JSU's Joyce burns Texas Southern

Junior transfer hits career-high 32 points in 80-63 upset

The top two scorers in the Southwestern Athletic Conference were on display Saturday night at the Athletics and Assembly Center.

It was another player, Ishmael Joyce, who stole the show, however.

Joyce poured in a career-high 32 points, 21 in the first half, as Jackson State surprisingly ambushed league-leading Texas Southern 80-63.

"I felt it tonight," said Joyce, an Illinois State transfer who came in averaging nearly 14 points per game in his first season at JSU. "When you're feeling it like that, you just keep shooting it and try to stay in that rhythm. You want to ride that wave as long as you can because it only comes so often."

JSU won its second straight to improve to 6-15 overall and 5-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Texas Southern, which had won eight straight and 11 of its last 12, dropped to 13-7 and 9-2.

Game's most glaring stat

Jackson State shot a season-best 58.8 percent from the field, 61.5 percent in the first half. That total included 44 percent shooting (11 of 25) from 3-point territory. Six of those treys were made by Ishmael Joyce.

A month ago in Houston, JSU led Texas Southern by 14 points in the first half yet was outscored 55-26 the rest of the way and lost 65-50. The Tigers once again jumped to an early lead, but this time there was no relinquishing it.

JSU led by as many as 20 points in the first half and 24 in the second in cruising to by far its biggest SWAC win of the season. Cliff Walker added 20 points and K.C. Cavette 11 for the Tigers, who shot 58.8 percent ? 61.5 in the first half.

"I'm not surprised; I knew we could play with them," JSU coach Andy Stoglin said. "From a physical standpoint we can play with anybody in this league. It's just a matter of us playing smart and hitting some shots."

Texas Southern's Ra'Kim Hollis, the SWAC's leading scorer (19.4 ppg.), finished with 19 points. He was 0-7 from the field and had just two points in the first half, though, as JSU raced to a 45-20 halftime lead.

JSU's Tim Henderson, the SWAC's second-leading scorer (18.5 ppg.), was plagued by foul trouble throughout and finished with just eight points ? his second lowest point total of the season.

With Hollis off and Henderson on the bench saddled with two fouls in the first half, Joyce went to work. The 6-foot-3 junior guard drained five 3-pointers in the first half, single-handedly outscoring Texas Southern 21-18 in the game's first 15 minutes.

"Ish got on fire early," Walker said.

Joyce, whose previous career-high was 27 at Prairie View, added 11 points in the second half to match his jersey number.

"We did everything we could possibly do to defend him, we just couldn't get it done," Texas Southern coach Ronnie Courtney said.

JSU mixed defenses effectively, keeping Texas Southern out-of-sync for most of the game. The visiting Tigers did make a late push, closing the gap to 11, 74-63, with just over three minutes remaining. But they could draw no closer.

Only Wisconsin, which currently leads the Big 10, has beaten Texas Southern more convincingly this season.

"We came down here and got a real good whipping," Courtney said. "Jackson State came ready to play and we didn't. We didn't accept the challenge at all. Anytime you're as athletic as they are and can shoot it like they shot it tonight, you can beat folks. If you don't match that shooting, you're going to get run out, and that's what happened to us tonight."

JSU had lost six straight ? five by a combined 13 points ? before its recent two-game winning streak. The Tigers will try to make it three in a row Monday night when Prairie View comes to town. The Panthers are now tied for first with Texas Southern following a 74-61 win at Grambling Saturday.

"We lost a lot of close games," Walker said. "If we get those 13 points, we could be in first place. If we get our minds right, we can be a scary team."

Freshman forward Edrick Montgomery, making his JSU debut, had two points and four rebounds in 10 minutes. "He makes us a better team," Stoglin said.

Basketball smack is totally in order during basketball season. lol.

This is why I said a long time ago that the tourney is gonna be really interesting. Any one of the teams in this conference can beat any one team on any given night. lol. It's gonna be hell for yall coming to Jackson though. We don't lose at home. The only home loss came against Valley by 2. When you look at our SWAC losses most of them were by less than 3 points. But then that's the case for most schools. That's why this thing is gonna be tight.

*rubbin my hands togetha @ pvu, grambling, asu, alabama a&m all coming to jackson soon*
