Torie Bowie

I’m about to have my sixth. It pains me to find out she died alone at home. Sad.

Black women are at least 2.5 times more likely to die during childbirth than white women.

Tori died.
Serena damn near died.

Those two are/were world-class athletes with some level of access to top-notch healthcare.

Imagine Black women without the access.

Was she trying to have the baby at home with a midwife?

As someone with a wife who is currently 8.5 months pregnant, I see how pregnant people, especially black women, aren't handled with a lot of humanity. And it's frustrating. And scary. I pray all the time the birth goes well with no complications, man.
One of our former students at the school I teach at died during childbirth. my white coworker couldn't understand it and I had to breakdown the fact that black women die at much higher rates from pregnancy.

Just sad. Childbirth is risky business to begin with.

But for Black women, childbirth becomes a minefield of potentially fatal issues.
I was discussing this situation with my sister who is a retired nurse. The stories she told me. SMH. She also says that she does not understand why things like this happen so often now days with the technology that is out there. But, maybe, Torie didn't have insurance. It is just a sad situation.

This is a REASON for universal healthcare if there ever was one.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is a United States Congressional Act passed as part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) of 1986. It is commonly referred to as a federal “anti-dumping law” that prevents hospitals from denying or limiting treatment to patients based on their insurance status or ability to pay and transfer them to other facilities. Since the law was passed, it has had other far-reaching influences on various aspects of the healthcare system, including emergency medical services (EMS)

If we didn't get that shit during COVID, we ain't getting it.
We ain’t getting that.

And after Sandy Hook, there won’t be gun control.

I tell my wife the problem with America is that folks don’t have the conviction and will to make things better. Oh, the tools and money and know-how are there. The conviction and will to do right… naaaaaaaaah

Unfortunately it seems like both of you are right especially with gun control

Unfortunately the best ways to force the type of change necessary to get those basic things are:

Get people in DC who will fight for those things (not likely with the oligarchs financing the UniParty) or Jan. 6 to force it
