Trent Dilfer inherited an ascending UAB program, but it's taken him less than two years to crater it

It took one play for UAB's defense to throw in the towel against Army.

The Blazers lined up offsides, and then watched Black Knights quarterback Bryson Daily blow by them for a 29-yard touchdown. After that first defensive play for the Blazers in a disastrous 44-10 loss, CBS Sports Network sideline reporter Tina Cervasio took stock of the situation.

"Right as Army scored the touchdown, I looked at the UAB sidelines," Cervasio said. "A lot of downtrodden faces. They just looked sad."

With the state of the program under Trent Dilfer, who can blame them?

Two years ago, this was one of the truly ascendent programs in the Group of Five. UAB put together six straight winning seasons under coach Bill Clark and rode the wave from Conference USA to the AAC. The Blazers captured two conference championships, won three straight division titles and opened the brand new Protective Stadium.

That's the UAB that many of these players committed to represent. Instead, the Blazers are perhaps the biggest disappointments in college football.

Trent Dilfer came with success in high school. That could CHERRY PICK KIDS.

While I can't stand Deion as a human being-he didn't have all that. He was starting from ground zero. Had it not been for his desire to RUSH-he probably would still be there with a successful team right now or at a bigger college than Colorado.

So hiring just a name doesn't work? Shocking

It depends on who you hire and who you bring in as recruits.

It does not always work to go after NAMES because you looking for attention. That is not limited to just players.

How many big named or long careered folks got coaching gigs and were TRASH or failures?

How many NBA guys have bombed in college? Guys with skins on the wall like Terry Porter? Ewing? Stackhouse? Mark Price? Damon Stodamire?
While guys like Tony Bennett, Dan Majerle and Steve Alford have won.

Magic Johnson as NBA coach.

Trent is learning the lesson normally BLACK men learn when they take certain jobs in certain states. Not everyone wants to play for you or in some case don't want you there.

Those resumes don't mean bleep to those kids or parents or some donors.

Now put Trent on say Cookman or even Valley-those teams are not going into a game facing each other winless.

Because the attitudes of the players will be different. Because those kids will be more open to listening to him. Same with some of these other guys that played that can't get hired by certain schools.

I totally agree. If I said what I am really thinking, I probably would get a lot of push back.

UAB coaches used to always camp out in the state of Florida bringing talented players back to play...I don't know if Dilfer does that...they need to see if they can bring Clark back to coach..
