Tyler Perry is set to star in an adaptation of the James Patterson novel I, Alex Cross to be directed by Rob Cohen which is planned as a trilogy. The film will serve as a reboot of the mystery series that starred Morgan Freeman as the detective/psychologist based in D.C.

The project is close to getting a distribution deal. It will likely be grabbed up by Paramount, the distributor of Kiss the Girls and Along Came A Spider. Perry has a great relationship with Lionsgate, so they may be interested. steps up, especially since the studio collects a distribution fee on pictures that Perry owns.

I don't know if anyone keeps up with it but this is in a series of books....all of which I have read. I personally believe Will Smith and his children should have been playing the roles from the beginning. For the powers that be to skip previous versions really bothered me. With the right script there could have a been a movie yearly about Alex Cross.....

Well the original guy slated to play it was Edris (I have just forgotten his name but he plays Luther on the BBC series Luther) and got replaced by Tyler.

From my understanding the writer of the book was very happy with Tyler in some of the footage that he saw of the film. Lionsgate will probably get it.

Kinda off topic...but the books lost a lot of steam after "Roses are Red" and "Violets are blue". The next couple of books were REALLY bad.

Actually to me I loved them....I think what should have happend was that they should have located an actor to do a movie for all of the books.

Alex Cross

Saw it last night. Decent movie overall, but Tyler Perry's limited acting skills were really on display. This role is really not suited for him and it showed tremendously. I commend him for taking on this role though and hopefully he will continue to polish his skills.

I have not seen it, but based on the reviews I have read (yours included) it seems that movie (based on a series of books) has potential, but that TP may not be the right fit for the role.

I think the book series is called Alex Cross. I saw the movie Kiss the Girls and I loved Morgan Freeman in that movie. Then I saw Along Came a Spider, and I loved him in that one, too. When I found out his character, Alex Cross, had a series of books, I started reading the book Along Came a Spider but never finished it (I'd seen the movie).

Haven't seen the movie with TP in it, but when I found out he'd be basically filling in the role played by stellar actor Morgan Freeman, I could only hope TP would/could do the character justice. Morgan Freeman was awesome as Alex Cross!

The only two actors that could come close to topping or even matching Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross are Will Smith and Denzel Washington. Morgan set the bar real high and TP was completely out of his league with this one. But once again, I commend him for taking this risk and trying to expand his skills.

Re: Alex Cross

I heard that Idris guy was one of the actors considered for that role.

Idris is a pretty good actor, but I don't know if he could have pulled off Alex Cross. He was great in the 'The Wire'. I didn't like his character in 'Daddy's Little Girls'. His character was just too damn weak for me.

I loved Morgan Freeman in Lean on Me, but I absolutely fell in love with him in Glory! Ever since, I've been a fan of his (despite the step-granddaughter thing). When I saw him in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, I figured more movies from the Alex Cross book series would surface with him as the title character. Even in those 2 movies alone, he did an excellent job in taking ownership of Alex Cross.

Again, I haven't seen Tyler Perry as Alex Cross, but I'm so sold on the character played by Morgan Freeman.......hope Tyler Perry did great as the character.

Re: Alex Cross

I saw it last night...yes, they needed another actor...but they need an unknown...Idris, Denzel and Will both too overexposed...

Eaxactly...

I think the movie would have made more money at the box office if I had starred in it! :emlaugh:

Re: Alex Cross

I am glad it bombed. Wtf were they thinking casting Tyler Perry.

They were thinking of getting his fans to see it. This was one of those get whoever is popular among a certain race case. See Bow Wow in Lotttery Ticket, Kim Kardashian in Married Counselor, any Madonna movie and so on.

Also they already Greenlighted a sequel.

Most complaints towards the film are not aimed at Tyler but the watering down of the script and the director. Most people praised Tyler for trying, however this would have worked better with someone who did not have a fan base like his.

Idris dropped out of the film for the record. I think most of the actors many of us would think could do the role were not available at the time of filming.

Please tell me they are not bring back TP.

Re: Alex Cross

From the clips I've seen this looks like a Samuel L. Jackson role. The only lead role Tyler should play is Madea, and I'm sick of that big b!+ch.

Re: Alex Cross

LOL @ the reviews it got

Rafer Guzman of Newsday: "It feels almost cruel to laugh at such a blindly stumbling, dunderheaded action-thriller, but you won't be able to help it."

Mick LaSalle of San Francisco Chronicle: "'Alex Cross' is a good example of what a seriously talented director can do with a heaping pile of garbage."

Wesley Morris of The Boston Globe: "If I hadn't had to stay awake, I would have slept though the whole thing. At home."

Glenn Kenny of MSN Movies: "Somebody got it wrong. A lot of people got it wrong. And the result is one of the most ridiculous, laughable and dim-bulbed serial killer thrillers in recent memory or ever. Seriously, people, this movie is to 'Silence of the Lambs' as 'I Am Number Four' is to 'E.T.'"

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times: "The direction by Rob Cohen is so careless that the film's climax is set up by a car crash that, if I am not mistaken, is completely coincidental."

Claudia Puig of USA Today: "Tyler Perry should not give up his day job. At least not until he chooses better dramatic vehicles for branching out."

Manohla Dargis of The New York Times: "A grim, dispiritingly stupid waste of time, energy, money and talent, directed by Rob Cohen, this is the first installment in what one of its producers warned Entertainment Weekly would be 'the new Tyler Perry franchise, a worldwide one.'"

I don't give much stock to critics, most get it wrong when it comes to films with black actors in a major role.

I even heard about one critic who never read any books by the Alex Cross author, but basically said this was one of the worst movies he's seen this year. :shame::shame:

Critics are supposed to be able to judge movies across the board...with the same criteria. They shouldn't have to use a different criteria to judge Black films/actors but then we turn around and say, "take our movies seriously".

The same thing happened when Madea movies first came out. Everyone jumped on Roger Ebert, called that man racist...b/c he said the Madea movie sucked. But it did. it wasn't a "real" movie and should not have been given a good rating/review. But black folks told him he didn't understand the whole "Big Mama" idea in Black families. :emlaugh: :smh:

It's an "Alex Cross" movie that should be judged the same way the other "Alex Cross" movies were judged (with Morgan Freeman). :noidea:
