TUBAS

I prefer the sound you get from a brass horn. The Conn 20K is the 'standard bearer' I've been told.

I'm sure the fiberglass horns LAST LONGER and are more economical, but pound-for-pound, sound-for-sound, gimme the brass horn, nukkas....

:tup::tup:

Fiberglass tend to have more resistance as you put in more air. They do have a rich tone in the lower register but less volume due to the resistance and the timbre. Metal horns usually have less resistance, and a richer tone in the upper register. As far as looks are concerned, I feel your sousas should compliment your uni. Example- PV with gold sousas, gRambling would look good like that as well. The Ocean with silver given the uni they're in now. Personally I like the look of fiberglass, especially with at least 24-26 in the instrumentation.

Well here's my two cents. I've played on both and I prefer the metal horns. I like that ring from the bells. I agree that the fiberglass horns do hold the sound back. It took me more air to get it going than the metal one.

p.s. Conn is #1

I have my running shoes on, but this is my opinion and I am sticking to it. As a tuba player I must say that
MOST OF OUR BANDS HAVE WA-A-A-AY TOO MANY SOUSAPHONES AND END UP SOUNDING LIKE RAGGEDY HOOPDIES WITH TOO MANY WOOFERS RIDING DOWN THE STREET MAKING NOISE.

There. I got that off my chest. The physics of sound already lets us know that but we keep blowing right by it.

I will stick with metal tubas in a 1:20 ratio with bands with symphonic balanced numbers for wind instrumentation. The ratio should be slightly closer for brass-heavy bands but probably never tighter than 1:14.

Bama St. is more like 2:1

And, this is the very reason I want the "U" to stick with what they got. I don't mind the metal sound....but, I sure as he!! don't want that heavy, overbearing sound, just for the sake of having metal tubas that are "bringing it" ( ), just to try and keep up with the Jones'.

At SU, them white horses already got that magic, if you ask me.

Let me elaborate:
26 sousas
26 bell fronts
26 mellos
40 bones (all big bore, f-attachment, close wrapped)
52 trpts
22 saxes (8 are tenors)
18 claris
12 piccs
8 cymbals
8 snares
6 tenors
6 basses

These Brass Sousaphones sound pretty good IMOP!
