Alabama State came into Thursday's 85th Turkey Day Classic with a season's worth of disappointment and bad breaks on its back. Tuskegee entered riding an era of good fortune.

As the fourth quarter wound down and the Golden Tigers marched down the field toward a potential game-winning touchdown, another Hornet heartbreak seemed almost written in stone. But this time, there was no ASU implosion. There was no cruel twist of fate.

For once, ASU got the breaks. And the Golden Tigers got the heartbreak.

Three Tuskegee passes into the end zone in the final seconds all fell incomplete. Then the fourth was intercepted, and the Hornets had shocked Tuskegee 17-13, winning their first Classic in four years and snapping the Golden Tigers' 26-game win streak.

"This means everything -- it was just so important for these kids and these coaches," said ASU head coach Reggie Barlow. "Our guys fought so hard in this game, and they never gave up. That says something about them. It's hard to even put this into words."

The Tuskegee players and coaches were equally speechless, but for very different reasons.
 



Congrats to the ASU Hornets in their victory over the Golden Tigers. They executed their gameplan of stopping Atkinson and the TU offense to perfection. The TU Football team has nothing to hang their heads about. To win twenty-six consecutive games is a major feat. TU will reload and be back next year.
 
What I wanna know how is an FCS team beating an DII team an upset as pointed on on the front of this Web site?

Man, forget those rankings. There is no way a FCS D-I team should feel like they have accomplished something by beating a D-II team. That is like Wisconsin jumping for joy after beating FCS Cal-Poly.

The Badgers are supposed to beat the crap out of that team just like Bama State is supposed to cream Tuskegee.

The Hornets play in the tougher league and have "better" players. Anybody in the Bama State family should take this win with a grain of salt.

Disreagard the Division -- this is a rivalry game that has been around since 1924. At one point, we werer all on the same level.

Also, if you look at those DII and NAIA teams -- you have to realize they are not under the same stringent rules as D-1's (% towards your degree)...So some of their teams are just as talented...They just have less scholarship players...

Do you expect people to be like robots after they win a hard fought battle?

Not necessarily, everyone puts on their shoulder pads the same. You should know as a former athlete...Anything can happen. So should Tiger Woods win every event that he's entered in because he's so much better than everyone. Should Barry Bonds have hit a homerun every at bat against you the year he hit 73?

I am not saying the fans and players should not be happy with a win, but they should take in account who they beat. I know Tuskegee is a soild DII team and has been that way for a while, but they are still DII. I mean if the SWAC has to call beating a DII team an upset, how far do we need to go as a conference?

When I played my freshman year we lost to NAIA Loyola twice. Our coach was embarassed. Even though we were a young team at the time he felt there is no excuse as a D1 school to lose to an NAIA opponent.

That is the mentality we have to have. I think it is good on occassion to act like robots after certain games. Bama State should be saying Hey, Tuskegee should be trying to be better than us. We have better athletes, coaches and play in the FCS. They should not be on the same field as us.

Yes Tiger and Barry should expect to win that golf tourney or hit that homer. They already do think like that. It is what separates world class athletes from everybody else. Why even be on the field if you are going to think any other way?

Not oh, the Hornets beating Tuskegee is an upset.

Dude this is football, where an upset can happen on any gameday. When it comes to a rivalry game it doesn't matter what division a team is in. It comes down to what team makes the most plays and who wants to win the game the most.

If the other team is better -- then its an upset. Obviously, this particular D-2 football team is better than ASU. That's why it was an upset.

You could also look at track -- there are D-2 athletes who have better results than D-1 athletes. Not because their talent was better, but because that's where their education took them.

You didn't understand my point -- yes, every individual should have those thoughts but from a fan perspective or reality, Tiger will not win every tourney and Barry wouldn't have hit a homerun off of you every at bat in the year he hit 72 -- even though his talent was and is far superior. That same anology could be used when speaking a D-1 is supposed to beat a D-2...Its not going to always happen and it could be an upset if the D-2 is better than the D-1.

Using track is a bad example because it is more of an individual sport. In football it is hard as heck for a lower level division team to beat a upper level division team because of the depth disparity when it comes to talent. You can find five guys at the D2 level who can run track against a D1 squad.

It is hard to find 30 to 50 guys that matchup man to man with a D1 team if you are a D2 team.

Well Olde Hornet, you are one of the first mugz I remember from way back on TSPN. You've been a good sport during the heartbreaks administered to the Hornets by my Tuskegee Tigers these past few years. To that end I must come in and take these next 363 or so days of ASU bragging rights. Congradulations on a determined effort by the Hornets to pull out a classic Turkey Day match-up win over my Tuskegee Tigers. I'll see you next year and maybe I'll have to post up and play a round of golf with you and a rabble of ASUers the day before the game. Congrats, we'll be back.
