't expect Billups to perform miracles immediately, but you best believe the what talent is in that area, they will be recruited hard to Oak Grove. And I refuse to believe that as athletic as that football team is, you can't find 12-15 kids that can ball.
