Tribute to Coach Rob

Every Swac school should wear a Eddie Robinson patch on their jersey this season.

I'll be the bearer of controversey. But no. The SWAC, the conference was established a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong time before Grambling and Coach Robinson entered. I think it would do a disservice to the Fullers and others (Wiley, Jarvis, Huston-Tillotson, etc). I think it would do a disservice to the Mr Nicks and Mr Carsons of the SWAC.

I'd sincerely understand if Grambling decided to do that though.

Why would it be a disservice. What Eddie Robinson did for BCF is way greater than what Nicks, Carson, and even The Lengendary A.W.Mumford(college football hall of Fame) ever did. If you don't realize that something is truly wrong.

What Mr. Robinson did for blacks, Grambling, and subsequently for BCF is irrefutable. But I (speaking for self) do NOT want to see his name or anyone else's name other than PV formers on anything that is purple/gold and says Prairie View A&M University on the jersey. That's not right FOR us. For you see, we never even honored our own when Mr. Nicks (whose history is thoroughly documented) passed. It would show great stupidity on PV officials behalf if they did otherwise. I'm sure PV will pay tribute in another way. Or at least I hope so.

Prairie View is the SWAC and the SWAC was BEGAT by Prairie View amongst others here...................... on this soil. Not Mr. Robinson, Grambling, or any other current SWAC participant. So, no other is above the SWAC IMO.

I hope you understand.

What about how MLB letting some players on each team wear No. 42 as a tribute to Jackie Robinson this season. Are they wrong for doing that? Eddie Robinson did so much for HBCU sports that every team should do it. Without him BCF would not have evolved like it did. During his time, Robinson was bigger than the BCF. Doug Williams told the story about how people in Japan knew who is was and mobbed him for pictures and autographs when the team played over their in the 1970s. The guy has had networtks do documentaries about him and Grambling. He's been on the cover of SI as well. He has more wins than Bear Bryant and prouduced 200 NFL players, four HOFers and the 1st black quarterback to lead a team to a Super Bowl win. He not only deserves every team to wear a patch, he deserves so much more. It would be an honor to his family if the SWAC went forth with that idea.

SUjag i agree with you! Eddie Robinson opened doors for HBCU's and people really need to acknowledge that, the people that disagree with not wearing a patch honoring him is lost, blind, selfish and just ah i can't say the other word. I know many HBCU teams beyond the SWAC will do something honorary for Coach Rob, the man was a legend and a treasure and there will be no one like him in Black College Football in a million years!

I am specifically in agreeance with this above. If the SWAC mandates that all member institutions pay homage to Coach Robinson then so be it. I'll support that. However, if we are to have each individual member institution pay repects in their own ways, it would not be in PV's best interest to honor someone in a manner that they did not do for their own. Thats simply my opinion. I'm certain PV will rightfully pay tribute to Coach Robinson though.

Coach Robinson just did not belong to Grambling State, the SWAC the fans or the media. Coach Robinson belonged to everyone. He made a social and athletic impact that will never be duplicated again by any person in this country. This is not the time to be prideful. You say it would not be in the best interest to honor Robinson at PV because he was not your Own. Yes, Eddie Robinson was your own because he represented the SWAC, college football itself and more importantly, he represented African-Americans everywhere--even if they never heard of Grambling, the SWAC or Eddie Robinson.
People on this board talk so much about how younger people don't know about HBCUs and SWAC or BCF. You talk so much about we don't know about our history, but yet you don't want teams to wear a patch or sticker with is name one it over some BS. I'm only 23-years-old and I always had a sense of historical events and people. I remember after 9/11 every MLB team wore hats that had NYPD or NYFD on them. You did not hear people say, those people that died in the towers "were not our own." Or it's wrong that MLB is making teams wear those hats of a city they don't even play in.
know it is just your opinion, but sometimes you have to think of we before me.

For you see, we never even honored our own when Mr. Nicks (whose history is thoroughly documented) passed. It would show great stupidity on PV officials behalf if they did otherwise.

Well why did PV NOT do that for coach Nicks? And aren't the officials at PV different now than before?

You say it would not be in the best interest to honor Robinson at PV because he was not your Own. me.

