"He is academically eligible to particiate. He has been from the start of the season. This is something that's specific to this game and as athletic director I want to err on the side of caution.

"I want to be clear this is an institutional decision. This is not a decision that came from the NCAA."



Hey Doc, you pretty much hit the nail on the head, because my sources tell me also, it's not academically related......TXSU made this call, from what I heard, based on Arvell Nelson's financial issues.

Really... Because a lot of schools will drop you at a certain point if school fees aren't paid for. So this is even more confusing... This would mean in essence, Nelson, wasn't officially enrolled?????

I'm thinking that is/was the case for Nelson. If the reason was due to financial reasons, he was probably given a deadline to have a balance paid off and didn't meet the deadline.

Can't speak for anyone else, but what I mean by financial issues, Nelson may owe a balance to Texas Southern for something and it has not been paid in full. I don't know if this is true or not, but his absence was NOT due to his academics and it was NOT issued by NCAA, but by TXSU. Obviously Texas Southern has a policy in place if students do not meet their financial obligation by an appointed deadline.

I don't know if this is the reason why Nelson was not allowed to play, but I strongly think it is.

Exactly, usa. Think about it........most schools strictly enforce all outstanding balances to be paid in full BEFORE or by the current semester ends.

Again, I don't know if this is the reason Nelson did not play.

Well at Grambling if you are not paid by Mid terms i feel for ya. They don't give you the entire semester. Doesn't make any sense to do that if you really sit back and think about it. lmao

I honestly don't know how it is at UAPB, but I think at the beginning of the year, every student is given a balance of their account, whether you owe or not. If you do owe a balance, you do (I believe) have until the end of the current semester to pay it off. I do know that if you do owe a balance and are on work study, then the school will use that toward the balance ( a lot of work study students used this to help them out). But again, I don't know if that's how it works at UAPB.


But you are correct, usa, time will tell.....we shall see.

Pops, you as a former athlete know as well as I do. THIS IS NO KNOCK AT COACH J. COLE, but some people are so desperate for good athletes and for a good winning season. They tell these kids, especially the black athletes, they're there for them, whatever they need they can come to them, but when the mess hits the fan, they hang these kids out to dry, and some turn their backs on them completely.

I hope this is not the case with Arvell Nelson, and Coach Cole was wearing his jersey number, so maybe he did all he could for Nelson......even though he and the AD made the decision to not have him play.

"Nelson is eligible to play academically, but an in-house investigation brought out concerns that McClelland deemed strong enough to not risk the championship game by playing Nelson.
Even should the NCAA later determine that Nelson was in violation of an NCAA rule, a school source said the violation would be secondary in nature, and would not result in the forfeiture of any other games in which he played.
The NCAA often allows schools to determine whether to play an athlete in such a circumstance, but is particularly harsh in punishment if a school chooses to let student athlete participate in competition when there are any questions or evidence that a rules violation may have indeed occurred."

So we will just wait and see and trust the powers that be to "do the right thing" :lol:

Why would Nelson need funding for school? Isn't he on full scholarship? Perhaps he illegally accepted money.

I'll withhold my congrats to Texas So. until after the investigation.:snicker:
