Texas Southern Lady Tigers Select New Head Coach
Former Tarleton Head Coach Claude Cummings to lead women?s basketball team


(August 11, 2003) HOUSTON -- Texas Southern University Athletic Director Alois Blackwell announced today that Claude Cummings has been officially named as the women?s basketball head coach.

Cummings joins TSU after having spent four years at Tarleton State University as the head women?s basketball coach. In 2002, Cummings led the TexAnns to their only non-losing season since 1994. He was named Lone Star Conference (LSC) South Division Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading Tarleton State to their first appearance in the LSC postseason playoffs and NCAA Division II Tournament. During his tenure as head coach, Tarleton produced one first-team All-LSC player, three second-team and four honorable mention picks.

?We?re excited to announce Claude Cummings as the head women?s basketball coach. We feel that he will positively influence our student athletes and properly motivate them to excel in the classroom as well as compete on the court,? Blackwell stated.

?I am really excited about coming to Texas Southern and the upcoming season,? said Cummings. ?My style of play is up tempo with aggressive defense. I want to be competitive and play good fundamental basketball.?

A native Houstonian and graduate of Klein Forest High School, Cummings has eight years of coaching experience at the collegiate level. Prior to coaching the women?s team, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Tarleton State (1996-1998), where he earned a master?s degree in education. Cummings? first stint as a head coach was at Ranger Junior College, where, in 1998, he directed the team to its first playoff appearance in 10 years.

During the 2002-2003 season, the Lady Tigers were 3-15 in Southwestern Athletic Conference competition and 5-22 overall.

Him or Cynthia Cooper? Revitalize a dead program or put a guy in bad circumstances with a losing record?

we are the only school who'll keep a losing coach around and turn away winning coaches.
 



This is an absolute travesty. I have been a loyal and supporting alumnus for over 20 years. I am a multiple season ticket holder and I donate to most of the athletic programs. This might be the straw that breaks the camels back. Never in my life have I been so disheartened by the events transpiring at my beloved Alma Mata. It is apparent someone is attempting to destroy the Texas Southern Athletic program from within. How can you justify hiring a coach with a losing record to turn your program around. Mr. Blackwell reason for not pursuing Texas Southern Alumnus D. Taylor was He an the Jackson State athletic director are friends. It is apparent now with this hire. For the first time that I can think of, I am considering severing my ties with Texas Southern University. It is apparent the Board of Regents, The Administration or Anyone with any power to make changes has no regards for The Alumni or anyone who truly loves Texas Southern University. This come from a person who has gone beyond the call of duty. In fact, I am not sure it at this point we would not be better under some one system. This might be the objective, how can you not consider a Cynthia Cooper and hire this under achiever. Perhaps the old saying is true, birds of a feather flock together.
 
Y'all need to call the local news stations and chain yourselves to the athletic department doors in protest.

Take it back to how black folks got down in the '60s. Make some signs, organize an actual sit-in, and make sure they show it on the news.

That is your only hope.

I feel your pain, dude. But y'all don't need to be messing with Denise. We got a good thang going on at JSU with her, and we don't need y'all messing with it.
 
He???? I've know SOME men coaches do a great job coaching women. However, I don't know if I ever seen TSU with a female head coach, TSU should have hired a female coach for this job. I really think this was a bad move on the AD'S part. Cynthia Cooper would have been an outstanding addition to TSU and the SWAC.
 
We had two women coaches if I recall correctly:

Coach Peggy Stapleton
Coach Star (can't recall her last name)

C-Leb, if I am not mistaken there was another one also. I cannot remember her name (Her last name may have been Harris). But anyway, she played her college ball at either Delta State or Old Dominion(sp?). And at one time she was considered the top female player in the country.

If I am not mistaken, she only coached for one season, and she did not complete it. I think she up and quit in the middle of the season or something (don't quote me on that now, cause I ain't sure what happened). I just know she was not at TSU very long.

Yes, that was big Eddie that played for us mother. I can't recall her first name at this moment.
