Any Golden Lion fans reading this board? We'd like to invite you over to our place for some friendly smack talk and game discussion. We're a small board with passionate and knowledgeable Horned Frog faithful who enjoy learning more about our opponents. Here's the link for the game thread we've got going.

If anyone here is planning on traveling to Fort Worth for the game, we have an area on our board devoted to the gameday experience, what to do in the area, where to stay, eat, etc. If there are specific questions not covered, please feel free to ask in the welcome thread here.

I know fans of both teams are looking for bounce back years. This game will be a great way to start things off.

Hello @purpledawgtcu and welcome to the HBCU Sports Forum! I’m 96lioness (Stephanie).

I’m not a fan of UAPB.... I am a proud 1996 alumna of THE University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and I’m a RIDE-OR-DIE BLACK&GOLDEN Lion! I also love and support the SWAC and HBCUs.

We (UAPB/AM&N/Branch Normal) became a member of the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) in 1936 and were until 1970 (joined NAIA). We came back home to the SWAC in 1997 and are currently to date. Since the inception of the SCG (SWAC Championship Game), we’ve held the Western Division Championship twice 2006 and 2012), and have 1 SWAC Championship (2012). Our basketball team won the overall SWAC Tournament and were the 2010 Basketball Champions, but low APR and non-compliance with NCAA eligibility resulted in stripping of that title. Coincidentally, our women’s soccer team also won that year, and advanced to the NCAA tourney. Our baseball team boasted in claiming the 2013 COTY and POTY, and were also the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Western Divisional Champions. We’ve had success in our Track & Field area (most recently 2018 Men’s Cross Country). UAPB athletics boasts a department of I believe 14 sports (football, baseball, men’s basketball, men’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s T&F, men’s cross country, women’s basketball, women’s T&F, women’s cross country, women’s tennis, softball, women’s soccer, and volleyball).

Our football team has been struggling since our last championship 7 years ago, and unfortunately has landed at the bottom of our division, and second-to-last overall conference. While we’ve suffered from devastating defeats from all 9 conference opponents, we were totally humiliated & utterly annihilated by SDSU last season, horse-kicked 90-6! But we take our losses and move on to the next game.

We’re hoping 2019 will be better for us and are anxious to get into action. Our HFC Cedric Thomas (also an alumnus of UAPB) is going into his 2nd year with the hopes of changing the mindset of our team from that of a willing participant to champion! My boys (as I affectionately refer to the Golden Lions) have surprised our conference a few times over the years and are ready to do so again.

Our 1st matchup this season is against your Horned Frogs, but as Coach Thomas stated, the “measuring stick” of our athleticism stance will be against a SWAC school, our Eastern Divisional opponent, Alabama A&M University!
 



Oh yeah...

I travel/follow my boys, and have been to every SWAC campus/stadium (except Alabama State University). I’ve been to McNeese, SIU, Arkansas State (Jonesboro, AR), Henderson State (Arkadelphia, AR), and attended our games at Edward O. Jones Dome (St. Louis). I’ve been following my folks since 1989, one year BEFORE I came to UAPB.
I love my school. Everything about it. Our teams, our band, our choir, our alumni, our history and our pride. I don’t like to smack, but I also don’t take smack behind UAPB. So, if you’d like to smack my boys, you can on THIS forum (the Smack Board). I tend to visit there from time-to-time. Just say something, anything about UAPB, and you’ll get a good chance to know 96lioness!😎😉
 
Ummmm... GSUers, can you shed more light on the exposure of fatteth the turkey beforeth the slaughtereth? The meaning of friendly-unfriendly? Lawd... :(
 
TCU is a Christian school...that said, alot of those fake arguments around these parts about Texas football being somehow not what it's hyped ain't gonna help dem mean ole lions. I offer thoughts and prayers. Give em...whatever you GOT UAPB. Have your O-line in that weight room now, if you know what's good for ya.

Hello again @purpledawgtcu

I will not be in attendance of my team's season opener. My older sister will be out-of-town that weekend, so I will go over to stay with our mother, who is battling cancer. Also, that is my weekend to work my 3rd shift TOD and I did not schedule to be off.

We have a fairly nice-sized alumni chapter in the DFW area, and when our Golden Lions are in the area, they come out and support, so I'm sure they'll be in attendance. Also, we have a pretty-good sized Houston alumni chapter who will sometimes team with the DFW chapter and provide a hospitality suite/room for our team, so I'm sure they'll make the trip to see our team. Additionally, the charter bus service that I use will have alumni and supporters coming in and will stay in town overnight; and then lastly the faithful ones traveling in their personal vehicles.

I'm not sure if M4 will be in attendance. That's the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Band, the Marching Musical Machine of the Midsouth; since I've been affiliated with UAPB (as a student and an alumna), they usually travel, especially if it's a pretty short distance, but again, I don't know if they'll be there August 31st. I hope so because our team needs all the support they can get.

So, yes, there will be some Golden Lions at Amon G. Carter the last Saturday of this month, ready to cheer and support our boys, in full compliance of the clear bag policy! It may be a small number, but those are the faithful few, the ride-or-die, Black-n-Gold-til-death, Golden-Lions-luvin' loyal ones, those that truly have the heart of a LION!

They're trying, they really are. I know they had their conditioning test last week, and I remember Coach Thomas saying he'd have them in the weight-room as much as he could.

They were out in the rain for a scrimmage earlier this morining:

@96lioness Thank you so much for your replies to my post! I see you are an ardent supporter of your proud Golden Lions and I salute your steadfast loyalty. You are the type of fan the members of my board are eager to engage with. We enjoy learning more about the OOC programs our team faces and comparing strengths and challenges prior to game day. It's especially fun in the run-up to the season opener since we're all so eager for it to get started.

You mentioned other groups who might be coming to Fort Worth for the game. If possible, could you please share the links in my original post with those groups via social media as appropriate? We'd like to get our gameday information out to as many people as possible. I appreciate the assist!

Someone upthread mentioned our fan base in comparison to the SEC and I simply say, "Them's fightin' words, pardner!" 🤠 Come over to our place, introduce yourself, and interact with us before calling us lame. You'll find we're a very engaged group of friendly, knowledgeable football fans.
