TSPN Atlanta: What can you tell me about Austell?

I live and work in Norcross. Duluth is nice. But if you need go to Atlanta everyday, then you will have a long commute.

Syrma is nice and close to the city. Austell looks old and run down to me.

I don't live in Atl, but I have been there enough to know that Smyrna is the shit! Me and the wife have already agreed that is the place we are living if we ever had to relocate to the area.

And if you got some money, do Vinings (right next to Smyrna).

Move to Bankhead. Best part of Atlanta.

Atlanta aint got no super tough neighborhoods.... even in the places locals consider hood, you will see a bunch of *****s outside battle dancing against each other. My brother use to live in Bankhead. I dont feel uncomfortable anywhere in Atlanta.... now Birmingham is a TOTALLY different story... nothing but interstate and Legion Field for me.

I agree. Smyrna is a great place. But that the only place I lived. I don't know how DaHill say Smyrna is like Austell. Smyrna touches ATL. Cumberland Mall is like 8 minutes from downtown. Austell and Marrietta are much farther ... and Kennesaw... forget about it. I was going to visit my niece at KSU a few months ago and I thought I would never make it there.

all depends on how far off in there you stay. Thornton Rd is considered Austell and is right off 20.... Cumberland Mall is basically Marietta also... im not talking about ol school Marietta where downtown is. Kennessaw is a different beast.. If I moved there I would go to ATL once a month.

You are correct, after Atlanta won the Olympics and re-gentrification occurred Atlanta changed and tore down its bad areas. I didn't grow up in that Atlanta so I can't really relate to the new areas. Juts like areas and schools like SW Dekalb, Redan, Towers, Henry county were majority white areas when I grew up. When my cousin graduated from Redan in 1989 she was only like 100 of the blacks who went to Redan. Kind of like when I came to Huntsville there was no all black neighborhoods or all black high schools. Now it is totally different. You gotta remember I grew up in the up rising of the drug war era. Bham is now what Atl was before we won the Olympics. Winning the Olympics was the best thing ever to happen to Atl. Changed the city over night. 84-91 is a totally different Atl then what it is now. Bham has never had real leadership therefore it will never change. White boys in Bama are different from the white boys in ga. Bama white boys don't want change.

You are exactly correct! I read an article several years ago that said ATL and B'ham had virtually the same population in the 40's-60's. The whites in Georgia were racist but valued money more than anything and were willing to change because of that. The whites in Alabama only cared about segration! Look at the two cities now...
Wow, Redan was mostly white? My son graduated from McEachern this year and all the old whites in the area always start a conversation with....the school sure has changed since I was there. Meaning, there sure are a lot of blacks there now! LOL

Okay, my job is off 575 in the Chastain Meadows Industrial Park. So I'm going to have a drive no matter what.

The part of "Austell" we are looking at seems to be right on the fringe of Marietta so like someone said, they seem to be right on each other. She is not all that fond of Kennesaw because it seems far away from the "life"

We are also looking to rent a townhome so that is influencing the decision as well.

Thanks for all the responses and if you got anything else, please don't hesitate!

Just whats around for 30 somethings, traffic (relative), standard of life, things like that.

It all depends on where in Austell you live. My partner lives in Austell and he's about 5 minutes fromI-20. He only paid $126k for a really nice 3bd rm crib.
I'm used to heading to the city to have a good time. There really isn't anything entertainment wise in Austell.
Austell to me is cool if you do not have middle and high school age kids. The high schools (S Cobb and Pebblebrook) are not very good. Everyone is posting about how great Smyrna is but what they are not mentioning is they are likely talking about the Vinings area. Vinings is not an incorporated city and it's addresses are either Smyrna or Atlanta. There are areas of Smyrna you do not want to live, i.e. Windy Hill, parts of S. Cobb, parts of Atlanta Rd, etc.
Hell, if your money is right move to the city.

BTW...where will your job be?

Man Redan, Norcross, Stone Mountain, Morrow, Clayton County period was 80% white up until the late 90's. The only black high schools in Dekalb were Columbia and Walker which turned into Mcnair. The city of Atlanta had 22 high schools up until 1994. Which the only ones who were majority white were Northside which is now North Atlanta and Grady high school. Blacks have spread out in Atlanta, were as BHAM has stayed the same. No progress at all.

Maybe so, 'cause I'm not sure where Vinings begins and ends. So, I'll just the Smyrna area is nice.

SU, Kennesaw is a little far out to me, if you planning on getting into the city often. But if you're trying to stay close to your job and OK with staying close to your area for shopping/eating, etc, then go with Kennesaw. Good luck!

Their the same to me. GA just has more transplants.

Not true. Ga boys are about money. Even if you go back to the civil right days. Bama boys wanna prove points. The difference in them is shown by comparing the states. Bama is light years behind Ga in everything from job to education.

I'd seriously look at Kennesaw! Get a spot right off Barrett Pkwy or Bells Ferry. Also check out spots in Marietta near the north and south loop, Roswell Rd (Marietta, not Atlanta). Smyrna would be a good look 'cause your drive to Kennesaw in the morning would be easy (traffic will be headed against you).
There are parts of Austell where you would have 45 min to hour+ drive to Kennesaw.
I just thought of another really nice spot. It should be considered Atlanta but I'm not sure. If you are looking for an apt there are some really nice spots right off of 285 and 75. If you are on 285 headed toward Sandy Springs/Dunwoody (east) it's right off of 285 on your immediate right. REAL tight apt's, condo's, etc

What part of Smyrna are you liking so much? I used to work in Smyrna and drove up/down Windy Hill everyday and there's not much nice over there.

Seriously though, I have always considered where would I move to if I ever come back home. The city and the metro area has changed so much that I just don't know where I would go. Most of close friends I grew up with moved away from Atlanta like me, but all my friends from AAMU moved there  . At one point I really considered coming back to Atlanta, but now my mother is gone, I have no desire to come to Atlanta. I know I need to come visit my family, but I just ain't interested in coming that way right now. I might make it up next year sometime. My sister and brothers live out towards Henry, but I don't wanna move out that way.

That's the thing with me. I could stay right here on Mars, but I may look for a new compound to retire.

....I think the best advice is to move somewhere close to your job, with quick access to the interstate; traffic can be a pain.

Fugg all that Kennesaw, Duluth, Lawrenceville, etc. isht. That isht too far out, and plus you around a bunch of crackers; that is, if you like that kind of isht or its close to your job.

"Snake"

Aye mane! I'm in Kennesaw! :lmao: You are around a lot of white people but it's cool white people.

Cumberland Mall is more Atlanta than Marietta. You can pretty much call anything ITP (inside the perimeter of 285) Atlanta. I think they do that anyway even though Atlanta doesn't actually start until you cross the Chattahoochee River going south on 75. Cumberland Mall is actually in Smyrna. Marietta doesn't begin until you get close to Windy Hill Road.

Kennesaw is not how it used to be. The only thing that Kennesaw doesn't have is the high end stores/restaurants and the nightlife is sorely lacking. But, I don't go out often anyway so it doesn't bother me. Kennesaw is about a 15-20 minute ride to the Atlanta city limits. I'm about 30 minutes from the Georgia Dome. That's not bad to me.

Plus, I love the "law" in Kennesaw that states that each household MUST have a gun.
