Texas Southern football coach Johnnie Cole has fired four members of his staff, a person familiar with the situation said Monday.

Defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Kevin Ramsey, running backs coach Melvin Spears, linebackers coach Archie McDaniel and special teams coordinator/defensive ends coach Gregory Green were relieved of their duties.

Cole declined to comment when reached Monday night.

TSU won five of its last six games to finish 6-5, largely as a result of its defense. The Tigers were ranked 21st out of 118 FCS programs in total defense (295.45 yards per game) and 20th in pass defense (169.27 yards per game).

Isn't this backwards? You HAD a good defense. No lie. Waiting to see the reasoning behind this.

Couldn't fire any offensive staff, other than Spears. That would have included himself as he's the one calling plays.... :emlaugh:

I don't get it? What does PV have to do with this?

Loosing to PV gets people fired!!!! For pv to come from where they did and be where they are, what were the other choaches in the swac doing while pv continually imporved? Heads should roll!!!

Congrats to pv, they have raised the coaching bar in the swac!

I wonder if we (sTu) can take the raised bar along with everything else we taking from pv?

Note to pv: you better start paying your staff better!

I heard when things were looking down early in the season and cole was facing the hot seat some folks wanted Spears as his replacement. You know he had to get rid of him, he could feel Spear's breath on the back of his neck. Anytime things went south sTu had a very good replacement already on the side line. I am not suprised at all.

You hear all kinds of rumor...one that I heard was that there was friction between the two based on what you commented above, and the fact that there was some advice from your current AD (McClelland) to release Spears.

Could be all rumors, but the person who relayed it to me tends to be dead on with such things.

Wasn't this Ramsey's first season as DC. TSU had a STRONG defensive showing and I'm anxious to see which direction they go now.

If you ask me there was seriously no need for this move. It wasn't your offense that I was worried about improving. You guys HAD a damned good defense with Ramsey in place.

The defense was pretty good and was headed in the right direction. I don't get this one!

Maybe he's clearing space for Wade Phillips on his staff.

if you went to Valley you would've seen why one move was made..

but I swear Green was in Alabama this weekend..I swear...sitting at the table

McDaniel just got there....nice guy...remember him in high school...that'll be 3 defenses in 3 years...damn

I saw another stu coach there partying.......errrr..... representing stu in Birmingham. :D

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...................if this is true, could he be making room for Pete to become his DC................

Regards.

I saw him both nights at the PV parties.

*quote*<b>"GOTTA' REPRESENT THAT TEXAS BABEEEEEEEEEY!!!!!! :D"</b>

Man, someone needs to pick up that DC FAST! What the hell is Cole thinking. There must have been some insubordination. Spears is also an asset, not a liability.

Imagine if either of those get a head coaching gig and hires the other to coordinate the other side of the ball... Something to think about! I wouldn't mind seeing it happen. Folk talk about "recycling" coaches but I think these two guys are both quality coaches.

Change that four to three assistant football coaches fired...

Turns out the administration would not allow Cole to fire the defensive coordinator (Ramsey).
