Has it proven untrue since you said it? No? Still untested...except for that notre dame thing and BYU thing ? Aside from that what since does it make that we have all these hbcus and not one is fbs while their schools & the nfl are filled with the best black athletes? Lastly if troy, usm, ul monroe can be fbs why not su, bama state, jsu, or famu?

Not sure if serious. First of all you aren't going to get a conference invite. Secondly, you won't be able to maintain the budget without raising the hell out of student fees. And being an independent isn't an option for FBS move ups anymore so... not gonna happen.

That's not what we're saying...

USM has a 9.4 million deficit and has to play million dollar beat downs to pay old coaches....We cannot go into those kind of deficits. We let the time pass and we now have to just be FCS and root against each other. Similar to D2 and D3...Just for the love of the game and our rivalries.... Look at these other schools in massive athlectic debt...

You have to look at what this article is calling a "deficit" (subsidies). It is pretty much the same for all of us too. If the same definition is used for us, we all (every FCS school) have deficits also.

Except if you move to FBS you'll basically have to double that, which most... or pretty much none will be able to do. On top of that, you now have to get your students to vote on doubling their athletics fees while explaining to them that it's being done to no longer play Alcorn, Bama State, Grambling, etc... so that we can now play USA, Troy and ULM. Good luck with that one.

FBS can seem like a siren song for some types of schools - the opportunity to think of themselves as "big-time", playing in bowl games, and getting on ESPN, even if it's on a Tuesday.

But the sad reality is the idea that being "big-time" in the world of non-BCS FBS football is really still just a myth.

The bowl games will almost certainly involve the GoDaddy.Com Bowl instead of the Fiesta Bowl, the ESPN games are almost always on Tuesday night, not Saturday nights, and you end up opening up a spending arms race that doesn't really result in the type money that you're hoping to generate for your program.

It would be refreshing for a school to just admit this upfront - that being in the world of non-BCS FBS football will cost millions more dollars for the right to pretend that they're the same as Notre Dame, Michigan and Stanford on weekends in the fall - when their games actually fall on weekends rather than weekdays, of course.

But as countless others before them have done, they sell the move as one that will make more money for the school and give them "exposure" - a move with all upside, and no downside, as if there are no costs to such a move.

It's the Big Lie that refuses to die.

The truth is that schools end up paying more - a lot more - for the privilege of pretending to be Alabama.

And the so-called financial benefits? In the world of non-BCS FBS, well, they're still waiting to see them.

I'm not disagreeing with that. I'm just saying we are CURRENTLY in no better position than they are, even at the FCS level. There are only a handfull of college athletics programs at any level that don't have a subsidy "deficit" and ALL of them are in power conferences.

Heck Bama State has $12M in subsidies now.
 
My question is how many of those kids are going to transfer to Alabama St. or A&M........

There's gotta be some hidden gems there.....

Georgia State will be fine once a good football coach comes into the picture though. Prime location, and currently in talks to get the property Turner Field is on once the Braves leave. Biggest mistake there was hiring a dinosaur like Bill Curry that was out of touch with the current state of football and he pretty much wrecked the program before it even got started. With that said, GSU has 33K students. Also just got the AD from App State so I don't expect that situation to be the same for long.

Thing is, bama state is not breaking any attendance records in the swac right now. The JSU game was the best attended home game w/ just over 17k. SU didn't draw well last year, and neither did Grambling. In fact Jax State drew over 20k in a huge thunderstorm. So if they aren't drawing well now, changing conferences isn't going to hurt that. They would have much better attendance playing Troy, & South Alabama than nearly evey school in the swac (obviously not talking bout a&m). mix in the ocassional big school they could get to visit (south alabama hosted mississippi state this year, troy hosted duke?) then the scheduling isn't as bad as some of us want to make it out to be. after all, bama state would still play a&m in birmingham every year, and if they want to play SU or JSU they could pay them the standard 250 to 350k to play a road game against a fbs squad. also keep in mind, whatever conference they'd move to fbs or fcs would be a better athletic conferece in every way w/ the possible exception of baseball.
