TxSou and UAPB be careful

JSU/99

I know someone from JSU is probably the last poster who should give advice on searching for a new coach. But here I am after a few weeks of hibernation. Even though this is the most stressful time of the year for me, I wouldn't be a Christian if I didn't pass along this advice.

1) Be nice to the outgoing coach. This might not be a problem for you guys since both of your coaches resigned. But whatever you do, don't piss off the outgoing coach. Even if the coach was the biggest idiot this side of the Mississppi, you must remember that he recruited most of the players the new guy will be coaching next year. And the players will still feel a measure loyalty to him. Trust me, you don't want a loose cannon ex-coach hanging around practices, dividing the loyalties of already confused players. That's a recipe for disaster.

2) Be aware of the administration favorites. Why? Because he's probably going to be the new coach. Now you can fight all you want, but remember who makes the final decision. If the admin is hell-bent on someone, that's who the new coach is going to be. The day after Hughes was fired, everyone at JSU knew who the new guy was going to be. Whether we liked him or not was immaterial, it was just fact. Which leads to number 3...

3) Be nice to the incoming coach. I don't care if you hate him, Once he signs on the dotted line, throw all the support you can behind him. Even if you have to grit your teeth, just do it. The reason is simple: A new coach needs all the help he can get in winning over the returning players. If the players see you lining up against the coach, how do you think they'll react? Sadly, some of us at JSU still hasn't grasped that concept. When you have someone you don't believe is qualified for the job, the worst thing you can do is give him excuses for losing. On the contrary, you want to take away any possible excuse he might possibly have. So If he doesn't succeed, he'll have no excuses to fall back on.

4) Make sure he's the right fit for your program. If you want to win now, hire an experienced coach with a proven track record. If you just want to start over and rebuild for the future, then you may hire someone that'll grow into the job. Some of these young assistants may be popular choices, but keep in mind that most coaches will struggle their first year. People like Bob Stoops and Ralph Freigdan are the exceptions to the rule. A first time headcoach will often be ambitous, enthusiastic and in over his head. If you aren't prepared to be patient, hire a Rick Comegy or L.C. Cole.

I don't pretend to be an expert on this subject. But when your team just finished 2-10, you tend to learn a lot more about your program than you want to. Remember, change, even for the worse, is better than standing still.

I don't know about the year after next, but I'm sure the UAPB fans will support more simply because of the "CHANGE". We embraced Hardman when he came on. We all wanted Hardman. Hardman did a very good job, but he just didn't adapt to the SWAC after the SWAC adapted to him. UAPB did very good against SWAC teams in the 90's, but once coaches got Hardman's number, he didn't do as good. The result was 3 losing seasons, blow-out loses, homecoming loses, losing on opening day to the new stadium, low player moral, low fan support.

So, I think just the fact of "CHANGE" will do for this next year. Our new coach won't be under pressure until year 3 I guess. We are not in the same situation as JSU, when you fired your coach for consecutive 7-4 season. Hardman would still be there with those type of numbers.

I agree with each one of your points.

Prodigy,

When I saw all of the :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:

coming from the UAPB and the TxSo faithful I could not help but remember the same excitement when Hughes was fired. Now those same people are looking :( . This thing is a process and they do need to know what the administration wants. The JSU faithful wanted someone to come in and win right away....the JSU administration wanted someone to rebuild the program.

Cosigning /99. Transitional schools would be very wise to take heed to this advice.

(But fortunately for them, I doubt their fans are prone to being nearly as fickle and knee-jerkish as the ones on Lynch Street.) They might even accept an.... an.... (gulp).... an outsider. :eek2:

We did not fire Hughes for going 7-4. We fired him because we saw a steady decline in the talent and discipline in the program. We knew that Hughes would never win a championship because he did not know enough about how to.

True. The program got worse and worse each year under his watch. In fact, the fact that we azzed our way into 7 wins his last couple of years hurt us more than it helped us. Folks who just didn't know any better thought things were just fine. :bawling:

We went from
two seasons of 8-3 to
two seasons of 6-5 to
two seasons of 3-8 to
one season of 4-7 (It would have been another 3-8 year if JSU didn't have their off year).

The 8-3 seasons were the years when loses were only to SU, JSU, and GSU. The SU loses were always close or overtime loses. Then the 6-5 years were the years in which the SWAC became very pass happy and we didn't. Then came the 3-8 when we could only manage to win against Valley, PVU, and sneak up on one more SWAC school.

So we should have been smart (LIKE JSU) and stop the bleeding during the 6-5 seasons. We knew then that a championship was out of the question with Hardman. The program may have hit rock bottom, so we could be in for another 3-8 season because of the mess he leaves behind.

Sperm that all depends AGAIN on the philosophy of the new coach. When Doug came to Gram, he was patient and decided to build a program by bringing in quality freshmen. When LC got to AlaState, he was impatient and brought in a slew of Jr college transfers. Bell only had 8 scholarships last year so his philosophy is not yet known but I read an article that says that he is going to hit the JUCO's....maybe that is his philosophy or maybe he feels pressured to because he knows that at the very least he needs 6 wins next year.

So if you have another 3-8 season, you have to look at a lot of things before you judge your coach. Just like you said UAPB would have been 3-8 had JSU had it's normal season, I have been preaching the same thing all year about the wins over SU, TNState, and Alcorn that Hughes got last year. If those teams had been as good as they were this year, Hughes would ahve been 4-7 (and that because of Valley, PV, UAPB, and AAMU). The decline was quite evident to the JSU faithful.

..but not as evident at the UAPB decline..kekekeke

What are you talking about? Name 1 Texas Southern poster that's represents that face since 3:30 pm Monday?

UAPB went 8-3 because they still had NAIA kids who moved on up...Roderick Robinson was one hell of a quarterback.

Sperm is right, they have not adjusted to NCAA...makes you wonder if the program is ready for the NCAA due to the lack of competition in all sports.

Hardman's early teams pretty much ran through the SWAC. After the SWAC teams adjusted to Hardman, it was all over because he didn't have an answer.

As for basketball, UAPB never put much attention of basketball. UAPB has always been a football school and that may never change. With Pine Bluff having the largest percentage of black atheletes and the city has several professional atheletes in all sport (Torie Hunter-baseball, Willie Roth-football), most of the states top football talent comes out of Pine Bluff.

Talent was never the problem, it was always coaching. In the mid 90s, talent won those games. I think the talent will continue to come to UAPB. If we can get someone to prepare a COLLEGE GAMEPLAN, we could be dangerous.

cant agree with you on that one..... I remember when I was lil.... the UAPB and AAMU basketball games use to be a war.... UAPB was actually a rival to AAMU in basketball. They had to have a fiyah squad because back then AAMU wasnt losing more than 2 or 3 games a year. Our crowd use to look foward to the UAPB basketball games.... UAPB was a NAIA school back then I believe.
