Turning 18= registered voter automatically

What I Live By...
Do you think Americans should automatically be registered to vote when they turn 18?

Or course that doesn't mean they have to vote.

I see it like this.... the people who want to vote are registered. There are registration drives EVERYWHERE, if you cant take the time to register (doesnt take 5 minutes) then you damn wont take the time to wait in line to vote.

GO register. Show some responsibility. In fact If you are 17 and a few months, you can also vote....I read that somewhere on the net.

I think it should require a little effort. I mean, we are talking about voting. It only takes a few minutes to register. I was oh so excited to register when I turned 18.

I like it. I mean, when teen turns 18, they are automatically eligible for join the military. I see it this way, the government does not want the American people to vote. If they did, it would be more convient to do so.

I mean, we can vote by phone, Internet and text messages for crap like Reality TV shows, American Idol and Dancing With The Stars. Why can't we do the same thing for something that REALLY matters?

There is no way in the world with all the advances in communications and technology that we have to be limited to only going to a polling place to vote.

I agree that been registered to vote does not automatically make that person want to vote. I think people don't register to vote for a number of reasons:

1. Young voters are uniformed/not educated about the voting process.

2. There is a lot of pressure to vote for a certain party or candidate. I never really understood why my parents never told people who they voted for until I got older. Boy, if you are not committed to a certain candidate or do not agree with a candidate the majority of your peeps like, the American people will blast you. That's why I am not telling anyone who I will vote for come November.

3. A lot of people don't trust the government and feel it does not matter who is in office because they think things will be the same.

you just gave 3 horrible excuses. Dont know out your state but in Bama we are required to take Government in 12th grade....thats where I learned everything about the voting process and how to get registered.

Those are not excuses. You would be surprised how many people I've run into who shared those same views.

A lot of people don't trust the government. A lot of people don't understand the voting process and a lot of people don't register or vote because they are intimated by all that voting features. It's not easy for some people to pick a candidate.

A lot of people don't understand how the issues affect them or who is best suited to address those issues.

That is reality.

You don't automatically go straight into the military. You have to sign up. Same goes for voting. It is not that difficult to register.

I think we should and do take voting for local, state and national officials a bit more serious than some tv show competition.

I know you have to sign up to join the military once you turn 18 if you want to join. I was just saying that voting should be treated in the same manner.

Voting is treated the same. You have to sign up. Nothing is automatic about it. Same goes for an education. Public education is free, but your parents have to sign you up. Anything worth having requires a little effort.

I understand that, but voting should be made more convient. I mean, once you turn 18 and are a legal resident, all you should have to do is go to a polling place and vote. Why do you have to register first? As long as you have a driver's license or state identification card or Social Security card, it should be nothing to it.
