Mark time mark! These marching band programs from around the country are known for their impressive shows, marching technique, and musicianship. You may have seen them in parades, during half-time shows, or performing with some big-name stars. Many of these bands have opportunities for students who aren't music majors, so even if you're studying chemistry, engineering, or fine art, you are welcome to audition for these great bands. Most importantly, all the bands listed here balance band practice with studying--your education always comes first.

Hmmmm...uh oh. Takes a look. Finta be some shots fired....& runs out of this thread!!!

Jag I must say hats off to you. I don't agree with 90% of what you normally say but on the post you just made dude I applaud you. Now I ain't crazy about the fact that it took a Jag to finally say the truth. It's time both SU and JSU stop this foolish pride thing and admit that both are the best there is when it comes to HBCU bands and when it come to being recognized by observers from outside the SWAC and HBCU. Heck if Russa and the U.S. Can agree that ISIS is full of shat so can we agree on the greatness of both bands. I know to some it's just smack but to 98% it kills them when one is ranked over the other. The fact is both programs have individualized characteristics about their program that appeal to their loyal fan base and obviously to the media and others who write these articles. Those characteristics rang from marching style, show design, and musical arrangements. Neither of the mentioned characteristics are slaw but personal choice by non music fans and learned likes and dislikes to musicians through years of training. Notice I said musicians and not band members there a difference if you are a true musician.

As far as these polls go heck even Ali lost his title every once and a while but yet he is still regarded as the greatest of all. So with that being said its ok to refer to or view your band as the greatest of all. But what's not ok is having too much pride to do what jag just did. That's why I said foolish pride. I too in the past have displayed some form of this pride. But after reading jag I had to be real with myself. Because if he can do it I can. Now to you cats who wil balk at my post with that pride thing still controlling you I ask you this. Since you love your program so much what have you done for your program after you left or while your currently in the program? Are you or were you a sectionleader, do you pay your band alumni dues, do you volunteer to help. If not then your opinion mean about as much to me as a KKKs opinion on the purpose of the NAACP. Big ups Jag!!!

Now some shade. To the other SWAC bands if you want in on this show me more than three polls. But Alcorn you getting there. GSU you did better. PB you are always over looked because I feel you aren't as a University as well known.

I am me! I have never hated JSU or The Boom. Heck I lived in Dallas for 4 years and have always supported JSU Alumni events just as they have supported SU Alumni events. It's always been love-hate. Now some people on this board appear to be extremely "passionate" or just flat out HATE SU or perhaps the just the BD. Either way I'm good. I stand by my original message by simply saying congrats to both bands. Honestly, I can't think of another SWAC band that has been CONSISTENTLY good for DECADES other than SU or JSU.

If you read correctly first off I gave you props also and secondly that which you are talking about was not directed at you or the original jag.

My response was not directed towards you or anyone directly and I agree with your thoughts. I was speaking in general. Thanks for the props.

Yall funny, because a poll was done not to long ago,, and SU was number 1 and some of these same people were hollering to the mtns IT'S PEOPLE OPINIONS. . SO I WILL SAY IT, IT'S PEOPLE OPINION..

But I will cosign, what you guys have said. The only constant bands are SU, JSU in the SWAC. ... and until the others step up.. and become CONSTANT, I really don't see nothing changing, idk about JSU.. but, Haymer I think has the attitude of being unbothered by the competition in the SWAC HELL prob all HBCUS bands.. I remember the rivalry between FOSTER AND DOC, They brought the good out of eachother, I wish we get back to that, because it was a time that most SWAC bands were no cake walk.. hell even MVSU was something back in the day..

Not only him but majority of SU band members and fans

Like someone stated, it's becoming boring to these dudes and they only battle past editions of SU bands

*shruggs*

Congrats though

That's always been the case Big Head. Even from my time. SU band alums are the most critical of any Jukebox version that comes out. We only compete with previous editions. When I marched. I got there after the Legendary 83 band tore folks up all year. So in Fall 84. All we heard is we were not as good as Fall 83 band. Even though 84 was a good year for the Juke. And the 70s cats were on other stuff because of all the musicians like Branford Marsalis and Cameo's Charlie Singleton had marched in those versions. So we heard about those versions. I was privileged to have marched in what is considered a legendary Jukebox year in 85 and then 86 was slightly below the 85 year. My crab class SR year in 87 was probably our weakest band in our opinion but to outsiders, we got much love and adulation. So the competition between Juke versions is way more debated and talked about than any other band. In our Facebook private group, it goes down on what years were the best or if the new school is on old school levels. This is tame on this board. LOL. But only a Juke would understand. Folks think we are brainwashed. But Doc Greggs taught us that way. He always said you aint competing with other bands. You are competing with past versions of THIS band. LOL.
