In 1910, First Black heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson successfully defended his heavyweight championship by knocking out Jim "The Great White Hope" Jeffries, who had come out of retirement "to win back the title for the White race...
 
I have read about and scene footage of that fight many times. Did you know that when they were "filming" that fight, at the point when Johnson was through playing with Jeffries (historians talk about how he toyed with Jeffries and laughed at him during th match) and finally got ready to KO him, somebody snatched the recorder from whoever had it. They didn't want the world to see a brotha finishing off the original "Great White Hope".

They really didn't like Johnson because, not only was he a brotha with the world heavyweight title, he was also married to a white woman.

P.S. James Earl Jones played Jack Johnson in movie. I forget the title.

The movie is the Great White Hope. J Earl was a young man back then. But the movie is excellent!
 
July 5, 1947, Larry Dobie broke the MLB color barrier in the American League (Cleveland Indians). His first plate apperance was rather uneventful, striking out on a 2-2 pitch.