Where did I say that? I believe I basically stated that PV should rightfully honor Coach Robinson on their own terms if all member institutions are left to pay respect individually. If the SWAC mandates that a "Coach Robinson" patch be worn by all teams then PV will have to comply and I will support that. But it would not sit well with me personally if "on their own terms" for PV officials means honoring Robinson in a manner that they did not even honor Nicks and the others that contributed to the University. This is not an affront to Coach Robinson and his legacy but moreso a question of how we are doing business on the Hill.

Again, this is my opinion...nothing more, nothing less.

I don't see a problem with it. Some people don't realize what Coach Rob did for CF and BCF as a whole. What he did trancends rivalry on the mere gridiron. I feel sorry for tose that don't understand his impact. First black coach to step foot in to a AFCA meeting in the '50's. First black President of the AFCA. Took his team to play in places where blacks dare not go and pack the house. The SWAC was recognized along with every shining moment of Coach Robs life. The SWAC has marketed its association with Eddie Robinson. I don't think the SWAC would be as well known had Coach Rob not coached in it. I mean no one can ever slight what Coach did. Although he battled every Saturday with SWAC teams at the end of the day with Coach Rob it was all about the SWAC and BCF as a whole. I think he did for College Football what Jackie Robinson did for MLB. Its real deep. Bill Curry had some real stuff to say about coach on espn.com He would tell the white NFL scouts about other athletes at HBCU's that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Give credit where credit is do, and lets stop hating on one another as black people. Because if the NCAA mandated that all NCAA institutions where a patch honoring Pop Warner, you'd wear it with a shut mouth...... Thank you Coach Rob!!!!

Sad.

Perhaps each member school (at their discretion) could send a monetary contribution to the Eddie Robinson Museum... cut the check now, and make a halftime presentation (with that big azz check) during halftime of their game against GSU.

I respect your thoughts, but man you are wrong on this one. The SWAC has grown leaps and bounds since Coach Nicks and most of that is owed to the likes of Eddie Robinson...I would expect the conference to do something special this year.

And by the way, I would be curious to know how Coach Nicks would feel about the state of football affairs at PV?

MikeBigg, I can see that happening in Pitt and ULM, but at our HBCUs I don't think so.

You people are speaking on emotion vs intelligence. I TRULY understand that. Really I do. Like I said earlier, I'm sure PV will pay tribute diligently. I would hope so. But his "name" on a PV jersey when PV didn't even do likewise for one of it's own sons/daughters amongst OTHER HIGHLY NOTABLE SONS/DAUGHTERS? Laughable @ best. THOSE are the people I (ego, summa, sunt, first person singular) hold in the highest regard. No one is higher than the SWAC IMO.

I guess Rick Perry should order the lowering of flags in the entire state as well. (wouldn't be surprised if he did though to save face w/ black folx) lol

Have @ your opinion because I'm certainly stuck on mine and mine is stuck w/ descendants of families here....... on this soil. Not elsewhere.

Lastly, if you have dumb questions, please direct them to PV's campus admins IF you're capable lol of googling/yooo-hooing PV on the web for contact information. lol I don't entertain foolishness or stupidity. :swink:

A perfect opportunity for the SWAC, MEAC, CIAA and SIAC commissioners to get over petty differences and come together with a fitting tribute to Coach Rob

At very least the SWAC office should step in with an inspiring initiative that people will fall in line behind.

No matter what HBCU colors you bleed, Coach Rob represented each and every HBCU on an international stage.

But that was PV's choice when it happened right?

One person waving purple banners should not prevent a nation of African Americans from recognizing an icon that changed the equation for ALL HBCUs.

"Black people, what cha'll gonna do?"

But that was PV's choice when it happened right?

I dunno. Ask them. :hat:

Don't worry. I don't work for PV. lol It's not my decision to make or halt. Wish it were though. I'd make certain every current conference member understood our position.

If that's the case, he should be upset with them.

RRraaaaaa, nope. Not upset one iota (serious PUN intended here). Just calling wrong wrong as I was taught to. :)

What should happen next? PV fly a flag over it's campus w/ a big "G" on it like Southern's about to do? :emlaugh:
